Zounds! A New Wii Controller Patent?! No.
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:00 AM on July 10, 2008
What the?! Another Nintendo controller peripheral? This recently published US Patent and Trademark Office filing would certainly convince one to believe so! That is, until one looked at the date of the patent application submission, which dates back to 2005. Sure, the patent was published on June 28 of this year, but it references foreign application data that predates the official unveiling of the Wii Remote prototype.
While it may look like a snazzy Wavebird-style controller shell, what we think we're seeing is merely the original patent for the Wii Classic Controller. That device thankfully dropped the need for multiple controller shells — others in the style of SNES and NES pads are also in the patent — and kept the Wii Remote tethered to the controller by a cord, not slotted in as seen above.
Feel free to poke around the patent, linked below, for drawings of Wii controller patents that you can colour and make your own!

@wild homes is being recast!: Oh well, maybe it's just inborn instinct. The first controller I ever picked up was a PsOne controller, and I instantly knew how to use it. Everything was easy and simple.
When I first tried the Wiimote at Gamestop for SSBB, I picked it up, went "What the hell am I supposed to do with this?", and waved it around randomly. I then tried pushing buttons, and moving it and the nunchuk, and not a thing on it made sense, because none of the buttons seemed to correspond to anything reasonable.
Why do I have to turn the Wiimote around, flip the Nunchuck 462 degrees, and press select and home at the same time to choose my character in Brawl(at least from the demo)?

@Arsenicberyllium: Well, they sort of did, they called it a patent application publication, which is what it is, but then they reverted to calling it a patent, so not quite, but close.

@wild homes is being recast!: Gotcha. I'll never buy VC stuff, what with playing all the originals I want to, but it's nice to know. Cheers!

@Arsenicberyllium: I don't know, the Wii remote looks a lot more elegant and easy to use than the DS3. The Wiimote even has soothing blue LED indicators instead of the angry red ones on the DS3. The DS3 just looks like they glued buttons onto every flat surface of the controller. The D-pad is also in four parts, which visually clutters things up a lot more.
If you like it better, that's fine, but to say it's a lot less cluttered is just patently untrue. There's simply a lot more open space on the Wiimote, and a lot less going on. Which is kind of how we judge clutter.

@n99y99r99: Actually, Kotaku specifically addressed that. So read it again.

@Krondonian: The classic controller is a lot more natural for NES and SNES games than the cube controller, because its lays the action out in a more symmetrical fashion. That's just my take.

Remember, this is not a patent, it is a patent publication!!! Who knows if it will issue. Kotaku always lets that detail slip every time they write on an issue like this.

@Ampillion = That Man.: Simple. How it looks.
I know everyone's seen both controllers, but here:
Even though the Ps3 remote has more buttons and functions, it feels less cluttered and confusing. Most of it just feels self-explanatory looking at it.

@Arsenicberyllium: Would you care to explain to me how a controller with two thumbsticks/buttons, a directional pad, four face buttons and four triggers is 'minimal' compared to one with one directional pad and six buttons?

@Arsenicberyllium: Yeah, I meant I liked the look of it too.
For me, it's just simple, and easy to use. I like the long shape, I like the colour, I like the circular buttons.
This is just personal preference of course, but I love the Wiimote. The condom things though....that's a whole different story.

My favourite thing about Kotaku's reporting style (and I've said this several times before elsewhere) is their innate ability to put two and two together to figure things out; and your willingness to do so despite the fact that you were once blackballed for it. This article is a prime example.

I've always thought the Wiimote was more functional as a projectile weapon, to be honest. Who needs throwing stars when you can wing your Wiimote at someone's head?
Oh wait, that was my younger brother's birthday...

@Krondonian: I'm not going it say the Wiimote isn't functional, I'm just saying it's damn ugly.
It's not clean or minimal, either. It's cluttered, and
it's long and obtuse. If you want clean and minimal, go for the DualShock 3. If you want unusual, yet somehow stylish, go for the Black 360 remote.
If you want something that looks like your TV remote, but painted a poor color, go for your Wiimote.

@Sportyboard: You can still attach the Wiimote to the Classic Controller if you get the Nyko grip.
If I had a choice of getting a Wiimote attachment that looks like a GC controller, or a getting a GC controller, I would just get the latter. The current classic controller is more versatile when you consider it's mainly for VC games.

@wild homes is being recast!: Oh. Well that's not very exciting.
I've never used the classic controller, but it just doesn't look comfy to me. What benefit does it have over the 'Cube controller?
@Arsenicberyllium: I think the Wiimote looks awesome. Clean, minimal, functional.

@sarcasmOD:
It may not be phallic, but it's certainly yonic. The purpose of the shell is to insert the notably phallic Wii remote into it.

@Arsenicberyllium: well this one isn't as phallic and doesn't come with an optional extra grip condom.

@Krondonian: So you can print them out and color them in.
@Green-clad Gamer Dude: I'd actually disagree. I really like having just one controller that works for all of them. I've got an NES and an SNES, and two controllers for each. I'm pleased as punch that I don't have any need to buy more than one controller.

Is this uglier than the Wiimote?
The answer:
I'm not sure. They're both so damn ugly.

Nintendo should release Wii compatible NES and SNES controllers. Sucks playing the classics with a different controller setup.

Why do these patent filings always look so boring?
I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason for them to always be so hand-written and black and white et cetera.
But what is it?

@Arsenicberyllium:
"I instantly knew how to use it. Everything was easy and simple"
That's fine, but that's not the meaning of the word "minimal". Minimal is, by definition, LESS of everything. The Wiimote has fewer buttons, fewer methods of input, and is a basic rectangle shape. Maybe the word you're looking for is "intuitive": you find the DS3 to be more intuitive than the Wiimote.

@ectogamut: Between the IR, the waggle, the tilt, etc... you could easily make the argument that the Wiimote/Nunchuk combo has far more methods of input than a PS2 controller, because on the PS2 controller everything is some form of button. The DS3 incorporates other things, of course, but most of those can be safely ignored, whereas the Wiimote demands that you attend to the extraneous methods of input.

I actually think a shell-style classic controller would be better than the current one (not multiple shells for each classic system like proposed before, but just one shell for everything). I hate having the Wii Remote dangling off like that on your lab, chair, or whatever.

Looks like its finnaly time to retire my GameCube joypads. Now, if only Nintendo would let me copy all my GC memory Cards into the Wii's (ever so short) Internal Memory, I could retire them as well.

It's so pretty! I loath the Classic controller, as it is useless for all but SNES games. Seriously, I would probably buy four of these and, like Shiryu said, put my Wavebird out to pasture. Why can't this be real!!!
