'No Plans for Future DLC' For Final Fantasy My Life As A King
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on August 5, 2008
Square Enix really seems to have delivered a quality experience with WiiWare title Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. In April, DLC for the city-building game was first released. DLC items were priced from 100 to 800 Wii Points and included buildings, new dungeons and ways to customise their avatar. Game site 1Up asked the game's director, Kenichiro Yuji, if there were plans for more downloadable content. He replied:
All DLC has been available since May 30. That's everything for now, and we have no plans for future DLC at the moment.
Wonder why that is...

@El-Suave: Maybe this is some joke I don't get, but that sounds pretty much like the "Nintendo Channel" they already have?

My guess is they didn't make enough money out of the first DLC or even the game. Why bother releasing further content?
It would be nice to hear some numbers from Nintendo or Square...

i wonder if the Crystal bearers still exist. It´s been a while since the last trailer, even before, "my life as a king"

Hopefully it's because every last man is working on The Crystal Bearers.
I mean true that to advertising more and better. But concentrating on Wii development wise on a more serious title than My Life as King is.... needed.

@DariusEnigma:
I see I'm not the only one who has a broad sword for chime. =/
This game was really fun until my adventurers started to become stupid and all the high level guys would only want to go to low level dungeons and all the low level guys wanted to go to the high level dungeons. Then I just kinda gave up.

Nintendo needs to find a way to advertise these games more to people who only use the Wii. They should at least have a streming video preview of each game or even better, a review channel where the better games are reviewed.

So… how much does the full game including all the content they removed from the initial purchase cost then?

And here I was hoping they'd make a Chime Dominatrix download.

Guess, MS has paid them so much that they are still counting that money. They don't have to indulge in petty stuff now.

I think part of the failure of this title is that every bit of DLC cost you something. Seriously - does a new skin for Chime or the king really need to cost something? Would it really hurt them to provide some of the DLC for... free? Obviously, the items that change the gameplay experience should probably cost something, or new levels, etc., but I don't believe everything should.
I've played the game with a majority of the DLC and I don't think it is anything to rave about. While it isn't a bad game, it isn't a great game, either. Squeenix and WiiWare titles should be like what they used to release on the PS1 when they were trying their hand at everything. Man, I would have loved a WiiWare Einhander or something.

Yeah, I think the pricing was WAY too aggressive for a wii ware title. I mean, PSN and XBL games are priced much more competitively. I'm guessing they figured with the captive wii audience, they could gouge a little.
I wonder if there is any plan to drop the price?

@El-Suave: Nintendo already has that. It's the Nintendo Channel.
If you were trying to make a funny, you failed.

I think the entire strategy seems underhanded at best. The DLC comes out right alongside the game, meaning it was developed at the same time, but they simply didn't include it with the game. Then there's really no way of knowing the game has DLC until you buy it and reach a point where it tells you to go get mommy's credit card. So they don't tell you you're buying what's basically an incomplete game. Weak.

How about making a real Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Wii game? (And not Crystal Bearers) One like the gamecube one but with online co-op. Do it now, FF CC team!

I wanted to get this game, but it smelled of rip-off.

@Accordion: They didn't remove content. WiiWare was supposed to originally launch in February 08, at that point MLAK was done and ready to go. When Nintendo delayed launch until May, that is when they decided to add in the extra pay content. They covered all this at GDC.
Really, if people would actually look at what the DLC content is, it's pretty damn obvious it's last minute stuff (a dungeon that gives you more item shops, weapon shops, a never ending dungeon, etc.). None of it radically changes anything and you can complete the game quite easily without any of it. It is just there for those who are really into the game and want to customize the holy hell out of it.

I wish they would make more DLC... possibly a bank, I always have money problems in the game. My wife and I play it allot.
I like the game so much, I even made a city builder webapp

(pure java script, no plugins needed)
I just wish I could find a community around the game, the closest i could find is the gamefaqs board. I was told that there is a larger Japanese following, but sadly I don't speak Japanese, so I can't look.

There was DLC for a Wii game? Wow, where was I? Hopefully Square is working on a serious title for the Wii. Nintendo really hasn't advertised Wii Ware. There should be TV commercials, because I'm sure casual gamers aren't that aware of the service.

A little dissappointing to hear. The game is very good, and one that I can see my self picking up again in a few months. Worth the $15 base price, and if you dig the core game, one can see some value in the DLC.
If they're stopping DLC to make a sequel MLAAK, I'm happy about that :)

@dry-roasted-peanuts: I am glad you like it. I wanted to experiment with GWT a bit, and see what I could make. Sadly, to save/load maps, I have to integrate it with a back end server, right now what you see is 100% client side. The web server is just serving files.
I like MLAAK. I also loved sim games like Sim City and Princess Maker... which this feels like a merger of. I do wish there was a bit more documentation, or at least let Squeenix host some forums so people could compare notes. Not everything is obvious. Of course, this goes back to my wish that there was some sort of community around it. meh.
I wonder what they are going to do with it in the future... MLAAK sequel, maybe focus on the upcoming Wii FFCC game? From reading the dev blogs and interviews, this game only became a Final Fantasy game later in development, as they just started with a game, and fit the world in later.

I thought it was a pretty fun game really. I don't regret buying any of the DLC. It had me entertained through a fever.

Was there any sales data released on this and the DLC for it yet?

It's a 25 dollar game if you want the important DLC. 30 dollars for extra stuff. Really, it's not that of a price for 30 bucks, considering I bought Zack and Wiki for 40.

I'd wager a few bucks that it's because the dev team for it has already moved on, and they're not going to move them back just to add a little DLC, not unless it's selling *ridiculously* well. (If it's just selling "well", they'll probably plan their next game-with-DLC strategy to include more, but still not change MLAK.)

It seems to sell well for WiiWare. Since we don't know the numbers on WiiWare purchases it's hard to say how significant this is but it's usually in the top 5 WiiWare games downloaded in NA every week:

I still haven't tried this game. Is there any replay value? Maybe I'll get it when I've worked through Toki Tori. I'm trying not to overwhelm my poor Wii with downloads.
Hopefully they're busy making another Wii title, even though nobody payed attention to Chocobo's Dungeon.

@Naturestee: Replay value on this title, I think, is pretty... dubious. Once you play through it and beat it one, you get access to the "New Game Plus", which allows you to replay the game at a higher difficultly level with access to some other buildings (which I believe is only one, which is the Luxurious House). In this New Game Plus mode, it retains your heroes from the previous game with their level and items and such, and you get to rehire them if you'd like. Other than this, I believe the game is the same on subsequent playthrus.
