Half Of Rare Hard At Work On Secret Googly Eyed Projects
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:00 PM on August 6, 2008
Hang tough, Rare fans. If Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts aren't quite scratching your Rare itch, the developer has more in store. Nick Burton, a senior software engineer at Rare, tells Videogamer that the developer's officially announced titles are being tackled by "about half" of the current staff, hinting that much more is on the way. Dreams of Killer Instinct 3 may be dancing in our heads, but we'll try not to get too excited.
When will we find out? According to Burton, "soon enough". If that means Leipzig Games Convention, we'll be surprised, and expect that we'll hear real details after the release of Rare's already in development Xbox 360 titles.

@theharribokid: I'd like to see how they would pull that off. Retro style like Bionic commando rearmed?

I saw "Rare" and my brain immediately read Googly Eyed as "GoldenEye" and I got all excited.

Conker and Kameo need sequels. KI is best left in our memories.

@P3nnst8r has returned on the Graces of Brian Ashcraft:
Same here I have been wanting another KI game since KI 2. To this day I regret selling my n64 and KI Gold. While I can purchase them all over again at this moment in time it would be more convenient for them to be on the 360. For now I must be patient and wait to see what may be coming ahead in the new future.

I used to be a die hard Rare fanatic. I can't stand anything they've released since the N64 though.

@Grumpz®: Wrong studio. Blizzard developed Rock N' Roll Racing, not Rare. However, I too would love to see an updated version of that title.

A new Killer Instincs and Perfect Dark 2 would be great. Also a new Battle Toads game but for XBLA.

I'd still be most excited about another stab at Perfect Dark. Despite it's problems, I LOVE PDZ. The DarkOps play is great with friends. I love the controls, the rolling instead of jumping, etc.
Also, it was the first game of the generation to have cover, take out bunny hopping, Live co-op, and co-op specific gameplay (that's all the rage now). I really dug the controls, but seeing characters spawn (I've only found a few blatant spawn points, but the x-ray vision kinda makes that stuff hard to hide) and that old-school memorize locations style gameplay has got to go.
Hell, plenty of critically acclaimed games have those same sins. I got really tired of COD4's campaign on Vet after realizing it was a Rainbow Six-esque exercise in memorizing enemy positions, spawns, trigger points, etc.
So yeah, lots of people hated PDZ, but I'd love to see another stab at that franchise. Given the time to polish everything, get it all right, I think it could be amazing.

Considering the fact that Rare did/is develope the whole Avatar system, it could be the first game that uses those googly eyed characters?

Since both Killer Instinct games were produced by Nintendo, I doubt Rare own the rights to the characters. However, if the game is for Wii, I'd be all kinds of excited!
Still, an HD Killer Instinct would look insane!

I want NEW IP's. Rare was a creative force back in the N64 days, introducing all kinds of new IP's. We have Kameo and Viva Pinata this gen, complemented by Banjo and Perfect Dark for milkies. I just imagine they have more original ideas than just trying to do Killer Instinct and Conker again ...

@JustThisGuy: On further research, there actually was a sequel to RRR. It was called Red Asphalt in the States, only gaining the Rock and Roll Racing 2 moniker over on the Continent. It was developed internally by Interplay, and it apparently fell somewhere between fair and middling.

BOO Microsoft from stealing from Rare, I protest this game which should be on all consoles or just on Nintendo Wii. Let RARE become independent instead.
P.S. I know this not the right place to protest, sorry.

Unfortunately all the people that really made them Rare in the N64 days have left. Gone to Zoonami, Free Radical, Sony, or left the industry all together.
We could get another Conker, but all the humour that made the first game great would be gone, replaced by something different. Doesn't mean that it would be better or worse, just different.
Banjo-Kazooie and it's sequel were great, but I hold no hopes for the new game for Xbox 360. Whose trailers and impressions of car building leaves me less then impressed or wanting for what could be platforming gold. Truth be told, someone announcing a new Gex game could excite me just as much.
Now I appreciate they took a big risk with Viva Piñata, and I salute them for that even if it isn't a type of game I want or enjoy or the fact it shows kids about cannibalism (of that it makes everyone else happy and stronger).
Now I would love to see Blast Corps or Jet Force Gemini again, but the truth of the matter is I want this Rare, the Xbox 360 (as it's no longer the N64 Rare I knew and loved), to grow and do more.
A new IP to show off what they can do and bring forth all their talent in something they can call their baby, their master piece, their "Goldeneye" or "Banjo Kazooie".

@GorbyGipper: PDZ still is one of my favorites. It was the first game I fired up on my 360, and I spent many many hours playing it. Funny thing is I don't think I ever started the campaign. Good times, great game I don't care what people say.

I want Perfect Dark, people can say what they want about PD: Zero, but it was not that bad and with the tech that has come out for shooters since then a new PD could be awesome, so that's what I want. Killer Instinct would be cool also, but I want Perfect Dark more. OH and Conker! I want another Conker's Bad Fur Day game badly. Come rare have your greatest line-up ever and announce all 3.

Yeah a new PD couldn't hurt. PDZ's online was pretty awesome, but the single player needs some major help. I loved KI hope that it gets another sequel; however, I would rather see Kameo 2 or XBL Goldeneye. I hate Nintendo for being such a stick-in-the-mud. I am glad MS bought rare and kept great games away from those bastards.

The present RARE team are mediocre. Honestly, who here is seriously excited for any game coming from that development house. My advise is that if you really excited about their games just wait until the games "enter the bargain bin".

Those are not included in the "other half of rare working on something"?

My guess would be that they got a secret decree from MS to develop a LBP clone using Avatars. Would fit into their social gaming thing.
