Halo 3 Coming To Windows... Confirmed?
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:00 AM on August 5, 2008
Reader Simon wrote in to us this weekend to let us know that he'd received an e-mail, one targeted at "subscribers to the MS download email service", that listed Halo 3 as one of the downloadable demos that take advantage of DirectX. Does that mean that Halo 3 is confirmed for a Games For Windows release? Not so fast, pal.
Sure, it's entirely possible, given that Halo and Halo 2 both made the Xbox 360 to PC jump about two years after their respective console releases. And, sure, games like Gears of War have been inadvertently "announced" for the Windows platform in marketing materials, but you're really jumping to conclusions here. You think Microsoft is going to let something like this leak?
After all, only about 98.44% of Microsoft-based rumours are true. We're following up with the company to get our sweet taste of carefully worded denial right now.

Halo 3 is one of their most popular PC games? Man I knew PC gaming was dead but for a game that doesn't even exist to be the most popular PC game?

Halo 2 was absolutely horrid on PC, and the sales reflected this. It sold horribly too. This is why if H3 comes to PC, I will be surprised, with no sarcasm hinted.

This would be pretty cool. Still you PC gamers would be far better off playing Halo:CE/Halo 2 instead.

@BoringJob: To be fair though they are timed exclusives. But if you don't mind the wait (and usually worth it for a better port) and have a decent PC then getting a 360 is kind of pointless IMO. It's the main thing that has stopped me from buying one anyway.

@Atheist Jew:
on the controller thing.
M$ has this knack for making their games play better with the controller, even on the PC, by giving keybo/mouse users a "handicap" and increasing the recoil immensely.
for sniping and range the keybo/mouse are still superior, but for automatic guns in these games (Halo 2, and Gears show what i speak of, Halo 1 didn't do it) the recoil is annoyingly exaggerated compared to if you just used a gamepad.
worst thing is, they deliberately rig the games to only accept the bloody 360 controller.

@Atheist Jew: simply for the portability..being able to play H3 online where ever I am, whenever i want to, on my laptop.
oh and will PC users be up against 360 users?..like in Shadowrun

@BoringJob:
?!?!
alright M$ does port THEIR games over, but the 360 has its exclusives that stay exclusive to the console.
the newer Dead or Alive games for example, or Tenchu Z, Ace Combat 6, ninja Gaiden 2, and so on.
so erm... aside from emulations on PC, not "EVERYTHING" shows up on windows.
they've said it all before, Rockstar does the same thing these days.
"there are "no plans" to port it to the PC platform at this time" is actually more like "we're just not doing it yet as we haven't picked a dev team to do the port"
Halo wasn't supposed to go PC, nore Halo 2, but both made it over, so its only obvious Halo 3 will once sales are slumped on the console version.
after all the console versions of games get more money per unit than the PC ones anymore (especially since M$ decided that console games are worth "so" much more than PC games, despite the PC's Superior power as a whole, its failings are to blame on shelf bought pre-built systems that carry cheap onboard parts and idiots who think they can play games on a $500 laptop from dell.

I really don't understand how anyone could be surprised at this. It's Microsoft, it's Bungie, and it's Halo. Every other Halo game has been released on the PC, why wouldn't Halo 3 be?
@eddienoteddy: Uh...if you're just going to play the game with the 360 controller, what's the point? I would suppose the two main reasons to get this game on the PC would be 1) You don't own a 360, and 2) To play the game with the far-superior FPS control scheme of the mouse and keyboard. Why in the world would you play an FPS on a PC with an exceptionally crappy control scheme when you could experience exactly the same thing on the 360?

@BoringJob:
The 360 does have a lot of exclusives actually, and lets be honest, generally the windows versions are released when the xbox version has run its course sales wise. Why NOT release it on the PC? Why can't we have PS3 games on the PC? I wanna play Ratchet and Clank but im not gonna buy a PS3 for it. No way, but if it came to the PC a year from now Id buy it day one.
@jParadox:
BUT BUT BUT if youre a pc gamer you're not allowed to like halo!!!
Shocker: I'm also a PC gamer. I love Halo and I also own an Xbox 360 because it has the exclusives I want. Many of them arent on the PC like Ninja Gaiden 2, Forza 2, Lost odyssey etc.

I'll be purchasing this game, Halo 3, when it comes out for the PC, since everyone knows its coming. Sure, I can get it for the 360, but the problem is my boyfriend isn't going to let me take his 360 home. Bad enough I bug him for his Wii to play Manhunt 2.
Besides, I actually *gasp shock horrors* enjoy playing the Halo games on the computer, WITHOUT the 360 controller! (Waiting for: like OMFG is you for realz??!?!)
Meh. We'll see what becomes of this. But Halo 3 for the PC will be mine.

Halo 2 Vista was the worst port ever. When did it seem like a good idea to "balance" mouse and keyboard players against controller users? "Hey, let's make the mouse and keyboard SUCK for this FPS" must have been the first sentence spoken at that meeting. As a long time Halo PC player, I was very excited for H2V. It absolutely flopped. The controls were terrible, the game was slightly buggy and never received anywhere near the same number of patches as H1 to remedy them, and to top it all off they made you pay for LIVE. If I wanted to pay for online games I'd get a WOW subscription and an Xbox360.
This is why I don't use a PS3 and a PC. Free online 99% of the time on the PC, and completely free no strings attached access to PSN. Paying for something that's been free for so long feels like someone's trying to steal from me.
With any luck H3PC will be worthwhile and won't try to be Vista only to get people to upgrade. I built a computer for H2V to replace my previous iMac that I played Halo on since October 2005, and bought Vista for it so it would run Halo 2 when it came out. Unless they include actual DX10 effects (They won't, the Xbox doesn't have DX10 capabilities), they should allow it to run on XP as well.
Hopefully Microsoft will make a good port by shoving the development to Gearbox, who unlike "HiredGun", the internal studio at Microsoft that did the H2V port and added shitty online maps, Gearbox made a few new maps that were extremely well thought out. The port was very good overall, and with any luck they'll remember to send it to an outside developer who can do it RIGHT.

Being a PC gamer, this is a funny argument imo since there are so many 360 exclusives that you can't get on the PC. Forza 2, ace combat 6, virtua fighter 5 online, Dead or alive 4, dead rising, ninja gaiden 2, lost odyssey etc...
With more games coming like, Fable 2, Banjo Kazooie 3, Too Human, and Gears of War 2.
Yes Im sure Gears 2 will come to the PC but if you wanna wait a year then thats up to you. I didnt like gears on the PC. You could tell it was built for a gamepad.

@Sheen_Latrine:
horrid how? it was the same game with higher res GFX.
if anything it was BETTER than the Xbox one.
the reason it sold so bad is cause its Vista only, and very few people want to move to vista.
i dual boot with XP/Vista, but i use vista sparingly as its unstable crap (it likes to crash a LOT if you have less than 100 gig open on the HD its installed upon... i've seen it do this on 2 separate comps)
its usualy only for the FEW DX10 games and... well thats really it.
But Halo 2 for the PC was a much better experience on the PC by far, the MP on the other hand was, and is crap, mostly since the people playing it are even moreso pre-teen whiners than the damned console players in the same game! and despite you can HEAR that a few of'em do have mics, they don't say anything, but you can hear them laugh and giggle and use their little emo l33t spoken language.

@GrimCW: Eh? Unstable? Currently I use it as my main OS (I also have a dual-boot XP/Vista machine), and I have it installed in an 80GB partition, with 46GB currently free. I have yet to have Vista crash, even before SP1. My specs are: P4 3.2GB, 2GB PC3200, 120GB HD (Partitioned 80/40) with another 120GB HD as backup, NVidia 8600GT with 256MB RAM dedicated. It's a homebuilt, like all my computers. If it's unstable, it sounds like a driver conflict to me.
I do have Halo installed on the XP partition, and I do like the idea of using my keyboard and mouse to control it, but all the same, if I do buy Halo 3, it'll be on the 360.

Well, if they up the graphics a couple notches then I'll probably buy it. Halo 3 is a good looking game, but it's not up to par with the AAA games that have been coming out since it launched.
And oh yeah, I don't have to bring my 360 to school this year--all of its best games are now available for my PC.
I guess that is good for us, bad for Microsoft, but hey, if they wanna shoot themselves in the foot with their 360 killer apps no longer being exclusives, I guess thats cool with me!

I was hoping that with the inclusion of a full set of map creation tools for Halo 2 on the pc, it was leading to one that would allow greater creativity than forge in Halo 3.
This could be the item that was mentioned in a Bungie Weekly update, that would "change how multiplayer works dramatically". (not an exact quote). I'm thinking that Halo 3 PC owners will at the least be able to play with 360 owners, but I'm thinking that we might be able to take user created content and share it with 360 owners.
wishful dreaming..........

On another note, does no one remember the interview with a Microsoft PR guy from a few years back? I think it was E3 06. But the one detail I remember from this interview was that Microsoft was planning to move away from the 360/PC thing due to the negative, "oh, I'll wait for the PC version" stigma. Does anyone remember this?

@fenderfuel08:
I still laugh at how people say its no longer exclusive if it is also available on PC.. Actually at least only a relative few think that, as the rest have enough cells left to realize Microsoft pretty much *OWNS* the PC platform by default. So what does it mean that it is also available on PC? Nothing. It means Microsoft let one of their games move to another of their platforms. Thats like saying Sony lost Ratchet by letting it go to the PSP. It makes no sense, as it is another of their own platforms. The PC and 360 both have their own experiences and uses, they compliment each other, not compete.
