Wallace & Gromit Get The Telltale Treatment
Posted by Mike Fahey at 7:40 AM on July 25, 2008
Everyone's favourite claymation man and dog combo is getting the episodic adventure game treatment courtesy of Telltale Games. The company has just announced Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures, an adventure series in the same vein as Sam and Max, ultilising graphics that simulate the claymation look and feel of the beloved series.
"We're certainly going for the clay look with this," Telltale Games CEO Dan Connors told The Associated Press. "Clay presents a challenge if you really get into the detail of it. For example, adding fingerprints in a medium where there aren't any is one of the discussions of how far we should go with the game's detail."
Wallace & Gromit have appeared in their own standalone games in the past, but Connors explains that the episodic nature of the upcoming game will capture the feel of a W&G short far better than a platformer starring the characters ever could, sentiments Strong Bad creators Mike and Matt Chapman echoed regarding their upcoming Telltale game series.

They should make it in real claymation. Anyone ever play that game The Neverhood? It was done really well.

Telltale are short of becoming what Lucas Arts was for adventure gaming in the early 90ies. I love it.
I'd trust them to come up with their original characters as well, but as long as they keep licensing AWESOME titles and make them work, it's fine to me.
Great!

Didn't either! That's a new direction for Nintendo. Oh wait...

Ooh. I was leery about Sam and Max because it took them a while to release Bone episodes, so hopefully they can keeps a pace with Wallace and Gromit. Telltale is really showing what episodic gaming can be

Sam, Max, Strong Bad, Wallace, Gromit, Bone... Telltale needs to make a deal with Capcom and put out the most awesome "Capcom Vs." fighting game in history.

Don't mistake me for a hater, but... "clay presents a challenge"? Are you kidding me? Anyone with any experience in 3D modeling should have a good laugh at that statement.
You know what we call 3D renders of models that have the default material applied to them? Clay renders. Because it looks like clay. By default.

@Toasticus: Well, does that apply once you export and put it in a game engine that's handling the lighting?
I'm truly ignorant on this subject. I'm just wondering if it would be different once exported from whatever program you actually 3D model in...

@thezman: While it's true that easy effects for pre-rendered 3D can become very difficult in game engines, clay materials don't pose any problems there. They really don't. Baking out a soft ambient occlusion map and adding random, subtle bumps to the normalmap should be totally sufficient. Maybe some really soft rimshading if they want to get fancy. And here's the kicker: once you get one clay material ready to go, all you have to do is change the base color for all your other clay needs.
When 3D artists talk about things that are challenging for real-time game graphics, the most common subjects are hair, water, reflections, and soft shadows from lights that move around. Making clay look like clay is pretty much the simplest 3D thing you could ever be expected to do, other than making concrete look like concrete.

@Toasticus: If it's so easy to do why do Nick Park and Co do all their films with actual clay/stuff like clay?
I'd have thought they'd just stick to computers if it was so easy to render...surely it can't just be for the 'authentic experience'?
(By the way, I have no knowledge on the topic...not that you wouldn't have gathered that by now).

Toasticus

@Krondonian: Probably for authenticity, mostly. I was curious myself so I tried looking up any articles on his reasoning, and found this snippet from an interview:
"I wanted to keep the hand-made quality that it's always had."
So that's one factor. I'm guessing that another factor is that a switch from real clay to CGI would turn him from expert to novice, preventing him from getting really hands-on with how he wants specific shots to be set up. The last factor is just getting that stop-motion animation quality, which can be accomplished by disabling the automatic tweening that all 3D animation programs apply.
Toasticus
Krondonian
Posted 11:41 AM 25/7/08
@Toasticus: Yeah, he just really seems to prefer the 'old-school' qualities of the hand done animation.
Thanks for the link, great interview even if a bit dated now.
