Cryptic Reveals More Trek Online Details Via FAQ
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 8:20 AM on August 13, 2008
Clearly, when Star Trek Online was announced, it was going to be a tough sell to the really die-hard fans.
No matter how accurately those Type II phasers were modelled, someone was always going to point out that the comms badges were slightly out of proportion or that the Bolians' skin is more of a duck-egg blue rather than the tourquoise the idiot developers went for.
To try and clear up some of the fans questions on issues as diverse as Pricing, PvP and Travel Times, Cryptic has released a comprehensive FAQ for the game.
Hit the jump for a selection of Q's that have been A'd F.
Will a monthly fee be required to play?
We haven't decided on pricing plans yet.What races will we be able to play?
The plan is Human, Vulcan, Andorian, Klingon, Orion, Gorn, and several others. You will also be able to create your own race with its own custom look and attributes.Will everyone be the Captain of their own ship?
Yes, but you will have to earn the responsibility and skill to command larger and more powerful vessels. Remember, in Star Trek as well as naval tradition, whoever commands the ship is the "Captain", even if it is not your current rank.Will console and PC players be on the same servers?
We would like that to be the case. There is nothing technologically keeping us from making it so.Will there be PvP, PvE and RP rule set servers?
There will not be separate servers. Open PvP will be restricted to designated sectors of space (far-off reaches of unclaimed territory). Consensual PvP and competitive PvE will occur between the realm borders (the Neutral Zone), where players will be competing over territory and resources with the option to PvP.Will there be realistic travel times in space?
Travel times will be semi-realistic, with a focus on fun. Space is big, and it can take a very long time to travel great distances. That travel time can be impractically long. We will introduce transwarp conduit technology and worm holes to allow players to travel to distant sectors of the galaxy without needing days or weeks of gameplay to do so.

Dammit, there is also nothing technologically stopping you from making multi-man ships! It'd would be sweet to have groups rocking out on missions while crewing a Sovereign or Galaxy class or such.

So, how does this game work? Are you basically your vessel? Is it all about space combat? Do you have a crew? Are there away missions? Dungeon crawls? When I team, can we all take one vessel? Or are we a fleet?
And wtf Gorn? What about bejorans or trills? or ferengi? Or is this all Original Series canon (which I barely know)?

I like the idea of being able to be captain of your own ship. I just hope there's more rooms on the ship than just the bridge and that you can have a team of friends to crew your ship and man the various stations.

I still like my Star Trek game idea better, but this could be decent.
Then again, I thought the same about SW Galaxies and Matrix Online, until I came to see that they were indeed extremely average and maybe MMO's just aren't for me.

@DaveKap:
Not good enough. My main complaint with all MMOs is the inability to instantly travel anywhere ala Fast Travel from Oblivion.
Why in gods name would you want to have instantaneous travel to anywhere as a feature in a combat/exploration/economy-based MMO? It would absolutely destroy the gameplay. Sounds more like a problem with untreated ADD than an issue with games.

@SpasticSloth:
This was done in TrekMUSE waayyy back in the day. While it does work, it requires you to have the requisite number of people with the requisite type/level of skills to even get the ship out of spacedock.
The more I read about this MMO, the more I think they've been creating an EVE competitor in secret and are now adapting that to the Trek franchise.
(Okay, well, back in TrekMUSE if you were industrious enough you set up a set of macros that allowed you to pilot a ship on your own).

Not good enough. My main complaint with all MMOs is the inability to instantly travel anywhere ala Fast Travel from Oblivion. I want to be able to go to distant sectors without needing minutes, let alone hours, weeks, and days. This, of course, assumes that I've already traveled to the target location (again, like Oblivion).
Please make this a game I want to play and not another "wait 10 minutes to go where you want to go" MMO.

@DARTH_TIGRIS: Big difference. SWG was made by SOE, who makes some of the most shoddy MMOs on the market. Matrix was made by Monolith, who doesn't do MMOs. Cryptic makes MMOs. And while there is debate about how good CoH is (Depth being the big problem), it is definitely a high quality game.

Yes. "
Did they really have to point that out? I could imagine that this came from some horrible focus testing or a Q&A Con Panel gone wrong.
Developer One: Okay, we need to stress that this MMO is extremely immersive, featuring thousands of players at the same time in massive battles...yes?

You'll see that most of the questions you are asking are answered.
@arstal: Yes you can.
@blackpanther25: Not exactly since you actually get to choose to divert power from engine to shields and vice versa and make tactical decisions other than flying in a radius larger than your opponents range in order for you to pick him off with you long range large hybrid turrets.
@RockstarLlama:
In one of the other interviews he did say all the races will be available but not at the start. You'll be able to choose between Klingon and Federation. Also answering the question of if you could try blowing up the federation and yes you can do that if you are Klingon.

"No, that won't work."
"I can't change the laws of physics."

"Actually, just kidding. I can't do that."

I would have preferred clan/team/friend based ship control. Everyone controlling their own ship sounds too lonely and boring for an MMO. ST games should be more about team work than individual superiority.

I still think it would be better to allow teams of players to all work together on the same ship.
Even if it's one players ship & he's the captain, if the other players (also captains) could help out on that ship to accomplish more than what that one player could by himself then it would be real multiplayer.
Only having that option on the ground means 1/2 the game is missing imo.

Hmm, no Romulans *or* Cardassians though. Maybe they're planning something with those races and they don't want players messing it up? Or, they *do* say 'and several others'.
They probably are never going to add the Ferengi, though. Only people who would play them are griefers.

As long as I can make my own Android class, I'm happy. (Might settle for Vulcan, though.)
I'm not all that keen on being your own Captain. I was hoping that they mask the guild system as a ship with it's crew members. NPC crew mates can be around when there's no one in the guild available at the moment.
