WipEout HD Has 'A Specific Technical Problem'
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on July 18, 2008
One of the best PS3 games we've laid our hands on over the past 12 months has been the PSN version of classic PlayStation racer WipEout. It was playable all the way back at TGS, and has been playable at various events since, and yet at E3 this year, it was nowhere. No mention of it, no mention of a release date. So what gives? Looks as if while most of the game simply sings, some of it doesn't, with the game plagued by a "really, really tricky technical problem" that nobody at Sony has been able to fix. As a result, they're hoping the game will be out by Christmas, but just can't guarantee it. Bummer.
WipEout HD delayed due to technical issue [Eurogamer]

What about the size of Wipeout HD itself? For you unfortunate souls who get hit from your ISP by the byte - or have capped accounts - how are you supposed to download this PSN game for less than 2.71 souls?
That could be an issue, that is very technical - because technically you could be getting *@ed by your ISP if you get it.
God I want to play this game already. I've been waiting for a new Wip3Out since Fusion.
Wipeout XL (aka 2097) is by far the best one. Pure would be great if it was on a "real TV".

hope they can get a fix for it soon.

The problem is that the method for turning BC off in new systems is they give the system a list of games it's not allowed to play. Unfortunately, it keeps thinking this is actually the original game.....or, it just causes PS3's to implode upon itself. This wouldn't be an issue, if it wasn't for for the blackhole it causes.

Ooo another person with inside secrets. Nice! If it really is the failing of epilepsy tests, I'm willing to let that slide. I want me some Wipeout HD goodness NOW. I'll take the occasional seizure for that. Sony if you're listening, bribe whoever is in charge of getting passing grades for those tests.
Fun Fact: If a person with epilepsy is having a seizure, a game that induces epileptic seizures will reverse it. It's like they cancel each other out!

To this day, Wipeout remains my favourite racing game ever. It's the only Playstation exclusive that really, really makes me insanely jealous of the other side. Has been ever since the first game. I hope they never release it, 'cause that way I won't be obligated to fork out for a PS3. :P

They just need to tighten up the graphics on level 3. They're doing it as fast as they can because they have lots of other video games to make!

@LittleBigPlaneteer: Odd, I had always thought the 4th dimension was one of tiny, tiny donuts.
<Homer dream>
Anyway, I can't see it as being anything trophy, SIXAXIS related; the rumbling stuff has been pretty standard for a while, and how hard is it really to had a few trophies? 1080p/60FPS maybe, but reports have been saying that they've achieved that for months already in all the builds.
So I'm going with - funky netcode!

A programmer myself, sometimes there are just bugs that completely baffle you. I've heard of bugs that have taken entire teams 72 hours of dedicated searching to find (we're talking 20-30 people doing nothing but look for this one bug). In this one instance, eventually it was found within the way the compiler compiled certain C commands to assembly. Not exactly easy to find.
I'm sure they would be incredibly embarrassed to admit if this was the case. A "really, really tricky technical problem" sounds just like that to me.

Quick summary of potential issues:
-Online support
-Trophy support
-1080P/60FPS issues
-Sixaxis/Rumble
-Epileptic seizures
-Opens up whole to 4th dimension (it's filled with pink ponies)
-The game RROD's
-A warning screen appears everytime you stat the game saying the game isn't compatible with the PS3 because Microsoft bought the rights to it with a big fucking blank check, motherfucker I hate when I do rants like this!
-It prints money (not exactly a "problem")

I think the technical problem was that they couldn't get the game to look like the speed factor was as huge as they wanted it to be. Sure, it might be blindingly fast, but they want MOAR.
Also, has anyone been noticing the tricky, technical issue that Kotaku's been having lately? I've had it a few times pop up where I've had multiple comment boxes (y'know, the thing you type these here word deals in.) pop up at the bottom of the page. I had a click earlier that was literally spawning more of them at the bottom of the page.

You're all wrong on this one, actually.
I heard from a friend of a friend who knows some people who kills people that like to rob people of information.
Apparently they're fixing this bug in Wipeout that made EA approve DICE for greenlighting Mirror's Edge.
It's not a 4th dimensional warp thing they're trying to fix.
It leads to the 5th dimension. At the speed of 88mph.

Also, I'm disappointed to hear about this game's release date. It has to be something else besides a technical problem, something like what you said. It's also possible it might not be meeting its full goal of 60 frames a second on 1080p on some courses.

Anything is possible, though I think Sony would rather drop the resolution to 720p instead of indefinitely delaying the product. That and I refuse to believe they have so many asshats over there working that cannot figure out how to optimize performance. Plus, if it was indeed a performance issue I think all the people who've played it in the past year might have mentioned it.
Either way I'm really looking forward to Wipeout HD and was very surprised to not see (or read) about it at E3 this year.

Maybe this game pushes the CELL processor to new uncharted levels and it starts to produce Stranglet particles ala the CERN super collider that create small black holes inside the PS3 that will ripe apart the fabric of space time and make the universe cease to exit. Or, it could give people lethal epileptic attacks. You never know.
