Madden 09 Gets Favre Focused Roster, Cover Update
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 6:40 AM on August 8, 2008
Former Packers QB Brett Favre has returned to the NFL, announcing his retirement from retirement and throwing a wrench into EA's plans to have him as cover boy for Madden NFL 09. Favre, photographed in his Packers uniform, is now playing for the Jets, leading to a very important, last minute roster change. That change won't, however, affect his appearance on the cover of this year's Madden.
That said, fanatical football fans with a desire for accuracy will be able to download a Jets uniformed Favre next week, according to MTV Multiplayer. It's due to hit EAsports.com sometime next week, just begging to be printed and inserted into a clear plastic sleeve. Ready the inkjets!

Screw him. I live in Wisconsin and this is all I heard about the last month. Just glad to be done with the drama. The Packers made the right choice.

@PapaBear434: He just really needs consistency. That's all. I'm hoping this year my team makes the playoffs... 2 years in a row has been kind of a sting.
Here is to hoping Cutler isn't horrible in Madden's eyes.

When you're a jet, you're a jet all the way...
As a Jets fan, I'm not sure how I feel about this. I really came to like Pennington these past couple of seasons, despite what's gone on. Just cutting him loose like that and bringing in a guy who, while he has the potential to win more games than Kellen Clemens, isn't a long-term solution. After he retires again after this season, then what? Should have either let Clemens play or bring in somebody who's going to be with the team for more than one season.

@iamspoo: That makes no sense at all. Like him or not, Favre would've been a really significant upgrade from Tavaris Jackson.

@KEITH1437:
I don't know if the Chicago fans would have went for that. I mean, on one hand he's been the general of "the enemy" for years and years. On the other, it would give them the excuse to give Grossman his walking papers to second string.
And to clarify: I like Grossman, and think he just needs to shave some rookie nerves off. He either plays like one of the best in the league, or he completely chokes, no middle ground. That tells me he panics and screws it up, not just mediocre talent.
/never expected a football thread on THIS site

Jesus Christ Im tired of all this Farve mumbo jumbo...
O look at him jump into the arms of the linemen..
O look at him throw the ball underhanded...
O look at him throw a snowball at his team mates..
Its like he's a kid again! isnt this great for football??

I feel pretty good about Favre's recent craziness. Why? Because I'm a Bears fan, but never had the hatred I was supposed to have for Green Bay. I had too much respect for Favre, as he was a great athlete and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. And the rest of GB's team seemed likewise. Don't get me wrong, I'd still root for the Bears over them, every time, but I'd put my chips in with Green Bay any other time.
But now, watching Brett's attention whoring, I am free to let my disdain for the legendary QB flow. Good times, good times...

@PapaBear434:
And to clarify: I like Grossman, and think he just needs to shave some rookie nerves off.
Rookie nerves? Hasn't he been playing for four years? Hasn't he been a starter for two years? I think it's time to let that excuse go. :)
He's just too short. Unless he learns to move out of the pocket he will never be successful, and to move out of the pocket he will have to learn how to not fumble the snap and not step on his own feet.
Orton is the way to go, baby. And really, he's not much better, but he did play for my alma mater.
Or hell, give Hester a shot at it. He certainly couldn't do worse. Maybe have a Bears QB fan night where one lucky fan gets to be QB. :P
I kid, I kid. Maybe.
I'm an Indiana transplant so my allegiance is first to the Colts, then to the Bears, but it would be so much easier to like the Bears if they quit making bonehead moves all the time.
At least Orton is starting tonight! (Man, I'm glad football is back!)
(And sorry Bears fans about that crushing first loss of the regular season in the new Lucas Oil Stadium.)
As far as Favre and Green Bay, no worries. They've successfully guaranteed that neither the Jets or the Packers will make the playoffs this year (save for a hail mary wildcard).

I do gotta say that it breaks my heart a little that my child hood hero goes and plays for another team...u see i live in wisconsin like JustJake and i obviously grew up a packer fan and favre was QB since i could comprehend football and its been a bitter last few months and its sucks now cause he is on a team that rivals my 2nd fav team ..the giants so idk what to think anymore...Ted Thompson screwed brett over, he wanted to play in GB but Thompson didnt like that

@wild homes isn't anything!: It's not that I don't like him but I didn't want to see him in a Vikings uniform...ever. I have respect for him and his skills but when you root against a player for 14 years it is difficult to embrace the notion of him playing for your team. I know it may be imature or petty but that is how I feel. I rather have a shitty QB than to sleep with the enemy.
With all the talk this last month of the Vikings and Favre I am ecstatic that he is now a Jet.

@doubtful:
That's kind of my point: His rookie nerves are still with him, even in his Junior year. He needs to shake that off, and he'd be great.
I'm more of a College Football fan than I was an NFL fan anyway. Looking forward to see what the new coach does with my University of Michigan Wolverines this year. And now that Henne is gone (finally), I think they will go with Mallet (good QB and is HUGE.)

@PapaBear434: Yeah I agree with the attention whoring aspect except living in Wisconsin I have been able to see it the past 5 years or so. As one of the newspaper articles said and I quote "He has been playing the retirement card longer then most people's NFL careers"

@iamspoo: That's understandable-- not wanting to root for your long-time enemy. But I might argue a Vikings fan's long-time enemies would actually consist primarily of the coaches and front office of the Minnesota Vikings.

This is a pretty good article on the subject.
I can't help but feel that this is going to be like Emmitt Smith going to the Cardinals.
Still he was amazing last year, but trying to get used to a new team and everything could be difficult. Also I don't believe the Jets have any 'great' WR's.
If I were him I would have gone with the Buccaneers, simply because they have a slightly easier division. I really wouldn't want to have to face the Pats twice this year, or the new and improved (allegedly) Dolphins with Bill Parcells at the helm.
As for Madden... *sigh* ... I am just sick of it in general. Almost as bad as all the Mario Sports games every year.

I am glad he came over AFC East, he needs the thrashing from NE to wake the F up. I used to galvanize over this guy when I was a kid in Korea, now he is some senile man putting unnecessary pressure and stress on two coasts.
If this man can pull Jets out of 4-12 embarrassment of '07, he may get a " I told you so". Anything less and everybody would agree that he should have retired; like Hova aka S. Carter.
