Whatcha Listening To? Like, Right Now?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:40 PM on July 7, 2008
To: Crecente
From: Bashcraft
Man, it's Monday! And a pretty quiet Monday, post holiday. Went to my kid's soccer practice, where another little kid crapped in his pants and had to be taken off the field by the coach. Ah, yes, youth.
Been listening to a lot of Bowie recently, a lot -- well, up to Scary Monsters, after which he seemed to lose the plot for a while (warm fuzzy Labyrinth soundtrack memories aside). Heroes just might be in my top five albums of all time...
I always seem to go in phases where I begin listening to one artist or genre, listen to that to death and then move on..........
What's on your playlist? Gonna need some Tunes to listen to on the plane.

At work I usually listen to classical music (except on Friday's when I rock out hard. And strong). Right now I'm listening to the soundtrack from A Clockwork Orange which I highly suggest for anyone to have in their music collection. A smudge of Beethoven's 9th and a bit of the ol' ultra violence never hurt anyone. Except for those that are on the receiving end of said violence.

Here's what I've been digging recently:
Daughters - Hell Songs
Noisy, amazing.
Athletic Automaton - A Journey Through Roman's Empire
Really, really trippy noise rock out of Providence.
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Straight outta' the 60s, produced by Frank Zappa of the Mothers of Invention. You have to experience it at least once.
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Although I enjoy Pink Floyd's later stuff, Pink Floyd will never really be Pink Floyd to me without Syd Barrett.
Question Mark and the Mysterians - 96 Tears
Good, popular garage rock from a forgotten era.
Cool Kids - Bake Sale
I love these guys' silly rhymes. Rapping about playing Street Fighter on your Sega? You've hooked me.
I'm Not There Soundtrack - features some wicked Dylan covers by people like Jim James, Tom Verlaine, Karen O, Antony and the Johnsons, Richie Havens, and many, many more.
Russian Circles - Station
Instrumental rock/metal. This might actually be the most soothing for a plane ride.

@nautnaut: I love Battle Of Mice, my favorite record of 2006, I'm so waiting for the Jesu/Battle Of Mice split.
Zodiak is great but I don't like it as much as I like Rosetta and Balboa independently. Don't know if you head the Pyramids record (The singer from Mare, more craziness, even more than Mare) or The (Fallen) Black Deer record (Josh Graham from Red Sparrowes/Battle Of Mice, good stuff, sorta better than his other project released this year A Storm Of Lights).
Today I woke up in the mood to listen to Alkaline Trio... and been doing so pretty much all day (Everything up to Crimson basically), how I haven't cut my wrists is a mystery hehehehehe.

I haven't actually given the Pyramids record a thorough listen to, but from what I remember, it was quite interesting and I definitely dug it...will give it a proper listen to soon. Haven't heard that other record...I'll look for it though. I did like A Storm of Lights ok. Have you heard the new North record? or new Mouth of the Architect? Really great albums...I especially love the new North because of the added vocals. Oh and can't forget Torche's Meanderthal...can't wait to see them soon with Boris. Perth Express are awesome too if you haven't heard. Sounds like Converge+Mastodon+and others...
And I also approve of Alkaline Trio. Good stuff.
