Next Call of Duty Penciled In For 2009
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:20 AM on August 2, 2008
You wouldn't be surprised to learn that "an all-new Call of Duty" title will be released in 2009, would you? Good, because that's exactly what's going to happen, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, who talked up the next Call of Duty in a post earnings release con call.
Kotick said that the publisher will "leapfrog" studios, which we'll assume to mean that, since Treyarch is hard at work on Call of Duty: World At War, that Call of Duty 4 developer Infinity Ward will be taking the reins on this one.
The Infinity Ward team has one unspecified project in the works for Activision, whom it just re-signed with, rumoured to possibly have a sci-fi bent to it. Space marines? It's just crazy enough to work.

If Activision and Infinity Ward ever Make a Sci-fi, near future or Full futuristic game regardless of weather its named Cod or not, i reckon it will be the funnest. Just Imagine Cod:Future Warfare, Futuristic shadered guns with COD's famous physics engine and tick sound it makes when you shoot someone. All that + the not too shabby gfx and stable engine comapred to most put into a futuristic based game would make guns really fun to shoot, you could pull off some uber shots and it would totally own ETQW coz that sucked balls. And Battlefield 2142 was just rushed with gay physics. So i think Cod Future Warfare would be the most anticipated game. And very popular at LAN's.

As long as it's made by Infinity Ward, you know it'll be worth buying. I have yet to be disapointed by one of their games. I can't say the same about Treyarch though.
It would be nice to see a new IP coming from IF, i'll keep my fingers crossed.

I really love CoD2/4, and I'll definitely try out WaW if it's more of the same. But one huge gripe -- CoD4 allows each player to have different latencies and connection speeds; meaning whoever lags the most has the most advantage in some games, and whoever has the speediest connection in others will be seconds ahead of other players. Make and even playing field por favor! Thanks infinity!

well technicly world at war really isnt cod5 since it doesnt have a number next to it so it could be that infinity wards projects every two years would have the number. So Call of duty 5 in 2009 can't wait. Not getting World at War since i would feel wrong not having my mp5 or p90.

@Archaotic
No joke. I think that they should stop doing all of their games yearly and make them bi-yearly with 1 new IP game in between. As in Guitar Hero this year, then get that team to make a new IP the next year, and then the year after that go back and make another Guitar Hero.

Why? Sci fi? Why?
Isn't what people like about COD games the fairly realistic weapons (at least in name and model)? Turning COD 4 into a slower UTIII seems pointless to me. And I actually prefer UTIII and Halo and sci-fi shooters in general over COD (which I do like/play).
Maybe Infinity Ward could make a needler or biorifle clone feel real without going crazy, but I just think it seems risky in terms of alienating the audience they've built up for a fairly easy, noob-friendly but less arcadey shooter.

Nooooo!
Ok, I'm gutted. The only way they could get the game out this soon is if they're basically milking the COD4 engine and churning out a game.
I really *want* them to take the time and get it right. I mean, it's so rare for me to really get engaged with a Call of Duty title - sure, shooters are fun, but generally a mindless experience, and I really didn't feel that way this time.
I want to feel engaged. I want to feel like I did when I was playing COD4. I'm not going to get that if they just pump it out. :(

I would have thought the numbering issue was obvious. As they are now putting out 1 CoD game per year it will soon look silly putting a number after the title. CoD4 was subtitled Modern Warfare, The next CoD (CoD5) is tiled CoD:World at War, I see the next CoD from IW being CoD:MW2

I hope they get a hosting-game server company that knows about load-balancing and better lobby-online system management. Plus maybe they can learn that if you don't refresh/release new maps every few months, gameplay drops like a rock. Rant out.

I don't think a sci-fi Call of Duty would translate well. The reason that it did so well in the first place was the visceral feel of all the weapons since so many people could attest to the actual feel. What's making this not becoming another generic Halo/Resistance/Area-51/Killzone/Gears of War shooter?

Perhaps they could set one 20 or 30 years in the future. The weapons wouldn't be too far off from what are out now, and they could include some prototype weapons and technology.

They aren't going sci fi with it they are going back to modern day. COD4 was super successful why screw with the formula. I am not saying I would be opposed to a sci fi cod but I think they will stay the course the sci fi game will be an entirely different title. (Guitar hero in space? just kidding)

I assume this is going to be called call of duty 5 and not 6? The fact that world of war doesn't have a number kinda gives the impression that Activision aren't totally confident in Treyarch's abilities.

@lionkitten:
call of duty will never be like UT3; you can have sci fi without outlandish weapons and settings. "sci fi" could mean 30 or so years into the future in this case.
