Cryptic Exec: What's In/Not In Star Trek Online
Posted by Owen Good at 6:00 AM on August 10, 2008
Cryptic flacked its upcoming gameplay debut (and webcast) to the Associated Press, and the wire was a taker. Yesterday, the AP moved an interview with Jack Emmert, Cryptic's chief creative officer, and he gives gamers an idea of what to expect, what not to expect, and a little of how the deal went down when they acquired the title from Perpetual Entertainment.
Or, well, the licence, because there is nothing developed by Perpetual that's going into the game. "We took no assets", Emmert said. "There was nothing to be had, to be honest. We're building everything from the ground up".
Emmert also assures us Sunday will be a bonafide gameplay reveal. "You're going to see the actual game working and functioning", said Emmert. "This isn't renders. This isn't concept art. Everything that people will see on Sunday is going to be taken right from 'Star Trek Online' as it stands today, so hardened people should know that a release date might be closer than they think".
If you don't want to read the whole thing, here are the high points:
• The game will be set a few generations following the last Star Trek film, so no Kirk, Picard or other familiar faces in the game.
• "There might be a ship called Enterprise flying around, but it's probably not the same ship anymore," Emmert said. Worlds and galactic locations familiar to fans will also be in the game.
• Characters can be created from existing Star Trek races, or new alien species can be invented altogether.
• "There's going to be tons of space to investigate," says Emmert "We have a great system for exploration, which will allow for almost infinite possibilities."

I'd like to see time travel between the different eras. I'd call the 24th century my home though.

"new alien species can be invented altogether"
Although my head knows this means Cryptic's lovely character generation suite will be brought to bear, my heart longs for this to mean we could use the SPORE Creature Creator and import those...

OOhhh..I'm excited.
We'll be able to stand around in a cheesy, poorly furnished main deck area as we scream out catchphrases and assume an epic battle is going on outside that we can't really see or care about.
Of course, we'll only be allowed to do that for five minutes for every hour we play.

Damn, I hope this game comes out soon. I'm not really a fan of typical MMO games, and I'm hoping this one will break the mold. Perpetual's concept of having huge ships and crews sounded very interesting, and I hope they keep that portion.

Even though they say it is in the future of Star Trek, don't forget Star Trek is famous for its time travel storylines so don't count out the possibility of meeting the crew of past Enterprises and other ships less famous like Voyager and DS9. I for one am excited for the possibilities in this game, lets just hope Cryptic is up to it.

Okay, so they started from scratch, fine, thing is, they only started working on this at most 8 months ago.
8 months and they are talkng about showing off production assets and release dates being closer than we think?
8 months?
Yeah, it takes fricking years to build a decent MMO.
If they are implying that they are going to be shipping a finished product before 2010/2011, then I'm implying that that product will be utter crud.
At best an existing MMO re-skinned at worst a point an click adventure where only the point part actually works.
They're probably using that Middleware MMO creator where you fill in 20 drop down boxes and then hit the "MAKE MMO GO NOW!" button.
So what's the etiquette on how far in advance you can write off a new MMO?
I've traditionally waited until at least the beta, but I'm willing to make an exception.
On the upside, they've apparently got Leonard Nimoy at the presentation, which will add gravitas and "cred" to the proceedings while they kill the license.

@joncoffee: It's the future...they might be Borg hypercubes...
Actually, I'm glad to hear this is in the future, I found it extremely disconcerting in Galaxies (at least the second incarnation) where supposedly everybody was a close personal friend of Han Solo, and had been on an adventure with him. I'd rather it be completely uncharted territory, because, as I recall, going there is the whole point of the series.

Uhm.... YES? I love City of Heroes, still play it. There's something about the design and the system that keeps me coming back. I have been waiting for a Star Trek MMO since before SW Galaxies came out. There are going to be some HARDCORE RP servers in this game. And I will be on them. Because I am a Trekkie. BEAM ME UP! (my true cheese factor comes out only around star trek)

@Stratovarius: a few generations after Kirk would be Picard if we're going by the rule of thumb "~30 years per generation", but look closer: Owen reports that it's going to be several generations after the last film, which was Star Trek X and starred the cast of The Next Generation (i.e. Picard's crew).
Given that Deep Space Nine and Voyager were consynchronous with The Next Generation and Enterprise was (primarily) a prequel, what they're telling us is that living, non-Holodeck cameos are going to be few and far between.
Thanks for drawing my attention to this. I myself originally misread what Owen wrote, reading it as "several centuries" after the last film. I was pretty pissed off since Star Trek tech advances so rapidly from century to century that anything set too far in the future ought not be even recognizable. But I can deal with several generations, i.e. 100 years tops.

unless this game features overweight dudes with klingon ear impants (the documentary of trekkies covered this) and horrible dress up, this game is not accurate to the majority of its fans. but, it is only a natural step for basement dwelling trekkies to play a mmo based on star trek, so w/e.

Excited about the new interest in Trek properties. Would be nice if the movie and MMO spawn enough interest to stir up a new series - the first decent one in some time.
Tomorrow should be interesting - very interested about how they're going to MMO-ize Star Trek. Could be your typically generic MMO that feels incredibly typical and generic... or it could be something interesting.
Well, guess we'll see tomorrow! And I guess this is one game you'll never have to wonder, 'Well, what race is even left to add?...' several expansions down the line.

I'll probably only ever have time to invest in one MMO, with this, Stargate and Jumpgate all sounding promising to me, I'll have a tough decision to make.
I'm quite pleased about the 'future' setting (although Star Trek is already set in the future... :p ). It's really the only direction to go in to avoid pissing off any fans with continuity issues.

I'm concerned that this game won't live up to the hype I have built-up in my mind. =(
Still, I am really looking forward to their attempt at creating the Star Trek universe.
If only they could capture something as cool as STNG: A Final Unity. I loved that game when it came out way back and thought it was a nice interpretation of Trek.

Cryptic is a confusing name, because I thought the headline meant that the exec was being vague. Which, he kind of is. So I guess that fits both ways.
Anyway - at the mention of "There might be a ship called Enterprise flying around, but it's probably not the same ship anymore," I wonder who's gonna try to mob and shoot it up?
Anyone remember the thrill of harassing Captain Hector in Escape Velocity?

Well I wonder how this game will work?
Ships in Star Trek took a large crew to operate so are they gonna have players manning the different stations?
If thats the case then guilds will be mandatory.Pick up groups would be awful. I can see it now the pilot crashing the ship in everything in sight and the weapons guy shooting everything whilst yelling PROTON TORPEDOS while the guy operating the sensors is screaming BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!
Meanwhile the science guy is coming up with logical conclusions for his crews stupid behavior and the medical officer is yelling DAMN IT JIM I"M A HEALER NOT A DPSER!
Come to think of it that sounds fun, I might play a game like that.
I am curious to see this reveal, I think Star Trek's large universe would suit an MMO so lets hope Cryptic does a good job of it.

@MartinX: Obviously, You not very familiar with Cryptic Studios. Most MMO's do design everything from the ground up, and that's why Cryptic thinks they can do it in such a short time. They don't have to do that. They've been iterating on the Cryptic engine for some time now. They originally used it for the COx franchises, began using it for Marvel Online and are now using it for Champions Online(and probably this one). So they are not using any cheesy MMO creator, but they already have a lot of work behind the scenes done.
And Cryptic sometimes jumps the gun on when they think they may be finished; City of Heroes was "delayed" over a year from it's expected ship date (there was never official date set; but they had a window until they decided to completely redesign the Character system). But you can look at Marvel online. It got cancelled sometime last year and Cryptic has already anounced that Champions Online will be out spring of 09. That's some pretty fast turn around on an MMO.
Of cource you can just call me a Cryptic fanboy and be done with.
