Wii Getting Animal Crossing AND Punch-Out?
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on July 12, 2008
The fine folks over at N-Europe have gotten their hands on the latest issue of British Nintendo magazine NGamer, which contains some tasty information about the big N's E3 presence. Not only does it contain yet another mention of the all-but-confirmed Animal Crossing for the Wii, it also suggests that the Punch-Out series will be making its triumphant return. Punch-Out Wii supposedly will use the Wii Balance Board for ducking and weaving, while maintaining punching controls similar to Wii Sports Boxing and Rhythm Boxing from Wii Fit. The mag also explained that according to their sources, Animal Crossing Wii has been finished for some time, and while it isn't an MMO as previously rumoured it does utilise Wi-Fi sharing.
While AC Wii is almost a certainty, Punch-Out is still firmly planted in rumour-land. Even though it sounds perfect, I wouldn't get my hopes up too high before Nintendo's E3 press conference. Now if only they could find away to combine Animal Crossing and Punch-Out...

As much as I love all things Punch-Out!!, Nintendo will find a way to make it not fun on the Wii. Wii Sports Boxing was terrible, and the balance board idea sounds like a hinderance waiting to happen.

Meh. The generation has REALLY pushed me away from 98% of Nintendo products.
I had my fill of boxing in Fight Night many years ago.
More Animal Crossing? Meh. I dropped 20 hours into Viva last year. I think that was enough.
I want to play stuff like Fallout 3 and Fable 2 and Too Human this year. My tastes are just not where Nintendo is, any longer.

MT's Punch-Out was great, Super Punch-Out was even better, and I'm sure they can make the Wii version great as well, BUT...
If they insist on the Balance Board/Wii Sports Boxing controls, please support a regular controller scheme (Wiimote + Nunchuk, Classic Controller, GC Controller.) Wii Boxing is the most physically demanding game I've played on the Wii and I think most of us play to relax and have fun, not to swing our arms around until they go numb.

Ever notice that the punching bag in Wii Fit moves very similarly to King Hippo, both when punching and blocking?

Wow, I don't know why but people seem to love giving Nintendo their hard earned money for nothing. SO now I'll have to buy Wii fit for the board.
How long before I have to buy mock up stable with little plastic animals that are represented by cutesy characters on screen.
I don't get it. My Wii gathers dust because it doesn't have any new, exciting content for me. It's just OoT #5, Mario 64 #12, Super Smash Brothers #20, Mario Kart 16.
I don't like having to buy 15 different controllers either. It blows my mind that people whine about 360/PS3 games being $65 but they will pay outrageous prices for something they already own, now made with white plastic and a Nintendo badge.

@Heliophage: As far as I know you can't even buy the balance board on its own yet - or can you?
Hopefully they at least start selling it separately (because then I can presumably get a UK balance board and not have to get it shipped from the US). I suppose I could already buy a UK Wii Fit, which then wouldn't work due to region restriction, just to get the board, but buying software that doesn't work seems like an irritating process...

@BoringJob: Wrong. Wrong. And Wrong. But lets break it down.
You can play Kart Wii with a wavebird. but you don't get all the abilities you would with a Wiimote combo of some sort.
Exhibit A is flat out wrong. The only thing "missing" would be the tricks. Instead of being mapped to the tilt functionality, they're assigned to the D-Pad.
Why? Because they'd prefer you buy another piece of (overpriced) hardware.
A Wii Wheel was included with the purchase of Mario Kart Wii. At no additional cost. The wheel is completely optional (I have friends who use the standard Wheel + Nunchuk and have no problem racing with it. Including full functionality.
And if you insist on using last-gen equipement on your next-gen console, you can't expect a full experience. I suppose you're also incredibly pissed that MS and Sony both expect you to buy all new controllers for your PS3 and 360, since your controllers from the PS2 and XBox aren't compatible.
it's about Nintendo requiring us to buy 5 different controllers for 5 different games to get all the features in the game.
And your entire tirade is based entirely on one sentence in a blog article that is completely rumored.
Overreaction much?

@BoringJob: Blah blah blah...cry cry cry.
WiiPlay was packed in with a remote, which made it essentially a new remote with a mini-game collection for like 10 bucks (back when Remotes were hard to get)
WiiFit is essentially a pack in to the balance board, which allows them to pump up the price a bit and provide early adopters a mini-game collection to give them a feel for how it works.
Much like how the Wii will likely never be sold without WiiSports, the balance board will likely never be sold without WiiFit. If only to guarantee that anybody who buys it at least has ONE game.
Also, I doubt that they'll FORCE a balance board control scheme. It'll likely be a scheme more similiar to WiiSports Boxing, but fleshed out to provide better control over movement.
Because that already allows to duck and dodge somewhat simply by tilting the controller + nunchuk. I wouldn't be surpriesd if the board is completely optional...used to provide a more immersive feel to those who wish to use it.

@nastysquared: @Huckleberry: It's not just about all new IPs. It's about evolving them too. Nobody would argue that Cod4 and MGS4 didn't evolve their gameplay in major ways.
Mario Galaxy having better gameplay? You obviously haven't played these titles.
And neither of you have an answer yet for Nintendo's requiring new hardware to get the fullest experience out of the game.
Exhibit a:You can play Kart Wii with a wavebird. but you don't get all the abilities you would with a Wiimote combo of some sort. Why? Because they'd prefer you buy another piece of (overpriced) hardware. And 4 of them, for your 3 friends when they come over.
Even if they pack it in, they are gonna charge more.
The most innovative thing about Galaxy was that it was a prettier version of Mario 64.
This thread isn't just about Punch out rehash, it's about Nintendo requiring us to buy 5 different controllers for 5 different games to get all the features in the game. otherwise it's a gimped experience.

@BoringJob: I've played those games, and enjoyed them. But I have no problem saying that a game like MGS4 evolved the Metal Gear gameplay only as much as Mario Galaxy evolved the Mario gameplay.
Saying that the most innovative thing about Galaxy is that it's a "prettier" Mario 64 combined with your factually incorrect statements about "requiring" new hardware (in the Mario Kart Wii example, for instance) proves that you don't know what you're talking about. Again, take your own advice and troll elsewhere where people won't call you on your (apparently massive) ignorance.

Your argument has no footing. Nintendo didn't have to offer last-gen control schemes at all for ANY Wii game. The fact they even tried to make last-gen hardware work with current-gen software speaks volumes to their attempts to make things work best they can.

So sure, it's not "required". But how will you be able to have fun when you can't lean and your buddy can because he could afford to buy the board?

If you actually know how to play boxing in Wii Sports, you would know that you're not supposed to quickly flail your arms around wildly and mindlessly in the air. Sure that does work and can be a rather effective method to winning, but since the motion controls are not 100% accurate, it will usually result in the game determining most of the motion gestures as unresponsive and you'll just end up being tired in less than three minutes.
I've had much more success by simply taking my time to play the game as a slower pace to attack, dodge and block which allows the game a better chance to correctly interpret my motion gestures and I can last longer than the person who does the wild waggle method.
I don't own Wii Fit, but a new Punch Out game sounds like fun so I hope Nintendo allows Wii Fit as an optional control scheme. I played my sister's boyfriend's Super Punch Out about three months ago and I got my ass kicked pretty quickly since I suck at it.
I've never played an Animal Crossing game since the genre isn't really my cup of tea but I won't be quick to pass on it just yet.

It's not like they're releasing a ton of games soon and have any reason to hold onto it.
As far as Punch Out... so long as they tweak some of the controls a bit so it can be a bit more fast-paced, and I'll be fine with it. My only problem with the Sports Boxing was how the nunchuk seemed to act a little less sensitive and reacted slower to movements... so if I can hook up a second remote as the left fist... then awesome.

Oh how I miss those days when i'd reset the nes over and over again just so I could break Glass Joe one more time.

@Foxstar Sixtail: I don't know and that's part of the problem. If they aren't going in an MMO kind of direction, then I'm not sure what else they could do. Obviously I'd like to see more holidays. I'd like to be able to boot out those residents that I don't like. I remember that in the GC version it was always the last person that came to town that would leave. I'd like the option to choose who stays and who goes, kind of like AC: Gated Community.
I'd also like to be able to build up better relationships with the residents, beyond just doing odd chores and giving gifts. I think someone mentioned in another AC post that they'd like to be able to fish with some of the animals and I think that would be kind of neat. Beyond that though, I don't really know.
@Ampillion = That Man.: You're probably right. I guess what bothers me is that the article says the game has been finished for awhile. It's not so much waiting for the release that bothers me as much as they've got the game there and they aren't doing anything more with it.

Punch-Out Wii = DO WANT.
But ONLY if it keeps the difficulty and does not mainstream pussy out on us.

I didn't say I NEVER played it. I said I don't play it. Understand the difference?
So basically, the best answer you guys came up with is "You haven't played it", "Galaxy is great because it's the same Mario game we've playing for 10 years" and You guys think that I should move on because I dared to call out Nintendo?
Wow, you guys totally showed me. Have fun playing the exact same games forever. I guess the Wii is your ideal console then and Nintendo doesn't ever have to freshen up it's properties. lol

@BoringJob:
But your comparing one company vs. the sum of several companies. That's quite unfair. It's like those people who would argue that the Wii market share isn't big because it's not as big as 360 AND PS3. And when it matches that it's "AND PC." And we all know how lackluster third-party support is on the Wii.
