Here's Your Red Alert 3 Collectors Edition
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on August 11, 2008
Never ones to shy away from a chance to earn an extra buck or two, EA have announced they'll be releasing a "Premier Edition" of upcoming RTS Red Alert 3. Exclusive (at least in Europe) to GAME, the premium box will see the game packed in a metal tin, along with five exclusive MP/skirmish maps, a DVD with a making-of featurette (along with the sure-to-be-tasteful special "Women of Red Alert 3"), a soundtrack and, curiously, an "Exclusive Beta Key to a future C&C game!" Exclamation is theirs, not ours. The only C&C game we can think of on the horizon is Tiberium, but with that not due for a while, be sure to keep that beta key somewhere you won't forget about it.
Command and Conquer Red Alert 3: Premium Edition - GAME Exclusive! [GAME, thanks Ben!]

most people suck in the mutliplayer beta and the AutoMatch system still has some kinks to be worked out

@Luke Plunkett:
Someone on the 1Up Show hinted that Tiberium may have quietly been canceled. Do you know anything about the validity of that?
Also, is this special edition PC-only or will the 360 version receive the same treatment?

Hopefully there'll be a bonus DVD with lots of footage of Gemma Atkinson in that uniform.
And Gemma Aktinson out of that uniform...

A "Women of Red Alert 3" special? But Gemma Atkinson is in it right? Someone needs to put UK: Resistance on standby notice...

"A C&C Red Alert 3-exclusive item for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (also available with the standard edition of C&C Red Alert 3)."
Hmmm wonder what the item is.

I always used to buy collector's editions back in the day, when it was the rare exception, usually from the small but brilliant companies like Working Designs. Now that every goddamn game that comes down the pike is loaded with $3 worth of extra horseshit for $10-20, I don't even bother.

@kitsuneconundrum: Because of these "things" that happen in the real world, EA chose to include a terrorist faction in C&C: Generals. The idea "came" to them after 9/11, and they went on and fully replaced the unique African nations faction with a terrorist cell.
I think it's better to think separate of things in the real world and the made up world of videogames.

"...five exclusive MP/skirmish maps..."
There's sure to be some complaints about these. Separating the normal/premium playerbase sounds like a risky proposition.

@SmilingPolitely:
I think he is refering to the current conflict between Russia and Georgia.
The Georgians have essentially surrendered (called ceasefire) but the Russians keep kicking the shit out of them. Now USA have stated that Russia's aggressive actions will not go unanswered.
Getting messy quickly.
More to the point why is everyone choosing this pop art look for their games?

@SmilingPolitely: I assume that the current Georgian / Russian conflict is being referred to here. To be honest if a Georgian and a Russian can hug on an Olympic podium I think EA can release a game about a fictional conflict involving Russia. Entertainment and politics should be kept as separate as possible.

My hope is that the beta key pertains to anything that isn't an RTS title.
EA needs to offer full support to Red Alert 3 after its release, to ensure that it matures smoothly and successfully into a balanced and competetive multiplayer experience.
If they jump ship and start working on Generals 2, or BFME3, RA3 will decay just as so many other EA RTS titles have.

@Dappa: "More to the point why is everyone choosing this pop art look for their games? "
Well, in this case, it's actually emulating Soviet-era propaganda art, so it seems pretty appropriate.
As far as I'm aware, though, that art style is just used for packaging and marketing stuff, and the game itself looks pretty much like what you'd expect from a Command and Conquer game.

Does GAME even have stores outside the UK? Their online shop at least doesn't ship anywhere but to the UK.
So it's not really a "European" special edition but a UK-only one (as has been the case many times in the past); would be nice if companies used retailers that actually sell to more than one European country for their "exclusive special editions".

@EmpressInYellow:
"pretty much like what you'd expect from a Command and Conquer game."
A bit of a simplification?
Both the Red Alert and Tiberium universes have different looks, with the latter being a lot grittier and the former taking a more cartoonish approach.

Okay, CE's are fine for regular stuff, but I don't think they should include extra maps.
Also, boo Game. They've got the shittiest trade-in values, they're worse than Gamestop over in the States.

@kitsuneconundrum: Oh cry a fucking river.
Call of Duty 4 was loosely based on current events. That has the Middle East AND Russia. It was so tasteless that it became Game of the Year, right?
This game is so damn farfetched from reality that it's not stepping on any toes. Except yours. Which I hope it continues to do so for our entertainment.

CC soundtracks alone have been worth the extra cost so far... I would rather have a cool tshirt than the other stuff doh. Making of and woman of CC is what you already have seen enough of on gametrailers etc sites.

My thing is why pay some extra dough for some maps that they will more then likely release for free after a few months? They did the same thing when C&C 3 came out offered some crappy little things in the CE version like maps and then released them for free later on.

I might get this game for the single player, but I am not liking multi. Every match I've played in the beta has a been a Zerg rush. You literally just get started and then "Enemy Unit Spottted!" and you are drowned in bears/dogs. Then the other units come in a steady line.
Fuck that. I want real strategy.

COLLECTOR'S Edition... if you look back at gaming history, these editions only rise in value after 5-10 years. Plus if you're a big fan, you'll want it.

Anything thats called a collectors edition does not rise in value and it is not really a collectors edition. Why would something rise in value when its not rare? Its like the Halo 3 collectors edition. Yeah im sure thatll rise in value even though there are millions of copies out there.
Anyway this kinda sucks. I think ill have to buy it if it has 5 extra maps...

RTS' are my achilles heel. I usually suck bad at them but i dont have that problem with any other genre. So i wasnt really looking forward to this but after learning that its a less serious approach it sounds kinda cool. Might give it a try. I take it the previous games dont require playing?
