First Viva Piñata Vision Card Revealed
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 9:20 AM on August 13, 2008
Rare has released the first official Viva Piñata Vision Card for use in Viva Piñata: Trouble In Paradise.
As we covered back in May, Viva Piñata: Trouble In Paradise for the Xbox 360 can be used with the Xbox Live Vision Camera and a selection of special cards. Players can wave the cards in front of the camera to invoke certain game effects.
Players will be able to download free cards, which can then be printed out — or just displayed on a PDA or mobile phone screen held in front of the camera. Players can also create their own cards for online trading.
It looks like it will work a bit like the PS3 game Eye Of Judgement although Rare say that the game will be fully playable without the card/camera combo.
"The Vision Camera just adds a new dimension to Piñata and how you can interact with the game. Vision cards are really versatile, by showing one of the cards to the Vision Camera you can affect the weather, the time, garden items, piñatas, you can do just about anything" - Ryan Stevenson, Rare

@LSSJ: Ryan looks like he could turn the game into a Kubrick esque Clockwork Orange with Piñatas in it!
All the animals could start beating the shit out of each other to the William Tell Overture!
Could be a win now I think about it.

@Wahrheit:
I don't think anyone honestly believed that anyone but kids will want this.
Trouble in paradise was made for KIDS. They improved on viva pinata, added some new stuff, made it more tied in with the cartoon, and put in 2 player co op.

This is Microsoft coming up with a knock out idea that will have the casual gaming gang flocking to the Xbox this christmas.... NEXT!
Give it up xbox!
Don't forget your biggest crowd of gamers are the hardcore type. Not casual.
One in the hnd is worth two in the bush!
Don't go alienating your core demographic by chasing the nintendo crowd!
You will just end up pissing everyone else off.
Nintendo love the fact that the cater for the non core crowd, and it is obvious from this years E3.
Sony have openly said that they don't want to go chasing after the casual market.
Microsoft are just spreading themselves out thin now.
They have seen nintendo do what they did, and now they want a piece of the pie!
Fans of the 360 already have one. They will be wanting games like Fable 2 and GOW2 this christmas.
Not some crummy game where you show cards to animals made out of sweets and brightly coloured paper!
We want to blow peoples heade off on Call of Duty 5.
this game will probably sell as well as the flop that was party animal!

So like, they want to sell a crapload of cards and cash in on the whole collectible/card game market. I can understand that, but boy, that WILL be an irritating system and obvious as heck that it's made to milk some cash out of children. Free cards? Bull, there will be cards for sale, mark my words.
Viva Pinata was a family game. I sure as hell can't imagine anyone but the youngest of fans being enthusiastic about this. I will NOT wave 30+ cards in front of my tv. Would You?

I really want this game. It's weird, my girlfriend (who doesnt play games really) plays this game hardcore, while I play this game casually. I think it's supposed to be the opposite way around. I wish they actually released packs of the cards, an official printing of them...

@QualityJeverage: I fell foul of that I guess, but we will have to wait and see how it turns out. You got to admit though. it does seem like microsoft are jumping in at the deep end of this casual gaming thing.
People often think that creating a game that appeals to casual gamers would be an easy thing to master compared to creating hard core games.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
I think Nintendo got lucky this time with some amazing gambles that paid off.
Any companies trying to emulate that are heading for trouble.

@QualityJeverage: Well, it's not original if it's been done already. Nothing wrong with using a winning formula. I'm of the type that doesn't feel it necessary to scream for innovation, as long as the game does what it's trying to do right.

If a game comes out with something new, people like it because it's innovative, but that praise is always accompanied by the more cautious mantra "This will be cool when we start seeing it in other games."
But then when other games do start using it, they're criticized for not being innovative and using another game's ideas.
Anybody else see the problem here? We don't accept innovation unless it becomes a standard, but when it does, we accuse the games of being unoriginal.

Casual game, my backside! Kids game? I love this game, and I'm NOT a casual gamer or a child. I also love GoW, CoD4, and the DMC franchise.
Wake up, haters! There are other preferences besides your own. I personally will not care in the slightest if you don't buy this game.

I'll give up innovation for solid gameplay ANY day. While innovation is key in this industry, so is consistency.
I'm not trying to say that this game will be great, or even good (Since nobody has played it yet). I'm just saying it shouldn't be written off just because it uses some ideas from other games.
BTW... Viva Pinata was pretty innovative in many gameplay aspects, but nobody recognizes that. They just see what ISN'T innovative.

Old news is old (this was actually released last week).
But I can't wait for VP2. When they finally got around to releasing a demo for the 1st, I played it for 4 hours straight before ordering a full copy.
It is hands-down the most relaxing game I've ever played.

@CCCombobreaker:
What I was trying to point out is that it will turn from family game into kiddy game (maybe not completely, but the transition is still there), just as you agree with me.
The point is that I don't think it is a wise move at all. On the other hand, if the card sales do cover the losses from older audiences, ie if the game and card feature becomes a smash hit, then I guess I was wrong. I wouldn't bet my money on that though, which is why I'm negative about this. Then again, kids do strange things.

edit. i am sure there will be card packs for sale, just like baseball cards, but you dont have to purchase them. you will be able to get the cards off the computer, or a tatoo per-say. just think of them like a stocking stuffer from santa on christmas, for your younger siblings, or family members.

this is truly a great new feature. im 20, and i bought the original vp for when my younger cousins come down, but little did i know, that same time i bought the game, they got a 360 and 5 games for x-mas. so i was stuck there, and im the person that if i buy a game, i am going to play it.
the original vp was made for the kids, but really it was a deep game that would be hard for them to comprehend what the game experience was about.
i like creating my own stuff (sims, tycoon, etc...) and this game was right up my alley.
now, back to this card feature, in the older game the only way you could transfer a pinata to someone else was by shipping it to them. it was like a mail service through the game and xbox live. (gold and silver could use it) but, by doing so you would loose your pinata. by having this card feature you can make a card, give it to your cousins or someone, and you can both enjoy having a 4-headed snake roaming around your garden.
to me i get a feeling that im god like, and i can mutate a pinata species just because i want too.
btw....the game now supports up to 4 players over live and local. sweet.

It only adds to the game, thers no point in calling it the Eye of Judgement since its not actually required to play the game, and is free to get the cards anyway.
Just a nifty feature if you ask me.
Screw the complainers, fanboy pricks.

I will only be satisfied if it works WITH The Eye of Judgment, for my army of candy filled donkeys will be able to topple Biolith fiends by sacrificing each other to breed the Cabalist P1-ÑATA Burro to dominate the board.

Neat idea. Pity there aren't more developers making use of the 360 or PS3's cameras. The first Viva Pinata was a fun little game, probably one of the few truly original games on the 360.

@Wahrheit: You're still completely missing the point. There won't be any card sales. They're not trying to sell them.
That's why they're not bragging about how awesome their security is like EoJ had to do: you're allowed to scan them and share them online. You're supposed to. that's how they work.

It's a good sign when the general concensus is that this is a failure of an idea. Why? 'Cause the devs probably thought of that idea months before you got to make an opinion about it, and probably have good reason to bet that it'll fly.
Then again, it seems like half the people bitching missed the whole line about the cards being free, and are regretting the fact that it's going to be the next Pokemon trading card game.

@GOD: Comments like that get you "Star Commenter". It's obvious you haven't played the game. I don't know if I'm "hardcore" enough for this crowd. I play a few hours every day, on the weekends it's not abnormal for me to still be on at 3:00am. I own all three systems (2x 360s actually, though don't have any PS3 games yet - using it for BluRay). I play Rock Band, COD4, Bioshock, and even Viva Pinata. It's one of the first games I bought for my 360, and it's a lot of fun. Microsoft is a BUSINESS and as such, they will go after EVERYONE that has disposible income. Not only that, as you can see by the line-up of 360 games already, it's ok for a few "casual" games to come out, they aren't going to hurt the sales of all of your shooters.
