Is This Your Jumpgate Evolution Box Art?
Posted by Brian Crecente at 5:00 AM on August 1, 2008
Jumpgate Evolution, proud project of Colorado-locals NetDevil, looks to be well past the first fifteen and nearing beta.
We've received a number of tips that the NetDevil folks have put out the word that they are looking for some folks to help beta test the game. They've also sent out feelers about which box art best suits the sprawling space combat massively multiplayer online game. I think I like the first one. Fahey says his favourite is the middle. What's yours?

Fourth one all the way. 5th is nice but a bit too much.

Like most here, I'm getting way too big of a Prey vibe from the first one. I guess the fifth one?

I just did the survey too! I chose the first box. I definitely like the minimalism.

None of those are amazing. The first is nice until you decide to ask what the game is about, and the cover shows you nothing. The 2nd and 3rd are giant cluster-f**** designed to make you go, "OOH SHINY!". The fourth isn't bad, but much like the fifth, they decided to throw random elements into the picture, such as two areas where you see debris in space REALLY close to a planet. Why do you need the debris or planet there? Overall, the 5th would probably attract the most people, but they all pretty much suck.

I'm all about number 1. Simple, clean box art is always my preference. Jedi Outcast is another good example.

Hmm... The first looks too much like Prey Box Art to me, I like the second and third. Fourth seems too plain, and the last is too busy.
Between the second and third, the second looks a lot like the box art for Battlefield 2142, too.

Last (5th) one, I suppose. From first and third ones you can't really tell what's this game about.

The second resembles Battlefield 2142, and the first is much like Prey. I'd say 3 or 5.

@gdf: agreed that 1 looks like Prey.
I'd have to choose 3 as well, it has some of the features from 1 that are nice, like symmetry(at least for the sides) and has that Jumpgate. It also shows what you'd do in the game without over-cluttering too much.

i'd go with the one al the way on the right. i think that one best suits the game.

i like number two.
the darkness of it along with the glowing of the title helps that pop, and the afterburner of the ship then helps your eyes down into the action itself.
i would say number 4 as a second pick cause it reminds me of one of the gradius covers lol. ship is even kinda similar in design X3

well i have to say that when i first did this survey about 2/3 months ago (maybe more) and the game was in reaaaal early alpha, i had a go on it, found it ver responsive, good fun, easy to play with mouse and keyboard and the box art hasnt changed much at all. but i still think its gotta be one :)

As others have said, first one looks too similar in colour and style to the Prey boxart. Gotta be the 5th one I think - you can read the text well and there are no random shapes encroaching on the artwork.

I like the first one but i do agree that it looks like prey. My second choice would be the middle one.

I'd say 1, 2, or 4. 3 and 5 have too much going on and have some poor contrast choices in it.

First one looks like Prey too much. If I saw it on a shelf, I'd probably just assume that's what it was and pass it by.
Go for the middle one. Or change up the colors on the first.

The first one has a dire lack of space ships, and therefore sucks.

I like number 4 - it has no extraneous design elements and a feel of the ships rocketing out of a 'jumpgate' and all up in your grill!
I might actually try this out; I've kind of been intrigued by the game for awhile.

Well, the first one looks too much like Prey, the second is just a bit boring, the third one has some weird edge thing going on, the fourth is stupid and the fifth is nothing much. I'd go for the third one, I suppose.

I just took this survey this morning. I chose the first one- the white one.
It has a very clean, minimalistic look to it. It's symmetrical in design. It appeals to me on those parts.
We'll see what they decide!

Number two looks like Battlefield 2142, and Number five looks remeniscent of a star wars cover. I'd rather not see both again. Although number 1 does indeed look like the Prey cover as Wolfers said, it's still pretty good looking. Personally, though, I would agree with Fahey and go for number three.

I got this email too. I took the 1st as my primary favorite... I prefer mysterious, clean looking designs that inspire you to look further into it. The 3rd one was my 2nd choice, if space battles must be pictured on the front.

One would be the best if it didn't have the EXACT colors of Prey's box art. Five is the coolest.

I picked the last one. It jumps out at you and tells you, with no bullshit, that stuff will get fucked up in this game. It's a sci-fi game, with spaceships, dogfights, and explosions. All of which is conveyed on this box.
I love the look of the first one, but not for this game. I wouldn't have a clue about what type of game it is representing if I didn't already have some background info on it. Looks more suitable for Xenogears.

I suppose that Jumpgates are generic enough that JMS won't go
after them. The art in #1 looks remarkably like a Babylon 5
jumpgate. After all there aren't any B5 video games (Sierra's
was cancelled and [ifh.babylonfive.ru] is freeware.
If they redesign the jumpgate, the first box is the cleanest. The others look like generic space battle meh to me.

The first one looks like "generic sci-fi game inside" box. The 4th one is the shit's bananas, followed by 5. Gives you an idea of the game and is so space and shootastic awesome it makes me want to watch Star Trek and mastur...

Definitely the fifth one. It just looks like the coolest to me, with the ships flying around and the big planet/star shining in the background, with the title clearly visible. And I was thinking "Prey" on that first one before I read any comments down here, lol.

1st one is nice but too much like Prey. 2nd and 3rd have weird borders. 4th one is too cliche, i'm sure i've seen other games with similar box art.
So probably number 5, it still looks a little generic but at least it looks good and tells you what type of game you're looking at.

Without a context, the first one is my favourite in terms of pure design. It's neat, simple and clean. But the middle one is also pretty good. It will also probably be better marketing as prospective buyers can see what the game is about at a glance.

I'm just wondering why they got rid of the old logo and decided to use this generic Transformers font one.
I'd go with #4 if it had an actual jumpgate more prominently displayed.

4 looks like a nice view of the ships. might attract attention. 3 shows some action. 5 makes me think "i don't want to be that ship in front". so 4 imo
