The Great Virtual Console Switcheroo
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:30 PM on August 5, 2008
As pointed out by Wired, over the past week or so, a number of publishers made announcements regarding today's Virtual Console lineup. Capcom said we'd get Mega Man 1, SNK said we'd get Samurai Shodown II and Hudson said we'd be getting Ys Book I & II. Instead, we got the shitty Mega Drive version of Sonic and Splatterhouse. Not the worst update, sure, but nowhere near as awesome as the one we were promised. So what gives? Nintendo say:
A number of variables can affect a game's release date. Therefore, the Wii-kly Update is the only authority for confirmed release dates of Virtual Console games.
Thanks for the surprise! Here's a hint: when the publishers themselves announce a release date, and you go and yank it, it's not a surprise. It's a disappointment.

@kyle: Add this to the pile of...
"My Wii is packed up in the closet."
"I sold my Wii two days after I bought it."
"I use my Wii as a coaster."
etc...
I have mine hooked up to my TV. I'm not sure why all these other people don't do the same. It works better when it's hooked up to a TV.

my wii is in a box under the shelf and will only emerge again if jet force bloody gemini comes out on virtual console. or METAL WARRIORS. or that mega drive side-scrolling brawler that is light streets of rage with customisable robots. you could have BUZZSAWS FOR ARMS. or, y'know, a good game.
god i'm hungover.

As an kid, I was pretty impressed with Sonic on the Sega Master System (which was pretty big in Australia). It had a charming little map to progress through, and hunting for chaos emeralds in the levels rather than bonus levels actually took some of the frustration out IMO.
Was it as good as Sonic's MegaDrive debut? No. But it wasn't complete crap either. It's a completely different game, not a port.

@Ueziel: Speaking of, I'm jealous of Japanese gamers right now. I'd kill for an English version of Y's I & II on the DS. *sigh*

Actually, the worst probably would be this:
Announcement: "Coming next month to the Virtual Console... get your yo-yo ready for some action! The trilogy that's been talked about for years, including the third game in the series, never before released in the U.S.!
Reality: Duncan's Yo-Yo Adventures, Yo-Yo Adventures 2: Walk The Dog (featuring Petz), and Yo-Yo Adventures 3: Around The World.
Either that or they release Night Trap and N64's Superman.

@Ueziel: My friend had imported a PC Engine way back in the way back, and had Y's Book I and II on it.. in Japanese. In the days before internet. We spent many an hour trying to figure out what the hell to do on that game.

@TheIrishNinja: No doubt.
The SMS was originally known as the Sega Mark III in Japan, at least according to Wikipedia. Maybe that's what you were thinking of?

@MrBionic: shit, i think youre right. my bad, i totally had it in my head that it was the super mega drive or some ridiculous name that doesnt work outside of nintendo naming schemes, hah. but yeah, hes referring to the master system sonic.

Ys has many sequels. Go look it up. It's an excellent action/adventure RPG series. Although honestly, I really doubt newer gamers even have the ability to appreciate the series.

I haven't gotten a VC game in quite a while, I think the last one was Sin & Punishment. If SSII did hit, I'd buy it. Mega Man 1... maybe. Now what's this Ys? Must of been good enough for a sequel, eh?

Although, I can guarantee the moment Super Mario RPG:The Legend of the Seven Stars is released, I'll be buying one.

Here's an idea, Nintendo:
Release more than two Virtual Console games at a time! If other publishers have finished the conversions of their old games to the VC format (the emulator used, the virtual manual, etc.)... then put their games up!

Mr. Plunkett worded things incorrectly...there should be a rewrite with the link reading something like "The shitty Mega Drive version of Splatterhouse and the Master System Sonic".

"The shitty Mega Drive version of Sonic..."
Does Plunkett not realize that he just referred to the Genesis classic Sonic as "shitty", and that it's not even the game he was referring to?
And once again, I say, do't belittle the GG/MS Sonic 1. It may have been technologically inferior to the Genesis game, but it was still a lotta fun. And the GG version was a cut above anything the Game Boy offered back in the day.

I feel generally abandoned with the Wii. Nothing coming out I want to buy and virtual console ends up costing a fortune. Most of the junk on there you can get the real copy on eBay for the same price or cheaper. All I really want is Oboro Muramasa Youtouden, and I've heard hide nor hair of it in ages.

Do they really call it a "wii-kly update"? I bought the Mario, Mario Kart, and Zelda 64 games on VC. I've yet to see anything else come out for it that I would purchase. Metroid SNES I suppose one of these days. I think I'd pick up an old mega man game though.

Firstly: stop calling SMS Sonic shitty! Okay, I realise you might mean in comparison with those games you were promised (I'm in UK, so already have Megaman) but it's not Sonic's fault.
Secondly, how many VC titles do people own? I reckon I must have quite a lot in comparison since people always go on about never buying anything because it's all so shit (which I find laughable really). If I had to estimate I'd say it was something like 20-30. I never got to play a lot of NES/SNES and even N64 games (which was the first Nintendo console I owned, though not played).
If they ever started releasing GB/GBA classics for the DS with some kind of SD Card reader that number would no doubt go up even more...

The SMS version of Sonic is much better than the Genesis version.
However, Sonic 2 on the SMS is godawful and the Genesis one is excellent.

Since Microsoft can't win the console war, at least now they have a chance to win the "who can release Samurai Shodown II first" war!
Do it Microsoft! Victoly is in your grasp!

"Here's a hint: when the publishers themselves announce a release date, and you go and yank it, it's not a surprise. It's a disappointment."
Ever think that Nintendo didn't "yank it", and there was a problem with a certain aspect, such as the electronic manual provided with it? That's why some of the WiiWare games were delayed in Europe, after all.
It's not always immediately Nintendo's fault, you know. Sometimes it is, sure. But not always.

One, sure. But all three.?
"It's not always immediately Nintendo's fault, you know. Sometimes it is, sure. But not always.
They simply said it was disappointing, but when you come down to it, it's Nintendo's responsibility to get these games out the door.
So, regardless of the excuse or reason, the ensuing disappointment is indeed their fault.
1) For not getting the game out the door.
2) For not communicating in an efficient manner with the third-party developer.

@EmeraldDragon: Why wouldn't it be a magically easy process?
Since we're speculating and all, I speculate that all they have to do is plug a rom into the same Neo Geo emulator they use for all the other Neo VC releases, attach the manual, ????, and then step 4: PROFIT!

Thats right, Ys was damn good enough for a sequel, however 1+2 are very short games and many considewr it to be just one game(also the best in the series) In a time when bleeps and blips accompanied our cartridge rpgs, Ys comes along with ass kicking cd audio soundtrack, and anime cutscenes. The game didnt require you to spend an eternity either, it can be beaten in one LONG day, or 2 comfortably. Some people dont liek it, but hey, i guess Ys does have some bragging rights, Ys 1+2 i believe (please correct me if im wrong) first game given perfect 10s by egm. Which at the time im pretty sure made it also
1.first RPG rated 10 (egm)
2.first disc based game rated 10(egm)
yeah im an Ys fan, hah..............
