BioWare Talk (Just A Little) On Further Mass Effect DLC
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:30 PM on August 8, 2008
Don't know about you, but Bring Down the Sky was a little disappointing for this particular saviour of the universe. But never mind. BioWare will be bringing out more Mass Effect DLC, right? Right? Probably. Speaking with MTV, BioWare's Greg Zeschuk said "We're also looking at some other post-release content". When pushed a little further on the topic of DLC, he replied:
We're talking about that. You know how we are. We're always very circumspect until we can go "Aha! There it is!" With everything we build now, we want to have this long-term relationship with the customer and always have something for them to try. So we're definitely looking at that for "Mass Effect."
Wonderful!

I still want to play the original. Unfortunately I'm averse to buggy products released before they're finished (360 version) and excessive DRM (PC version). If they fix one of those problems or release a fresh PS3 version I'll bite.

I have a really hard time getting back into a game after I've completed it.
With the first DLC it worked because I was playing Mass Effect anyway at the time it came out. And it was worth its money, too. But still I don't see myself getting back into the game again for another DLC mission which would have no consequences whatsoever anyway.
They should release this closer after they've announced Mass Effect 2 and tie it in somehow or even better give you a real benefit for the sequel by playing any new DLC.

Didn't even bother with Bring Down the Sky, m'self. Had just finished the game and the idea of starting all the way from the beginning again really didn't do it for me. Pretty sure I'll feel the same about whatever they come up with next, too. As awesome as the game is, it's not very replayable.

"Q: What happens when I've reached the maximum # of computers for my game and I need more, say due to theft of computer, computer crashes, etc?
A: EA customer service is on hand to supply any additional authorizations that are warranted. This will be done on a case-by-case basis by contacting customer support."

You guys do understand that you can get into the new missions in about two hours, and you can have access to a "new game +" with your beefed up hero, right?
Or just reload the game from a save before the last planet.

I've yet to see a game offer single player DLC that impresses me. Mass Effect was ok, but not brilliant. I can't get excited about playing it again for the sake of a few new missions.

I was on their website yesterday to see if there was any news on the DLC front. I just want to know if I can sell my copy or not because that's like 6 months I'm waiting for something worthwhile and I'm starting to think that with the EA deal it's not gonna happen.

@hagridore: Unfortunately that's not all the protection on Mass Effect (SecuROM) does. You obviously find the conditions acceptable, and that's fine, but it doesn't mean they're okay. Personally I don't like games installing hidden services and drivers on my computer (As SecuROM 7.x does). At the very least it's another potential attack vector for hackers to exploit.
At the end of the day EA can do what they want with their product, but there are those of us who will not buy their product if they do.
@hagridore: Sure, but is all of this going to still work five years from now? This situation is similar to Microsoft's Plays For Sure music. Microsoft announced a while back they were killing their key servers. Any music you bought will still play on the computers already authenticated, but once you move to a new computer all the music you paid for is gone. EA may or may not do the same in years to come. Buying games under those conditions is a gamble.

@freakout:
I have to disagree with the "not very replayable" part. I think I've gone through it seven or eight times myself, using different characters/classes to get all the different achievements. Honestly, I think I've gotten more game time out of Mass Effect than any other game I've ever owned.
And as for restarting to play the DLC, as someone else has already said, you can access the DLC from any save before the end of the game.

@notoriousEIC: Exactly the same here, with also easily +100 hours play. Its really confusing for me to see people whine about how buggy Mass Effect is. While never going as far as RROD, my 360 is an incredibly shoddy piece of work, with often times trouble keeping a game running without cutting back to the dashboard. Yet even while playing Mass Effect, none of these problems bugged me.
The only technical issue Mass Effect has EVER given me is frame rate dips when facing lots of rachni at once. Everything else worked pretty much fine.

@notoriousEIC: Having not played it I obviously can't point a finger at anything myself. I'm not just pulling the idea out of thin air though, many of the reviews suggested the 360 version was under cooked and problematic. There were quite a few reports of corrupted save games too.

I hate how Bioware said they would release episodic content to fill in the gap between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. Yet we get crap like Bring Down The Sky. Greeaaatt.
Oh and for anyone wondering, the 360 really doesn't have any problems except for the texture popping. I mean the problems exist but I have 7 playthroughs under my belt and I have never encountered 1. However I have seen other people on the ME forums encounter one or two, nothing serious though. Just things that ruin the immersion of the game when you see a glaring bug really. But again, uncommon.

A little disappointing you say? Thats generous, I would have said it flat out sucked. Perhaps if it cost less, perhaps if it was timed to become free. Had I known what I was getting before I got, I would not have.

@notoriousEIC: My favourite part about the game was the epic storyline - really made me feel like "wow, I'm the awesomest space hero ever!" But it loses that impact the second time around, i think. I'll probably give it another whirl before the sequel comes out, though.

@MattB: There are bugs in the game, but they don't really break the game. At least I never encountered any on my 5 times through game.
The texture loading during cut scenes annoyed me during my first time through because it really took me out of the story.

It's getting to be a little too late for me to care anymore about this DLC. I played ME all the way through a couple of times already, and bought the Bring Down the Sky. The problem is, that was ages ago and I've moved on.
It would be nice if developers could figure out a way to release this kind of content on a regular basis. I was really excited when I was still playing ME and they said that there would be 4 (or however many) DLC packs containing "filler" between ME and ME2.
Also, I'm not that excited for GTA DLC any more. I can't bring my self to play GTA anymore, I've kind of burnt myself out. Any future DLC would have to be something really great and a good value for me to play either of these games again.

@trogam: I have the PC version too, and I've never been able to get the thing up and running for more than about 30 minutes. (From the tech forums, it seems like there's an issue with the 8000 series vid cards???) Anyway, I've tinkered with settings/drivers/INI files/etc. for weeks and have never been able to get the thing running solidly. I was anxiously waiting for the patch that was to come with BDtS, but it doesn't seem to solve any major issues.

Bioware could learn something from Bethesda when it comes to providing new dlc for a rpg.
Oblivion had tons of new dlc, and not just the crappy horse armor either, that extended the life of the game for players like me. I downloaded every piece of dlc for Oblivion over xbl, the only dlc I didn't get was the horse armour and themes/gamer pics.
Bring Down The Sky was a nice little addition, but I want more and I thought Bioware intended to release new Mass Effect dlc on a regular schedule. But it seems they are not going to release anything new for the forseeable future. What a shame.

You know what I think happened? They looked at the feedback from the game and then the feedback from BDtS and decided that they couldn't do anything too much different with continual DLC. We may get one more that serves as a primer of sorts for Mass Effect II (roman numerals ftw), but that's it. There's only so much they can do with the game in its current form.
Besides, MEII is coming next fall ...

I'm not entirely sure if I'll continue to support Mass Effect on console.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the game, despite frustration over the loading times (40 second long elevator ride inside my own ship? wtf!?), pop-in, and inconceivably lacking inventory system.
I passed on the DLC because, like everything else that gets released, is too high for my tastes. If digital sales would actually come down in price one day...
Considering how the DLC is included in the PC port, the controls are clearly superior (imo), loading and pop-in are reduced, and the team control is substantially expanded upon - I'm definitely more interested in that.
The ridiculously overbearing and ineffective DRM strategy, however, blows my mind. There's no way I'll willingly install a rootkit and subject myself to the whim of EA verification servers just to play a game I purchased.

@MattB: The bugs you are speaking of are mostly by people who hated the game and want any reason to drop it down (mainly EA haters). Like a few others have mentioned, dropping a few frame rates is really the only "bug" in the game. Of course there will be random glitches that not everyone experiences, but that is the same for every game. You really owe it to yourself to play this game. At least rent it and give it a try.

I am not going to bother looking it up to link a source, but I could have sworn the said that the Bringin down the sky was not going to be the last downloadable content to be released. Now it's just were thinking about it><. I still have my save though just at the first few hours of insane so I wouldn't mind if they did release some content. I love ME and more is a good thing, but it is really an excellent game without any more DLC.

When Mass Effect 2 is almost done it will be worth it to them to get the voice actors back to make more modules. (For one and two at the same time). They are not cost effective to do one at a time and the last one was left over from the original production schedules. (Cutting room floor.) The actors, particularly Jennifer Hale, Marina Sirtis, and Seth Green are big time expensive people to hire. They won't be able to make new modules until they can afford to do the foley for ME2.
