BioWare Pondering Mass Effect DS
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:20 AM on August 9, 2008
If you're going to make the move from PC and console epic RPGs to handheld titles, testing the waters with someone else's property is pretty smart smart way to do it. That's what BioWare is doing with Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, according to the game's lead designer Miles Holmes. The Sonic RPG will launch BioWare's handheld division, which could then explore the possibility of bringing Mass Effect, Jade Empire, and Dragon Age to the handheld.
"We have a lot of big plans for Mass Effect. Having a DS version would be an awesome way to keep interest alive and keep it going in addition to the next one [Mass Effect 2]", said Holmes.
While I myself am partial to their big production numbers, having handheld versions to keep me occupied between their larger efforts is a rather attractive prospect. Plus, the Nintendo DS can only make hot alien sex that much better.

@TearsandScreams:
I agree with a lot of what your saying. I definitely don't think games don't "belong" to a system.
HOwever, An extreme way to illustrate my point would be to imagine if Mass Effect 2 was on the PS3, then Mass Effect 3 was on the 360 again- everyone would hate that.
I realize the handheld games are usually side stories. But I like to get all the depth I can out of IP's that create cool universes.

This is awful. Imagine how great it would look or the amount of openness and extra missions possible /sarcasm.
Make it on PSP if anything so that it keeps the same spirit of the console version. Nice graphics, similar controls and what I believe is a bigger storage capacity than DS.

Then again, that does not say much about the PS3 version.

I just can't imagine being able to fit that crazy-big of a game into a portable and still do it justice. Nothing against the DS - it just doesn't seem easily "portable-ized".
Good example Blizzardjesus! Some games just aren't translatable to the smaller screen...

@Minigote: It's always been that way though, Kingdom Hearts did it, Final Fantasy does it frequently, Metal Gear Solid, Killzone, God of War, Mario, Sonic etc. What if you just own a handheld? Should they not have made sequels to any handheld games on consoles for the same reason? Games don't 'belong' to any system, it's as the developers see fit. We all miss out on games (except the exceedingly rich). Just enjoy what you have.
If their Sonic RPG turs out good, I won't rule this out. I loved the original though, the numerous issues couldn't stand in the way of my total enjoyment. I know this won't be anything like it, but no reason why it can't be good.

I'm pretty sure if they brought Mass Effect to the DS, it would have to be a traditional RPG.
That would mean standard RPG combat, coupled with standard RPG linearity.
Simply put, it would have to remove all the things that make Mass Effect great.
It wouldn't be bad, per se. It would just be another generic game.

This can't be good. Why don't they just think of new great IP's for the DS. That way we don't have to compare and complain over lost features. i.e. The cinematic dialogue we all loved will lose its effect when we are just reading everything.
I don't mind multiplatform releases. But I don't like it when sub-stories are on handhelds, what if I don't own that hand held? I shouldn't miss out on the story.

@MistaJeff:
I was thinking the same thing. You wonder why Bioware would not make a PSP game. Heck they could market it to the people over in Japan and Bioware would make a load of cash. Seeing as the PSP systems are selling really well right now you would think that Bioware would want a piece of the pie. Also how many people will buy Mass Effect for the DS. I like the DS and all but only the childish games sell. So I see no kids picking this up. I would pick this up but I would prefer a PSP version more. I think if Bioware wants to make more DS games they should make new IPs. That way at least it is some thing new. Plus you could cater more for that market too.

Bottom line, its all about the guys making it and what they want to do. The DS absolutely can make a game worthy of Mass Effect on the platform, and hell I am sure it'd be better than the original in a few ways (mostly interface).
Remember complainers, Bioware is wrapping up work on an RPG for the DS. They know what they can do on it.

Tonight, on Fox News: "DSEXXX RAPE, TERRORIST 9/11!?" A new game for the Nintendo DS called Mass Erect lets you digitally rape women and children and small animals and rewards you with points in the game. AND THAT'S JUST LEVEL 1.
We welcome video game rape expert, Cooper Laurence, and liberal commie faggot terrorist fist jabber rape apologist video gamer, Geoff Keighly. Is it true, Geoff, that you like men? Sexually?
"..No.."
That's gay for yes, for our audience out there. Now Cooper, isn't this game mind filth and corruption and didn't Iran make it to convert our childrens to radical Islam?
"Yes, yes, that's all true. It has full frontal digital HD surround sound Blu Ray GT V8 911 orgasmic rape. You can rape anything you see."
Geoff: "Have you even played the game."
Cooper: "No, but even if I had, I would still regurgitate whatever the Fox producers told me to say.. So there."
Time for our fair and balanced round table discussion, on a scale from one to ten, one being you're gay, and 10 being this game is, in fact, a left-wing terrorist, what would you guys rate it?
Random talking head: "It's terrible, this game is an 11. Some people say, and by some people, I mean our producers, that if the game doesn't convert you to a radical islam, or worse, a democrat, it blows up and kills your child. This is fact."
Talking head 2: "I've actually played this game and within minutes, I was raping everything I saw. IN REAL LIFE. Power of suggestion here, folks."
There you have it folks, our experts have weighed in. Next on Fox News, is Obama, Satan himself? New polls suggest yes, yes he is.

I just picked up Mass Effect this past weekend ($30 used). It's probably the first RPG in a while that I'll actually finish. The last attempt was last year with FF XII, and I didn't make it very far.
The voice acting is absolutely top notch, which helps me care a about the plot much more than normal. It's funny that it's making a bit of news the week I started playing it. Maybe they'll start talking more about the sequel soon.... As it is, Mass Effect is getting me pumped to play Fallout 3.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I really prefer not having voice acting in games. I read much faster than they speak, I prefer my own voices in my head to their cast. Putting a text heavy game onto the DS is fine by me.
Actually its a lot better than fine, its something I'm eager for. I have probably put more hours in on my DS than on my consoles. (If we discount music, the amount that total shifts drastically to the DS is ridiculous). I really trust Bioware to develop an interesting way to tell a story on the handheld.
