hmm looks like a direct port, did anyone else notice that they only showed one screen. For a game which is meant to be updated to take advantage of the two screens it didn't show anything, this leads me to suspect they were intentionally showing the snes game for nostalgia factor and we can still be pleasantly surprised.

Most of you guys complaining that this is a direct port are faggots.
This is exactly what is needed, a direct, official port of the game on a portable system.
This game doesn't NEED a remake, it was perfect the first time through. Not only that, it has extra stuff, which in my opinion just makes the next time around that much sweeter.
I swear to god, your retards with your "updated THREE DEE graphics" are really pissing me off. Classics that are perfect have no need to be remade, and very, very far an in between. Chrono Trigger is one of those games that needs no changes.
In fact, changing things would probably make the game worse. I am not a fan of Chrono Cross for the very reason that its in three dimensions.
If this is a straight port, I'm just going to pass it. Ports don't get much love for me. I don't believe it needs such a drastic change like the FF3 remake. The little features added to DQ3 for the Gameboy port made me love the game all over again.
Nah. I'm torn between 'hooray it's not changing too much that means they can't screw it up' and 'are they seriously charging us full price for a direct port'.
I think I just want this to be really, really AWESOME - but can't work out in which direction I want it to go. I want to be wowed, the way I was when I first played the game, and I'm not sure a direct port will quite do that.
Screwed...oh man, screwed. After years of waiting, they killed the fan remake and taunted fans with rehases. And here we go again. They are going to charge us $30 to play the ROM of Chrono Trigger.
Screw Square...in the ass.

I agree with the people saying more could have been done. Yes CT is as close to perfection you can come with a traditional RPG, but really... from the trailer someone could have just loaded a snes rom up and no one would be able to tell.

I'm slightly disappointed. It's not even a remake... More like a port. I was hoping the same remake as FF3/5, but I guess it's not happening. I'll stick with my SNES/PS1 copy, thanks.
Its a fantastic game, problem is if you are old enough to have played it when it came out you already played the crap out of it. It has tons of endings, its true ive seen'em. You have to play it over and over again to see them. I dont want to play it again... I want Chrono Trigger 3.

Another Square enix remake, what a surprise. Why dont they spend their resources making something that's "new" and has a different style of play than stupid spinoffs, remakes, or cookie-cutter formula games.
Here's a rough translation. You really don't miss much without it though.
13 years have passed...
"Time" now starts to move once again.
From the forgotten past...
To the distant future...
To the farthest reaches of time...
The curtain will soon rise on
a grand adventure to span the ages
and save the world.

See, to me, that's more the kind of trailer that you would release the FIRST time that a game comes out... But what do I know? I'll likely buy the game even if it's just a 1 to 1 port, portable Chrono Trigger is worth it to me.
Personally, I'm kind glad they didn't remake it in 3d. Chrono Trigger was almost perfect when it was released on the SNES. Today's gamers just have the mindset of "Cutting edge 3d or it's junk" which is a bs assumption because if all you care about is game graphics, you're missing everything of what games are about.
It's sort of my same argument about a FF7 remake. What would it be? Same game, prettier graphics, better translation. That's it. Is that really worth the millions in development and the $60 price tag it would have when you can plunk down, apparently $30-$60 bucks on ebay (I thought it was less, lol) for the original and get the same experience? It's not in my opinion.
Although, after saying that, I feel like an old man sitting on a porch. Gaming's gone so far in the past 20 years that being around when the NES was young makes me feel like a dinosaur.

You know, I feel slightly cheated by this. PAL territories never got to play the original, so you think I'd be interested, if not excited. But given that it is practically a SNES port with a few throwaway features, I'm now just feeling pissed they didn't just slap it on the Virtual Console. Guess there's more money to be made with a full price DS game, eh?
If they force me to use the stylus to play im not getting this.

Over the years, I become less and less of the Gamer I once was. I can't play games the same as I once could years and years ago, and nothing since the games of my childhood have held my attention the same. Everything after the Playstation Era is really just a mesh of the same stuff, but when I think back to SNES, Genesis, and so forth, I can remember hundreds of titles that I loved to play. This is one of them.
When I saw this trailer earlier today, I got the biggest rush of nostalgia that I haven't felt in years. I am so glad that they are finally releasing this on a platform that everyone today can easily get a hold of outside of hard to come by SNES carts of the game or horrible load times of the PS1 port. Everyone can get a slice of one of the greater games of the last decade. I'm really happy about this. Who cares if it just a straight port with little to no new content? I know that half of you out there that are complaining about it will still buy it and play it all the same, complaining all the way. Beans to you, good gentlemen. You know this is what a lot of people want. Let us enjoy it.
When they said a new Chrono Trigger for DS, I figured there would be something new about it
I played this game years ago, and still have it, but its not worth it to re-buy the exact same thing from my SNES. I draw the line at Super Mario 64 DS
It's a great game. And I'm glad it's just the original being re-released. But I've got to say, that trailer looks like a YouTube video made by a kid with four hours on his hands. Thumbs down on that, S-E. Boo. And also, hiss.
Takes over 30 seconds just to get to fucking old concept sketches and list the characters we already know. And when we finally get to the gameplay and presentation, it's exactly the same as before.
Can you get SNES emulators for the DS? Cause that's the better choice.
@KeroseneClimax:
Well, the slowdown in the PS1 version was mainly because of disc reading, which is quite a bit slower than cartridge data. Unless Square is INCREDIBLY STUPID and ports the PS1 version to the DS, this one will probably run lightning-fast.
gee it should be on wii, well i got the ps1 so don't need it.

It was nice of them to add some stuff... I would've bought it anyway.
I'd hardly call the PS1 port lazy. There's a bunch of cool stuff to go through and the animated scenes.
I would like to own a version without the lag of the PS1 version though as I never owned the SNES version.
I'm curious as to whether or not they'll re-translate it. I'm not sure it needs re-translation but I wouldn't be totally against it (Though I'd leave all the names the way they are...especially Ozzie, Flea and Slash).
Hm, I never finished Chrono Trigger. I don't know why, but I never did, and it's been a very long time since I've even touched it again. I've always regretted that, and seeing as how I bought Final Fantasy Chronicles last week --and currently playing FFIV-- I might finally play this game again.
If they can alleviate the slowdown, then I'll probably be willing to buy this version as well.
They changed the title screen! Square just took a crap on my childhood ;) Ok going to be honest be here, I want something improved. From that trailer I can only guess that the menu is on the touch screen?? I look foward to hearing more about this Bash because I love both CT's (that's Chrono Trigger & Crazy Taxi)
They couldn't freshen up the sprites at all? Maybe make them sharper and the animation more fluid? The music is nostalgic, sure, but I would have liked it if they had done an update from the 16 bit era music they are using.
I hope they at least give a better translation in the english version of the game than the SNES one had. If this is just a total port with a gimmick added for the dual screen and a new dungeon then I'm gonna pass.

@Arsenicberyllium: Honestly, I think his work is always very groady looking. Don't like it at all. So I'm very glad they're sticking with the sprites, because I lub them.
I wonder if they'll add a certain character to that final dungeon? YOU KNOW THE ONE, SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE IN BEFORE BUDGET CUTS.
Looks...entirely unchanged. I have absolutely no problem with this. Chrono Trigger NEEDS no alterations to be perfect. Especially not in the way the DS could provide.
My rage at this situation is entirely gone, replaced with a sort of begrudged support. Now all you young "FF7 is the best RPG ever" people can see how, and why you're so dreadfully wrong. :P
Meh. I'll stick to my PSP SNES emulator thank you very much. And here I was imaginating gorgeous DQ4 3D graphics... Even Golden Sun looked better than this.
@riffleraffle: yeah can't tell any difference. what's the point...oh well sweet game, but if they're gonna make a remake, i hope there's something improved about it.
It looks like a straight port so far. Not that I have a problem with that.

Man, I'm gonna get shit for this, but after a full re-assessment, I will say I'm completely glad that they're sticking with 2d sprites, because the character designs just suck balls.
The game still rocks, but Toriyama's(That is Toriyama, right?) artwork just looks like utter crap.
I mean, I don't mean in general, I like the art in DBZ and Dr. Slump. But, his Crono Trigger designs just look ugly when you can see them fully.
Keep the flaws of the original hidden, let me remember it as a classic.

Well they saved a lot money on making the advertising for this. Most of the video was old promotional material for the SNES version. Because I remember those exact pictures etc in the strategy guide. Though I'm still happy I have something else to waste my time on with my DS.
Ya, I kinda wish they would've taken the remake concept and run with it a little more. Still very excited though, this doesn't excitement as much as it should since I just got done playing the PS remake again last week : /
I would've liked it to get the FFIII/IV treatment, but it looks like an enhanced port. Same graphics and I'm betting on a few additional features like they did with the Final Fantasy GBA ports.
Still on my radar just after I get Tactics A2. I also hope they're still working on Crystal Bearers.
This may very well have just been clips from the SNES version. I'd like to see something that makes it stand out as more than just a lazy port ala PS1's Final Fantasy Chronicles.
Square Enix needs to give players a reason to buy this as opposed to just putting the ROM on an SDCard and playing on the DS from there.
It looks like Chrono Trigger. That's about all you can say. Although, I will say I was surprised by the rush of nostalgia I got when hearing the theme music again.
@Vexorg: Actually, that's not a sneaking suspicion, it's a known fact. I recall a news article from about... a year ago or so (don't really remember) regarding why Square wouldn't be supporting VC (so far they've only released 1 or 2 games on it), and a representative basically said "we're not done milking our franchises yet" (of course, he said it in PR-talk). So yeah, they kinda suck. Oh well. And besides, for all we know, it MIGHT have a whole lot of added content (though it certainly doesn't look to be taking advantage of the DS's features).

I feel a little jipped. After Square showing the amazing 2D stuff they did with Heroes of Mana and The World Ends with You, and the amazing 3D stuff with Final Fantasy 3 and 4, they decided to keep SNES visuals with this game. I mean c'mon! Honestly, GBA games look better than this. I'm no graphics whore or anything, but I could just go back and play the free version on my PSP's SNES emulator. If they expect me to buy this game (for 40$ too), they need to add more than local multiplayer and 1 new dungeon.
Wow... it just looks like a remake. that is so stupid. I don't want a remake of a game I have beaten 20 thousand times. I hate square so much for this.

Not everyone disappointed about the fact that it's a direct port is all OMG 3D GRAPHIX NAU.
Updated sprites, a little extra backstory, that extra dungeon - there's a lot of things that could be improved to bring a great game to compete in the modern industry on it's own rights, rather than on nostalgia for how awesome it was at the time.
I'd personally love upgraded sprites - not 3D, but something more along the lines of the FFTA2 sprites - detailed and very pretty in a way that really matches the capabilities of the platform.
The game was absolutely brilliant, yes. Perfect? Nothing is perfect.
I'm really happy they're keeping it the same style. Chrono Trigger would not have made the transition to 3d easily, and it would've been at the expense of hardcore series' fans.
I am hoping they do add dual-screen support somehow (even if just for cutscenes or something), allow stylus-control, and make the extra dungeon worth it. Even if they don't, though, this'll be a great visit to my favorite game all time.

Surely everyone here who is excited has already played this on the SNES or under emulation. It's an amazing game, but why buy it again on the DS? It's not like RPGs are especially well suited to hand helds - VC would have made a lot more sense, and would probably have been cheaper.

Alright, maybe not three dee graphics, but how about new, hand drawn sprites (and backgrounds)? I would've liked that. I'm still gonna get it (again), though.
I agree that the trailer looks like something a teenage fan would put on YouTube, and if there are any new features added to the DS version, the trailer didn't show it.
If this is really just a port, I'll stick to emulation like everyone else. For once, I *want* new updated content and music and art in a classic RPG!
When Square's trailer for their official game doesn't even look as good as a fan trailer for a fan-made game, I think it's a case of laziness on Square's part.
The sad part is that I love Chrono Trigger more than any other game I've played in my life, but after watching the trailer, I can't see any reason to buy the DS port. I'd rather play my SNES copy.

Sprites are only timeless for people who grew up during the era. Sadly though, if you want to draw in gamers aside from those hardcore fanboys who just want to play the same game again (similar demographic to the one nintendo keeps tapping with zelda rereleases) you need to make the game palatable to modern demand.
I don't mean 3d by the day, which for some reason everyone assumes is the only way to update a game. What I do mean is up-ressing the sprites, or even making entirely new art assets to take advantage of the hardware. To all those who say the game is perfect as is, that's nostalgia eating away at your logic. I honestly doubt that if the creators of CT had today's technology they'd release the game as is.
Perfection implies no need for change, and sadly those assets and their vision was limited by technology, as was the case for many games for the era. For example, I'm still praying S-E release a producer's cut of Secret of Mana with all the dungeons, story, bosses, and extras that were cut do to space limitations when the CD version of the game was scrapped.
Much with the same logic, I cant imagine anyone on the CT team would argue that their game couldn't stand to have higher resolution sprites that could emote and animate better, nor would they argue that more expansive or detailed environments would in anyway make the game worse.
I was a teen when I played CT when it first came out, and I remember being wowed. Having played it again last week I was excited to think of what it would look like with tidied up sprites and backgrounds and higher quality audio. As is I guess I'll have to wait another 10+ years in hope of a real remake. I'll stick to SNES version, no need to pay again for something I already own.

For the uninitiated this is a horrible trailer. What is the gameplay going to be like? This is a game, right? Not just a series of drawings...
I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but I really do think that someone who doesn't know about the game will not want to get it based on this trailer.
@Kyuu: It's not the graphics that bug me. It's the fact that they're barely adding anything new. People who already have this game aren't going to get much out of buying it.
One new dungeon is nice, I guess. But I'd much rather have something meaningful. A new scenario, a new time period, a new playable character. Hell, even new artwork would be fine.
Wi-Fi battles, I can't honestly see being anything special. And the "DS functionality" they've shown so far isn't anything special.

I never really got to play it first time around properly, so the chance to play it on my DS is ace. I dont think they need to change anything really...yes some new features are always nice, but how many of you CT fans would kick off if they added something you didnt like?
As for the 'another port' argument...SE are busy creating new IPs, they just take longer...so you'll have to wait ^_^
I seem to be playing more and more on handhelds, no time for my 360 :(
@Suzaku: Well, almost. Radical Dreamers was a pseudo-sequel to Chrono Trigger... and was the set-up for Chrono Cross. CC is hardly a remake of Radical Dreamers, it just uses the same characters and the game re-iterates certain aspects of RD.
A CC remake would make more sense than a CT remake. Old school, 2D games may look bad, but they don't look nearly as bad old 3D games.
But regardless... I'm not necessarily against Square-Enix "whoring out" a franchise that hasn't seen the light of day for quite a while... or not at all in the case of Europe.
And I'd rather it remain untouched. I'm sure they could do a good job updating... but I doubt it could ever be better and they'd only run the risk of fucking things up.
And it's not like there's deep, physics based gameplay. It's a menu system... there's little touching up that needs to be done that isn't visual/audio based... and honestly, I love the look of the game.
And I would absolutely hate a new "arranged" version of the soundtrack. I have only ever heard 1 "arranged" version of a classic song that WASN'T a Nintendo vehicle where the arranged version was actually as good or better than the original... and that's Triggerheart Exelica's. The arranged music is far better than the original, IMO.
The original was fine. The graphics were great, so I'm relieved in a way to see the original stuff there. I don't see why a remake would be needed - I mean sure, that fan CT project where they were making it in 3D looked nice, but does everything HAVE to be in 3D? Some of those old 2D graphics are really really nice. Think of them as pieces of art. e_e You don't go to a museum and start drawing on a painting because you think it could do with a few more trees (bad analogy).
@Pbombas: Why are they making stupid spin-offs and remakes? I'll tell you why... Gamers have been asking for them. The demand is there. On top of that, Square-Enix isn't in very good financial shape at the moment. Lastly, games like this are relatively easy to slap together and put out without much investment. Combine these three factors and you've got a winning proposition for making quick, easy money. They've got demand for a cheap and easy game to produce at a time when that's exactly what they need to pad their coffers.

They better not remake xxx game or xxx game." Now, it appears they're directly porting Chrono Trigger and they're angry at that as well. Would they prefer 3D chibi graphics? Or perhaps they'd just rather see a remake for their next gen console of choice and that's what it really boils down to. The third thing they seem to love to do is talk about how Squaresoft is rehashing yet another series and taking their money. They might add how they'd rather play this on their SNES. The video game industry is just like any other entertainment industry. If you don't want it, you don't pay for it. Yes, it is your right to complain about them, but at least give them some way to make things right because nothing they've done seems to do that (regardless of whether it's completely redoing an old final fantasy game to bringing Chrono Trigger, yes the game people have been begging them for for years, on the DS.)
They completely left out Magus from their list of characters.....that's dumb.

First thought on the trailer "What the HELL? Did they just rip this from the SNES or what? There's not even a split screen!!" Second thought "Damn it, I have to set-up my SNES again.." Third thought "I just finished Star Ocean 3 went to replay and was yet AGAIN disappointed with no 'New Game +'" Actually I thought that before today, the trailer just wants me to pound in every person who made any RPG since CT was released. I replayed that game so many times I had to unequip all my crap just to lose the first time you fight Lavos!
The three greatest SNES RPGs in order: CT, FF6, SoM. And SoM was my favorite. Every one of them is better than anything that's come out since. Man what a depressing thought. Still, CT with New Game+ on a handheld? So sold, it's not even funny. I have to go to a laundromat every week damn it. Might as well re-live the golden days of the RPG.

I'm pretty excited about this, personally. Since it was the on the SNES, I don't really think it needs to be remade, but whatever. I'll buy it day one, for sure.
The Wifi battles thing is kind of lame... in my opinion. Why would I sit down with someone and battle against them RPG style? Would kids even do this with only 7 playable characters or whatever?
I mean, it was great in Pokemon (when I was 12 <_< ) because there are many different monsters and it fits into the whole theme. But in Chrono Trigger? :S no... no thanks. I'd rather have more extra content.
Am I the ONLY one who noticed "2008 Winter" at the end? What the hell does that mean?

Honestly, it just seems like a direct port. If they're going to bring something back from the grave, they might as well give it a touch-up. Because if they release this for $30+, I'm going to feel ripped off (I know I'm going to get it anyway, hence why I said, "... going to feel ripped off.").
I'm not saying to simply give it a "FF3 or 4" graphically upgrade, but you figure it's been YEARS since the release of Chrono Trigger. Don't we deserve something fresh and new, if not at least upgraded? Chrono Trigger is a classic. Lets either keep it that way or move onto something new.
I was expecting a bigger update not a anniversary re-release. Too bad since I'm sure nothing will be done for the top screen.

This looks like a straight port.... but it still brought back some nostalgia. This was one of the best rpgs for the superfamicom. The special ending plus was so worth it!!! Remember you get a star after you beat the game and if you replay it you can warp straight to the last boss with only 2 characters. Oh, the fond memories. Call me sentimental, assholes.
I hope the inevitable American version is more true to the Japanese original, like this trailer shows it's DS version will. Also, I must resist the urge to say that I'm seeing nothing new, as I would spend hundreds of dollars on this without question. I'm not joking, this game defines my entire existence as a human being, the first 60 dollars I ever forked over for a box containing a game. I need new pants.

Looks like Chrono trigger! Which is the only jrpg i have ever truly loved. Note to self. Buy CTDS when it's out.
I loved Chrono Trigger! Only thing is wished there was a "official enhanced" version for the psp. Otherwise verything is good. I would like to see more new JRPGS from Square for psp that are not remakes, and more JRPGS for PS3. But Seems Square Enix has no real love for PS3 owners :(

@WillSerenity: That's not the point of this discussion. The original is perfect, yes. There's absolutely no reason to remake it with gorgeous 3D visuals.
BUT, if they ARE going to put out a new version 13 years after the original, then they should at least justify it by making it something fresh and exciting. Reselling the old game for a new platform isn't terribly exciting.
Am I the only person who thinks that this belonged on the GBA? It sounds EXACTLY like the Final Fantasy Advance series, what with the 'new dungeon' being the only real worthwhile new feature. And don't try to tell me that the multiplayer will be any good, It'll probably just be like some sort of stupid arena thing.
This is just pure laziness on Square's part. however, if this sells well, we might see a new Chrono game on DS, or Wii, or 360, or something. Just as long as it's better then Chrono Cross.
If they made the game different, people would attack it and say how horrible everything new is, complete with "I won't buy this"!
Where has gaming fans gone wrong? If it's remade people complain and attack it.
If it's the same, they complain because it's the same.
If it's for the fans in an old style it is hated and declared to be "lazy".
If it has colour in it, it's nothing like previous games, as rainbows and green reduces any fun that can be had slaying demons.
If they changed anything in the slightest fighting Zerg in a sequel, it would be hearsay and fire thrown upon it.
Maybe I should make a petition online to get people to be happy for once. Or can that even exist when we talk about games these days?
Why do I say any of this? For I know that for every person saying how horrible this is/they won't buy this, in an alternate universe where Chrono Trigger is getting a Final Fantasy III remake, there is an equal amount of people saying they won't buy it and it's horrible such a thing has happened.
Of course in that universe everyone wears a cowboy hat.
For the record, I will be buying this game even if it is the exact same of the SNES, just with a new dungeon. Mostly because I only have the PS1 version and I can't stand such horrible load times.
Hearing that music brought a tear to my eye. Ahh... the memories.

To the many people who are saying that they have multiple copies of this game already, and it doesn't need a remake: There's quite a few places in the world this was never released, ever - the DS is a region free device, hence, chances are there's hundreds of thousands of people who've heard of this great game, and never had the chance to get it legimately.
Or may have played it millions of times not-so-legitimately, and may or may be squeeing over and over. Totally unlike me. <__<
I'd totally pay the price of a PC/PS3/XBox game for this (~$100 AU, or ~US$96), because I'm a terrible fanboy. :(
That said, this is a pretty dissapointing trailer, with about half of it just being the original concept art, which doesn't really show much about the game.
@dead_red_eyes: Id be surprised if they charge that much for it. DS games retail price are usually determined by the size of the cartridge that is used (at least from my understanding). Thats why some ds games retail for 20, 30, or 40 dollars. Seeing as this is more or less a port of an snes game i doubt they would need to use a cart as large as the one they used on say the FF3 remake. Though if they did charge 40 for it i'd still buy it.
Great news! I only played about 4 hours on an emulator and got stuck somewhere and never went back. But this gives me a chance to get back into this and finally finish it! I don't care if its the same game because... I really just want to have Chrono Trigger:
Wow, you would think after canning the fan-made chrono resurrection, Square would've at least made a half-assed attempt to up the graphics like they did for FF3/FF4. It just saddens me to know that a FREE fan-made project was probably going to be better than the sorry excuse for a remake that Square is doing. Screw you Square, I'll stick with my original Chrono Trigger cartridge.

I personally never played the original, however, so this may very well be a buy for me. Wasn't into RPGs much when I had an SNES, so I never gave it a go.
"Anyone with a Playstation system (most models) can play this game for $15 or less." Who decided everyone has a playstation system?
"Anyone with a computer made in the last decade can play this game free of charge." What about those who are morally restricted (choose not to download it because it is pirating) or do not have the know how?
"Anyone who ever wanted to play Chrono Trigger has had ample opportunity to do so." Not true, many of the newer generation of gamers or others missed out on this gem.
"This port is completely inessential." Nope, and for the reasons I listed above.
@Fwiffo: Well considering the price of complete copies on the SNES I think it will be reasonable to pay full price for this. Although I wouldn't mind a XBLA,VC, PS3 download. While the portability is nice I would prefer to play it on a bigger screen. And again I wonder when Secret of Evermore will arrive...
Anyone remember [www.opcoder.com] Chrono Trigger Resurrection? That remake was something I was truly excited about. It looked amazing....to bad it got cease and desisted.

My Japanese is pretty spotty but I'm pretty sure the first line says "the game you already played 13 years ago!"
I only have the PSX version of this game and the load times ruined it. I'm glad they are putting it on DS so I can take it where ever I want to. I don't understand the fuss about leaving the game's graphics alone. They would only end up doing a crappy job upgrading it and piss everyone. You can't improve on perfection.

This is fine too though. Saves me some cash, which I appreciate.
I was hoping for more, but only barely playing through the game to the point where I got Frog, I'll probably play it, maybe buy a used one. I'm not paying $40 for a game I could otherwise play freely on my emulator.

Chrono Cross was more of a continuation of the events that took place in Radical Dreamers (which took place in another dimension or something...I dunno).
Also, that trailer was rather lackluster. It's like something a fanboy would've made with clips and pictures he found lying around his hard drive.

If they know it is going to sell millions of copies then why not put that motivation into developing a "Current-gen" sequel?
I used to love this company, like worship it, but with games taking 5 years to come out, el-cheapo spinoffs of great games for every portable device imaginable and lame re-releases like this... I am no longer clicking every "Square Enix" article like I did in the past.

SquareEnix definitely needed to port this game. Whether to the VC or whatever.
@Dr.Chocobo: I'm not going to say that the port is unecessary, simply because I want to play it, but I'd disagree with your other statements.
"Anyone with a Playstation system (most models) can play this game for $15 or less." Who decided everyone has a playstation system?
Well, over 100 million people have it, and pretty much any gamer(Other than fanboy retards who wouldn't touch this game anyways) over the age of 10 has had a Playstation Console, be it 1, 2, or 3.
"Anyone with a computer made in the last decade can play this game free of charge." What about those who are morally restricted (choose not to download it because it is pirating) or do not have the know how?
Once again, any gamer who has any interest in this game knows how to find a ROM and Emulator site. It's not exactly a mainstream title, hence the name "Cult Classic".
The moral part may be an issue, but I feel if it's impossible to obtain the game legitimately, go ahead and use the ROM.
"Anyone who ever wanted to play Chrono Trigger has had ample opportunity to do so." Not true, many of the newer generation of gamers or others missed out on this gem.
Actually, it doesn't change the fact that they've had the opportunity to play it, as shown above.

@Aprocalypse: I never said "this remake is unecessary because of piracy". Or spelled unnecessary wrong.
My point was that there are plenty of ways to get it legitimately. If you have a Ps3, it'll play the game regardless of region(at least, as far as I can tell). If you have a Ps2, like every person in Europe, you can get it modded for $20, and get the USA region version for $20. Hell, you could import a PsOne from the USA for $15, and play the game for $35.
My point is that they've had plenty of chances to get the game legit, and if they're complaining about not getting from ROMS due to their "morals" (Which, in this case are rather idiotic), and not being able to buy it, they're simply lying and unwilling to pay up or put any effort in.

@SagatSon: @Arsenicberyllium: Isn't "this remake is unecessary because of piracy" kind of a silly reason not to make a remake? It's basically "currently they get nothing, so they shouldn't make this thing, because instead they'll get the money?".
I've played this thing to bits, illegimately... but this title was NEVER EVER released in the PAL regions. EVER. That's quite a few people, you know?
Sometimes it really makes me wonder why a port is effectively like reprinting a book, but people go crazy over it being a bad thing.
Whatever it is, it's great for everyone in a PAL region:
1) If it's exactly the same, it's a game that we never got, that we're finally getting.
2) If it's very different, we're getting something new and shiny.
3) If it's somewhere in between, well, double win.
Basically, my point is, this actually is something that is good and completely new for around 29 million of the 75 million DS owners. ([vgchartz.com]) In other words, 1/3 of the target market never had a chance to get this game legitimately.

hmm looks like a direct port, did anyone else notice that they only showed one screen.

Well, the slowdown in the PS1 version was mainly because of disc reading, which is quite a bit slower than cartridge data. Unless Square is INCREDIBLY STUPID and ports the PS1 version to the DS, this one will probably run lightning-fast.

Surely everyone here who is excited has already played this on the SNES or under emulation. It's an amazing game, but why buy it again on the DS? It's not like RPGs are especially well suited to hand helds - VC would have made a lot more sense, and would probably have been cheaper.

One new dungeon is nice, I guess. But I'd much rather have something meaningful. A new scenario, a new time period, a new playable character. Hell, even new artwork would be fine.

I don't see why a remake would be needed - I mean sure, that fan CT project where they were making it in 3D looked nice, but does everything HAVE to be in 3D? Some of those old 2D graphics are really really nice. @Pbombas:
Why are they making stupid spin-offs and remakes? I'll tell you why... Gamers have been asking for them. The demand is there. On top of that, Square-Enix isn't in very good financial shape at the moment. Lastly, games like this are relatively easy to slap together and put out without much investment. Combine these three factors and you've got a winning proposition for making quick, easy money. They've got demand for a cheap and easy game to produce at a time when that's exactly what they need to pad their coffers.

@Suzaku: Well, yes, that's what I was getting at. You can't just throw a CT rom on your DS and expect it to work like the person I quoted. The only way it's going to run this game properly is it SS releases it. The person I quoted suggested that he'd rather just plop down the rom and play it that way instead of paying 40 some dollars.

@Tiger-Fever: There's a difference between a fan-created emulator and something produced by the developers. A lot of these ports/remakes you see have built-in hardware emulation rather than being completely reprogrammed and optimized to run on the new hardware.

@thezman: The creator of the series has stated that he didn't like Radical Dreamers and that Chrono Cross was a remake of it as a "proper game". Radical Dreamers was basically just the infiltration of Viper Manor with Guile in your party and a few changes to the plot so that it begins and ends there, and some really random side stories thrown in afterwards.
@blkpaladin: FFV Advance. It was released between FFIV Advance and FFVI Advance, surprisingly.

@riffleraffle: Your suggestion would be all good and well if SNES emulating on the DS was at all stable and even possible. I have been trying to emulate SNES on my DS for almost a year. What you can emulate runs so poorly it is not worth playing. Can you run this game on a PSP? Easily. But this game is not for the PSP, it is for the DS, the DS itself can not run this game any other way.
I don't understand the need to criticize Squaresoft for every move they make. They re-did FFIII and FFIV but they screamed "oh, you chibied the graphics. Now they look so stupid.

They were using the Japanese names and for some reason, they changed the spelling on Marle and Crono. Who knows.
Anyway, I'm still glad they haven't forgotten about Chrono Trigger. I mean, lets look at it this way. They could have done 1 of 3 things.
1. Never make another Chrono Trigger game.
2. Port/enhance the original to the DS
3. Remake the entire game.
while I know we'd all like 3 we only got 2 so whatever

The Wifi battles thing is kind of lame... in my opinion. Why would I sit down with someone and battle against them RPG style? Would kids even do this with only 7 playable characters or whatever?
I mean, it was great in Pokemon (when I was 12 <_< ) because there are many different monsters and it fits into the whole theme. But in Chrono Trigger? :S no... no thanks. I'd rather have more extra content.

If they know it is going to sell millions of copies then why not put that motivation into developing a "Current-gen" sequel?
