Mega Man 9 To Include NES 'Bugs'
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on August 5, 2008
Mega Man 9 doesn't just look and sound like a NES game. It's going to play like one, and feel like one, to the point where you'll experience some of the glitches and bugs found in old NES titles. Capcom's Hironobu Takeshita has told Gamasutra that players will have the option (literally, via the options menu) to introduce and adjust old-timey NES glitches like screen flicker. Even though new, modern sytems are of course not prone to flickering. Sure, it's the "pre-faded jeans" of the gaming world, but this is the gaming world, not the clothing world, so we're all good.

@liquidnumb: Actually, it IS more work because they are using a brand new engine for it, so those problems don't actually exist naturally. Part of what they are doing is actually going in and deliberately programming these bugs in. So they really are doing more work by putting them in there, which I think is completely awesome.

@All the haters: You guys don't seem to get that it's optional. They are adding optional glitches as a nostalgic touch. Capcom is just replicating the vintage gaming experience for those of us who still play our NESes to this day.

I don't see why people, especially those who were old enough to play the original Mega Man games, find this a pointless addition. Sure it doesn't enhance the gameplay in any way, but it shows that Capcom's going that extra mile to pay even more homage to the retro NES titles that started it all. And in the end, isn't that what Mega Man 9 is really all about anyway - as a tribute to gamers who feel nostalgic when playing Mega Man 1 or 2?
Besides, it's just an -option-, if you don't like it, don't use it. Be thankful they give you the choice rather than forcing it upon you like it's 1987.

Shame Nintendo didn't keep most of their games the same for when they put them on the Virtual Console.
The fact Peppy doesn't say 'Do a Barrel Roll!' in StarFox 64 put me off buying the game on the Wii, so the fact some developers are going out of their way to just include these minor details in their games just shows how much they want to give the player the feeling of the original game even on a newer console.

Everyone has caught the retro bug and it is driving me crazy. Sure I got a brand new Mega Man 2 cart for Christmas in '89 and played the hell out of it but when the new systems came out I have always embraced them. Call me crazy but I have never once thought to myself that X game would be better with flashes, glitches, MIDI sound, slowdown or freezes.
Look at my avatar Capcom, that is how you remake retro without using any gimmicks.

I am a huge retro fan whose first system was the 2600, but flicker is not something I miss. I play my NES games frequently and I have never wished that my other systems had flicker. It is neat that this is a feature for faux authenticity (even though it is really the opposite of authentic), but I would not use it myself. I am not condemning people who would want to use it. Maybe when modern games have slowdown or dropped frame rates, they can call it a feature.

@Enigma_20XX:
Because they're not serious, game breaking glitches. They're extra touches for those of us that can look back on our childhood and fondly remember almost destroying your controller after a combination of flicker and slowdown caused you to miss that disappearing block in Iceman's stage for the fifth time.
Thank you, Capcom. I shall gladly devote at least one play through of this to NES glitch mode.

I can't believe you guys haven't figured this out yet. Mega man 9 is probably gonna run on a nes emulator, that's why there are optional glitches. This could very well be the cheapest game capcom has ever made!

While it's a bit gimmicky (as most gamers would prefer NOT to deal with that kind of garbage), it's nice that they're not forcing those "quirks" on us.

@IronsUK: No, I completely agree with you.
First, let me say this: I have no problem with them including this, especially since it's optional. According to this thread, a lot of people will enjoy it.
However:
I played the hell out of the Mega Man series. Especially Mega Man 2. But in no way, shape or form do I miss MIDI soundtracks, flashing sprites, slowdown, etc. Yes, I still love the sometimes agonizingly unforgiving gameplay, but I would have really like it if they had decided to make Mega Man 9 in HD with modern audio and kept the same classic Mega Man gameplay.
It was amazing how much I loved the Mega Man 2 soundtrack. (Dr. Wily Fortress Level 1 was my favorite...oh my god. So good!) But I was always longing for the day when all games could have real music and not the synthesized stuff. I had many conversations with a friend longing for the day when Final Fantasy would be able to use a real orchestra for their fantastic music.
I guess I can be nostalgic about gameplay, but out-dated graphics and audio don't really do it for me. =P I'm such a cold-hearted bastard.

@Enigma_20XX: faulty game does not equal option for retro shit.
its no different than uncharted having a "next gen filter" that turns the game brown, or SSFII Turbo for SNES keeping the odd red fireball from ryu in there randomly to emulate the glitch from the arcade.
you're, again, complaining about an option that's purposely there to fit the retro scheme that clearly outdates you.

@Garo: oh, alright, guess the art's not for everyone.
but still, bionic commando and the like are remakes, if this is a new game, im still not sure that applies. i figure youre just saying why do it 8-bit at all then, when the answer (presumably) is retro value, aside from pleasant production costs on their end, heh.

@Helkaurain:
That's the most pathetic excuse I've ever heard...
@TheIrishNinja: IT'S AN OPTION TO TURN A CHEAPLY MADE 8-BIT GAME INTO A CHEAPLY MADE, GLITCHY 8-BIT GAME, YOU MORON!!!! And do you know how old I am, boy?
if they put so much effort into adding this "feature," you'd think they'd put a little more effort into the game, period! Good god, they could have done Mega Man Powered Up 2!!!

WTF? Since when were glitches a perk to help sell your game? I think this may be the first time anybody in history has ever tried to point out that their game includes glitches, and that's a good reason for you to buy it. Yeah these guys have gone a little off the deep end.

Megaman 4 remains the musically best one to my tastes.
Skull man made me love video game music.

I used to bitch, bitch and bitch about this game, but since the boxart, I find all of this a truly genius sense of humor from Capcom.

Part of me is excited for this game. Most of me wishes they used high-res 2D hand-drawn graphics and an orchestral soundtrack. With NES game mechanics. Now THAT would be mind-blowing.
Still, if the price is right, I will buy.

Why would anyone complain about this? The idea is to recreate the experience of the classic Mega Man games. I think that sort of aesthetic decision goes a long way. And if you don't like it, turn it off.

So it'll couple a "No ability to Save" option with a "Horrible Game-Crashing Bug that occurs if you do something slightly off on the final level" option, right?

Well obviously they would have to. Those NES bugs were so numerous that they became an actual part of Megaman gameplay. You know how you can sometimes get an enemy to walk off the screen and disappear. Me and my friends call that "RAM killing."

@Shaoko: You do realize, smartass, that I only have a problem with the EIGHT-BIT GRAPHICS, right?
Or are you a smartass because your head is wedged up there?
