Last Guy Released Globally Later This Month (With Extra Cities)

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:20 PM on August 5, 2008

Cheap/quick/rad PSN game The Last Guy is already out in Japan, leaving everyone outside of Japan wondering when they'll get their turn. Looks like your patience skills won't be needed for this one, as Sony's Hong Kong site has the game pegged for a global release in "August". It also says the game will ship with "many other famous cities", which we'll just take to mean that the different regional variants will ship with different, more appropriate cities. After all, not like it's hard to come up with a new level.

Tramp through major cities, dodge some zombies and save the world!

PS3 Left Out of Left 4 Dead

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on August 5, 2008

Rumours have been swirling on the internet that Valve's eagerly awaited zombie shooter Left 4 Dead for the Xbox 360 and PC would also be hitting the PLAYSTATION 3. Seems those rumours have been smashed pretty hard for the time being by Valve's Doug Lombardi, who states:

There is no PS3 version of Left 4 Dead currently in production.

Hey, maybe there will be one day! But that day is not today.

Dead Rising Wii *Might* Get To 100 Zombies At A Time

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:20 PM on August 5, 2008

Dead Rising was an average game made great by throwing, literally, hundreds and hundreds of zombies at you. The upcoming Wii version, being a Wii game, is obviously not going to feature hundreds and hundreds of zombies, putting the whole "makes an average game a great one" thing in serious jeopardy. But how many will it feature? Well, Capcom are hoping that they'll be able to squeeze 100 on there at a time. Still not a patch on the 360 version, but 100 on-screen bad guys for what is ostensibly a last-gen title would still be one hell of a technical achievement!

The Last Guy Review: Run From The Zombie Monsters!!

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:00 PM on August 5, 2008

You are the chosen one, a zombie straight from the Himalayas, here to save everyone's butts. The Last Guy: Japan Premium is a 314MB PSN title from Sony's Japan Studio. The story is simple: A purple ray hit the Earth, turning everyone who was outside into monsters or zombies. Everyone indoors was spared, and it's your job to move them from the buildings through the narrow streets of Tokyo's Asakusa (thank you Google Earth!), avoiding the monsters and the zombies and moving your group to the Escape Zone where an United Rescue Force airship will pick them up.

So here you go, our Last Guy review:

Second Halo Movie Script Lives Long Enough To Generate Concept Art

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on August 5, 2008

That first Halo movie project? With Neil Blomkamp and Peter Jackson? So dead. Never. Being. Made. But, as we already know, Halo nerd Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean, GI Joe) has stepped into the vacuum left by Jackson & co, and has written a script based on the events of the first Halo novel, Fall of Reach. That script's apparently been kicking around Hollywood for a little while now, and has a few people very interested in the project, to the point where some concept art is being drawn up "as part of an eventual presentation to Microsoft". Film site Latino Review claim to have gotten hold of some of this art, and will be posting it over the next few weeks. Which, provided our chains aren't being yanked, should be a hoot. The first piece is a little...fantastical, though LR say it's actually in the script/book. Click through for the full thing.

'No Plans for Future DLC' For Final Fantasy My Life As A King

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on August 5, 2008

Square Enix really seems to have delivered a quality experience with WiiWare title Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. In April, DLC for the city-building game was first released. DLC items were priced from 100 to 800 Wii Points and included buildings, new dungeons and ways to customise their avatar. Game site 1Up asked the game's director, Kenichiro Yuji, if there were plans for more downloadable content. He replied:

All DLC has been available since May 30. That's everything for now, and we have no plans for future DLC at the moment.

Wonder why that is...

Warhawk Trophies (and Other New Stuff) Coming At The End Of The Month

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on August 5, 2008

When the PS3 trophy system was announced in June, Warhawk was to be one of the first pre-trophy games to be brought up to speed. They weren't fibbing! Sony have announced that, as part of Warhawk's 1.5 update, over 50 trophies will be introduced into the game, and they're being offered for achievements as diverse as hosting a game for four hours, playing a "perfect deathmatch" (come 1st, no deaths) and shooting down aircraft with a tank. The update will also introduce "custom music tracks from the Home Menu", new paint schemes and insignia and a range of tutorial missions to help new players out before jumping online. It'll be released on August 27.

You Betcha We're Getting A Hardy Boys Wii Game

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 8:00 PM on August 5, 2008

The announcement that you knew somewhere in the back of your brain for that the game that you've all been waiting for is here: Yes, that's right, the Wii is getting a Hardy Boys game. Titled Hardy Boys: The Hidden Theft, the game is already slated for the PC and follows Frank and Joe as they investigate a vault burglary — only to find themselves at the centre of a major investigation! Jesse McCartney and Cody Linley (who?) from Hannah Montana (oh) will do the voicing duties. Don't think of this as a point and click adventure but a waggle and click one.

Xbox Live Phishing Scam

Our first instinct? Let this one go. If you're dumb enough to fall for a phishing scam, you deserve what you get. But then, following further consideration, we changed our minds. Because that would be mean, and we're only occasionally mean, not constantly mean. So be warned: if you get a friends message on Xbox Live - like the one above - telling you to go to loginbox to collect free MS points, don't. Because you won't.

Sony Wants To Turn India Into Game Development Nexus

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:00 PM on August 5, 2008

In an effort to further cut costs, Sony Computer Entertainment plans to further its influence in India. The company is transferring tech from its London studio to India and will also train local developers to balance costly dev costs. Says Sony's Atindriya Bose:

The future of the Indian game development market will depend on the quality of the game developers who are starting at a zero base.

The Indian subsidiary also has a PS2 game software manufacturing facility that it makes available to other publishers looking to release games on the Indian subcontinent at local price points, and Sony even earns royalities on these games as well.

Why 2K Boston Aren't Making BioShock 2

I think for us, we come out of our BioShock coma - from shipping that game, and how hard that was - and then making a determination. What's next for us, and how aggressive are we going to be?

Phil Left Sony Because Of The...PS4?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on August 5, 2008

And the clock strikes rumour o' clock. VG247 say that, according to "highly placed sources", they've learned why Phil Harrison left Sony. And it wasn't for an office door that read "Directeur Général Délégué". They say it was because development of the PS4 was about to kick off, and Phil just couldn't bring himself to go through the whole thing again.

He could see he was about to get involved in another PlayStation cycle, and obviously wanted something new. The same thing was happening again and he'd been through it enough times to want to move on.

May be true, may not be true, either way, it's a possibility. We're just surprised Sony took so long to get started on the PS4, seeing as companies normally start on their next console as soon as they're finished the last one.

Rumour: Looming PS4 cycle was real reason for Harrison's departure from Sony [VG247] [Pic]

Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 Asia Version Announced!

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 4:00 PM on August 5, 2008

During E3, Microsoft announced that Final Fantasy XIII was coming to the Xbox 360 — but only for North America and Europe. However, the Xbox 360 was not announced for Japan. Add another country to the list!

At a recent Microsoft game exhibition in Taipei, Microsoft Taiwan's Entertainment and Devices Division head Grace Chou announced that Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360 would go on sale in Taiwan, but haven't yet decided which localised version will be launched for the Asian territories.

We imagine that means it should be possible for Japanese Xbox 360 owners to import the Asia version and play it on their consoles — that is, unless the Asia FFXIII is region coded so that's impossible.

Blizzard Tell 'Fans' To Sit Down, Shut Up

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:30 PM on August 5, 2008

There are two fanbases I fear on these internets above all others. One are hardcore Fallout fans, who I picture to be something like Master Blaster from Mad Max. Sans the "Master". The other are hardcore Diablo fans, because to be honest, I can't see how you can be so into mouse clicking, and find their blind fanaticism both starkly intimidating and downright hilarious. This story, on MTV's Multiplayer, manages to capture both the fanatacism and the hilarity. It's an interview with Blizzard's Jay Wilson, art director on Diablo III. Where Wilson takes a bunch of fan "suggestions" on Diablo III's art direction - in the form of photoshopped screenshots - and tears them to pieces. Fun reading.

Fury Servers, Website To Be Shut Down Within 48 Hours

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 3:00 PM on August 5, 2008

Even with a skeleton dev team, Auran continued to work on its MMO Fury in an attempt to make it profitable, and more importantly, fun. Yet, despite a restructure and the launch of Fury League, Auran has finally closed the doors on the game, according to a post on the official forums by CEO Tony Hilliam.

The post states that Auran "reached [its] time limit" to keep Fury up and running. Out of options, the company has been forced to take the very sudden action of shutting down the game's servers and website within the next 48 hours. As such, I've included the contents of the post after the jump.

Not really a shock, or even a blip on the radar, but it signals the end of an unhappy page in the history of Australian game developers.

The Great Virtual Console Switcheroo

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:30 PM on August 5, 2008

As pointed out by Wired, over the past week or so, a number of publishers made announcements regarding today's Virtual Console lineup. Capcom said we'd get Mega Man 1, SNK said we'd get Samurai Shodown II and Hudson said we'd be getting Ys Book I & II. Instead, we got the shitty Mega Drive version of Sonic and Splatterhouse. Not the worst update, sure, but nowhere near as awesome as the one we were promised. So what gives? Nintendo say:

A number of variables can affect a game's release date. Therefore, the Wii-kly Update is the only authority for confirmed release dates of Virtual Console games.

Thanks for the surprise! Here's a hint: when the publishers themselves announce a release date, and you go and yank it, it's not a surprise. It's a disappointment.

GO3 2008: A Reader's Report

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 2:00 PM on August 5, 2008

go3_rock.jpgAugust 1-3 saw GO3 land at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre. According to the official (and rather flashy) website, GO3 is all about the "latest in technology, communication, electronic games, in-car technology, communication, education & training [and] home audio". Sadly, Perth isn't the most accessible place in the world and, as such, the event remains a mystery to me.

Not to worry, as reader Theodore suggests this is probably a good thing. In fact, he was kind enough to offer his reporting services to document the event, even though it turned out to be rather unexciting. If you'd like to have a read and view some photos, just hit the jump.

As an aside, if you're in a position to attend an event or see something super-special or gaming related and would like to write about it, let me know!

Mega Man 9 To Include NES 'Bugs'

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on August 5, 2008

Mega Man 9 doesn't just look and sound like a NES game. It's going to play like one, and feel like one, to the point where you'll experience some of the glitches and bugs found in old NES titles. Capcom's Hironobu Takeshita has told Gamasutra that players will have the option (literally, via the options menu) to introduce and adjust old-timey NES glitches like screen flicker. Even though new, modern sytems are of course not prone to flickering. Sure, it's the "pre-faded jeans" of the gaming world, but this is the gaming world, not the clothing world, so we're all good.

'Steve Jobs, Not A Gamer'

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 1:00 PM on August 5, 2008

When you say "Apple", gaming is probably the last thing that comes to mind here. And id's John Carmack thinks he knows why:

The truth is Steve Jobs doesn't care about games. This is going to be one of those things that I say something in an interview and it gets fed back to him and I'm on his shithead list for a while on that, until he needs me to do something else there. But I think that that's my general opinion. He's not a gamer... It's difficult to ask somebody to get behind something they don't really believe in. I mean obviously he believes in the music and the iTunes and that whole side of things, and the media side of things, and he gets it and he pushes it and they do wonderful things with that, but he's not a gamer. That's just the bottom line about it.

That doesn't mean that Carmack is down on the iPhone or anything as a gaming platform, he just doesn't think gaming is priority numero uno for Jobs. So there you have it. John Carmack thinks Steve Jobs isn't a gamer. Who doesn't agree with that?

Question Time: Guitar Hero: World Tour Or Rock Band 2?

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 1:00 PM on August 5, 2008

rb_vs_gh.jpgA hard choice for some, a simple one for others. If you're keen on rhythm games, music and multiple instruments, fate suggests you will have to unload cash on one of these games and their related hardware. And, at ~$400 a pop, most don't have the luxury of picking up both. In essence, EA and Activision are competing for your cash and your loyalty.

Personally, Guitar Hero: World Tour has my vote, if only because of EA/Harmonix's track record. And, with Rock Band 2 apparently due out before even Rock Band gets here, one has to wonder who would buy the original at all, especially with the pricing EA's released so far. I'm scared to think how much Rock Band 2 will cost... if we see it this year.

So, which one (or neither) has your vote and why?

A Quake MMO? id Software's Not So Keen

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 12:30 PM on August 5, 2008

q3_peep.jpgA Quake-based MMO from id? Yeah, that won't be happening anytime soon. In an interview with Shacknews, John Carmack made it clear there are no racing hearts over massively multiplayer titles at the company, even though it was offered a pretty penny to have a crack:

Saying that id had passed on several offers of "good money" to develop a Quake MMO, Carmack added that the company would not be attempting a similar project anytime soon.

"id has no interest in MMO development", said Carmack, who added that while he is familiar with the technology, he is also "fully cognisant" of the challenges and risks of creating a game in the genre.

I'm not surprised - just look how PlanetSide turned out. If a developer wants to make an FPS MMO, they're going to have to make it something special - preferably without face-melting, ganking and a race of gurgling fish people.

EA CEO: We're Not About Crappy Licensed Games (Anymore)

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:00 PM on August 5, 2008

Electronic Arts has gotten some flack in the past for being guilty of publishing licenced games that range from not bad to barely adequate to Catwoman. Efforts based on James Bond, Superman, Lord of the Rings, and Def Jam have seen solid sales and, in some cases, equal derision. But it's 2008 line-up is packed with original IP. Stuff like Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Facebreaker, Left 4 Dead, Crysis, and Spore dominated its E3 line up.

The very frank John Riccitiello, CEO of EA, tells MTV Multiplayer "I think we take a step back every time we take a licence and exploit it with a crappy game". He adds "That's not what we're about", noting that whatever changing perceptions gamers may have of the company aren't part of a conscious decision to change its image.

Whether that change is working — or responsible for the quarter-smile on Riccitiello's official bio photo — remains to be seen.

Flower, Sun, and Rain Trailer High In Suda-isms, Commercial Impractibility

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:30 AM on August 5, 2008

The Europeans are lucky enough to get Goichi "Suda51" Suda's mystery adventure game Flower, Sun and Rain for the Nintendo DS this October. We, the rest of the Earth, are at least able to enjoy the game's trailer, which not only features someone (Suda?) taking the Nestea plunge, but has pink alligators and a fantastic smooth jazz soundtrack — the kind that makes me want to donate my ears to the less fortunate.

Described as "an unyielding Groundhog Day style adventure", Flower, Sun, and Rain is a remake of the PlayStation 2 release of the same name. The trailer proudly proclaims that "Suda51's masterpiece is finally here" which we hope isn't a slight to the man's other titles.

True story: I once shared a cab with Suda. That's the entire story. It was largely uneventful as everyone made it home safely in a short amount of time.

Halo 3 Coming To Windows... Confirmed?

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:00 AM on August 5, 2008

Reader Simon wrote in to us this weekend to let us know that he'd received an e-mail, one targeted at "subscribers to the MS download email service", that listed Halo 3 as one of the downloadable demos that take advantage of DirectX. Does that mean that Halo 3 is confirmed for a Games For Windows release? Not so fast, pal.

Sure, it's entirely possible, given that Halo and Halo 2 both made the Xbox 360 to PC jump about two years after their respective console releases. And, sure, games like Gears of War have been inadvertently "announced" for the Windows platform in marketing materials, but you're really jumping to conclusions here. You think Microsoft is going to let something like this leak?

After all, only about 98.44% of Microsoft-based rumours are true. We're following up with the company to get our sweet taste of carefully worded denial right now.

LittleBigPlanet Still Has A Secret

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:40 AM on August 5, 2008

Media Molecule's Alex Evans has mastered the art of the tease. Case in point: the co-founder of the UK based studio tells Eurogamer that he has designs on "another LittleBigPlanet reveal that people don't see coming".

Evans is mum on the specifics of the next big reveal, but hints that"people will be saying, 'I thought it was this - now you're telling me it's this as well?!'" indicating that there's something we still might not know about the depth of LittleBigPlanet.

We've heard plenty of talk about a good number of Sony's other first party studios designing the game's pre-playable levels, but somehow doubt that this the gaming public will consider this an announcement on par with LBP's reveal. Any guesses?

While the surprise announcements that did come out of the Square Enix DKΣ3713 Private Party were definitely post-worthy, Final Fantasy Agito XIII coming to the PSP is a big deal doesn't hold a candle to oddball product cross-collaborations. The biggest news to come out of the weekend event was that Square Enix and Roen would be releasing Final Fantasy Versus XIII formal wear, real world items worn by in-game characters — perfect for the prom!

It looks like the collaboration works both ways, as this is more than just cheap cosplay stuff. Roen looks to have worked with Square Enix on character designs for Versus XIII.

Xbox Avatars Can't Be Killed, Limited To E Rated Titles Only

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:40 AM on August 5, 2008

Like you, when I first laid eyes and opinion upon the new Xbox 360 Avatars, the first thought I had was "When will I be able to disembowel these superdeformed simulacra and prance about in their virtual guts in-game?" Sadly, the answer is "not anytime soon" as Xbox Live general manager Eric Kilgore revealed at the recent Gamefest that the Rare designed Mii-toos would only be appearing in E-rated titles. For now.

Kilgore, according to a Develop report, says that current Microsoft policy limits Avatar usage in titles of the E-10 or safer variety. "That doesn't mean it won't change - but this Fall they won't be able to blow each other's heads off", Kilgore said.

We're hoping that Microsoft shot-callers come to their senses and ensure that Avatars are given the chance to be gored and dismembered as soon as possible. And we're talking Soldier of Fortune-style limb destruction. I'm planning on beating the bejeezus out of my Crecente Avatar on a regular basis.

Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad Coming To 360

Posted by Mike Fahey at 8:20 AM on August 5, 2008

Why should Wii owners have all the bikini zombie slaying fun? Eagle-eyed Kotakuite Jeff caught a listing on D3Publisher's website for Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad, an Xbox 360 exclusive version of the game. Control both sisters, Aya and Saki, as they strive to save the earth from zombie infestation. A special dress-up mode allows you to unlock special costumes and outfit the girls as you see fit, so I'm pretty much sold already. Others might enjoy Story Mode, Free Play Mode, Survival Mode, and Quest Mode, but I'm all about playing dress-up and then showing off my outfits via co-op multiplayer.

D3Publishers is being a bit sneaky with this one, as I found no mention whatsoever of the game outside of their page, but we'll be sure to update you as soon as we have info on a release target, more gameplay details, or pictures of the pretty, pretty clothing.

Midway Loses $US 34.8 Million For The Quarter

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 7:40 AM on August 5, 2008

Midway Games announced today that it lost $US 34.8 million last quarter, which members of the financial community often refer to as "not so good". That's a considerable jump from the same quarter last year, in which Midway lost $US 14.3 million. Unless you're a Midway share holder and concerned about the loss of $US 0.38 per basic and diluted share, you're probably more interested in a screen shot of Johnny Cage trying to nut punch a baby.

So, what did Midway release in the second quarter? NBA Ballers: Chosen One for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, for one thing. It also lists the European release of Unreal Tournament III for the PS3 as one of its "operating highlights".

It expects things to look a little better for the next few months, with TNA iMPACT! contributing to an estimated $US 52 million in revenue. You know, they should really put some actual T & A in that game instead of focusing on oiled-up dudes. That'd sell, like, hundreds.
