Actiblizzard Ditches Scarface 2
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 10:20 AM on August 14, 2008
Activision-Blizzard seems to have forgotten all about another Sierra game.
After throwing out 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, The Bourne franchise and Brutal Legend, the company has seemingly let the sequel to Scarface: The World is Yours slip down the back of the development sofa as well.
It isn't a huge loss, it has to be said — there isn't exactly a shortage of a gangster-themed games around at the moment — but it still seems a shame that we haven't yet seen a version of Tony Montana on the latest console hardware. Chainsaws may be old hat, but I'll bet the PS3 could really render the living heck out of a line of blow.
There is still some hope — Ghostbusters managed to slime its way back in, after all.

Hope you enjoyed those vowels, my good man. I won't even bother explaining the comment to you since you won't be around long enough to reply to it.
Also, "slip down the back of the development sofa" has to be Phrase of the Year.

@stuminus3: No need to insult anyone over it. That last line was simply unneeded and pointless.

"There is still some hope - Ghostbusters managed to slime its way back in, after all."
Unlike Scarface 2, the Ghostbusters titles were in development at studios that were not owned by Activision; Scarface 2 was being developed by Radical, who developed the first game.

Wii is not only a current gen system, it's also home to a very excellent port of the original Scarface game.
So... wrong again, stupid Kotaku motherfuckers.

As for Scarface 2 - meh, BUT would have been a far more interesting if it was a prequel to Scarface the film (like the comics)

Frankly I am disgusted with everybody who have been crying for Brutal Legend & Ghostbusters, that nobody have spoke out against the injustice of 50 cent - Blood in the Sand not being released.
The first title was seminal and was clearly a sign that games should no longer labelled as mere "entertainment" but finally, as they deserve, "Art."
Or they saw that the 1st was a pile of shite, tried not to wet themselves laughing that a sequel was being made. Then thankful put it out of its misery by booting out of their portfolio when they took over.

So would this be an actual downsizing of the studios, or just a restructuring of talent to more profitable IPs?

Doesn't matter - the only talent that worked on Scarface is now working on a more promising title. But don't ask me which one because I can't remember right now (it's late and I'm exhausted). Believe :)

@LittleBigPlaneteer: Hah!
Well the first game was actually not that bad, but you'd be hard pressed to find many people over the age of 15 or that bought it on the basis that they had just seen the film and thought it was a life changing experience.

I will throw rocks at EA if they save that one after they killed so many good games...

The other 50 Cent game got canceled? I didn't even know that. It seemed to be getting surprisingly positive impressions before it got axed. I'm also surprised that Scarface 2 is getting the axe as well. The first game wasn't exactly a blockbuster hit, but it got decent enough reviews.

@ZetaCrossfire: Cuz they dropped Scarface? granted the game sold decently. but with mafia 2, godfather 2, and gta 4 plus DLC, and i'm sure there are more i havent even thought of that have release dates some time soon...why would they keep this around? boom...outta here. let's see some new IP's!!

Not a huge loss, if the next Mafia bit the dust; it would be a bit disheartening.
@ZetaCrossfire: You mean the anti-EA. They would have done the exact opposite and pushed those titles anyways, targeting the same demography that made fiddy's game popular.

i love scarface i wish they'd actually put the time into making it a sweet game and not just try and milk the name. Scarface has alot of potential at least in my eyes to be a great game if they put a good team behind it.

@Mr.Monkey: Sounds like he's a great promoter. If he promises to write songs about all the products he endorses, I will pray nightly that someone should pitch him a line of edible dildos. Because the resulting LP of chocolate penis raps would be absolutely lights-out, I am very certain.

Blood On The Sand is not dead yet. Fiddy's hardcore-- Activision's going to have to cancel that motherfucker TEN TIMES, because Fiddy is like fucking Rasputin-- you can't keep him down. You also can't make him GOOD, but whatever.

Scarface wasn't bad for the Xbox... too bad it came out right when I snagged a 360 for my brother and myself, and Gears of War just seemed more intriguing.
Humorous, juvenile GTA clone. The drug dealing minigames became monotonous in a hurry, and the entire premise that Tony survived the end of the movie required a massive suspension of disbelief, which basically undermined the entire theme of the film in the first place, but I digress.
With GTA already out, SR2 coming down the road (and destined to be lost in the shuffle whenever it arrives), Scarface 2 was a pretty dumb idea.

Not really, all that was said was "Its being published" He didn't say by who or when, and damn, Activision just likes killing games, they really are the new EA.

I really liked the first Scarface game. It was enjoyable, if not a bit repetitive. The game was made right. It made it fun to let you be Tony Montana, which is definitely what it should've done. It's too bad this got cancelled. I could see it going way beyond the first one, as they'd know what needed to be changed and improved.

Scarface sold well. Someone will pick that game up.
Posted 10:37 PM 14/8/08
@Ashkihyena: That's what I thought. I went back through the Kotaku stories to see if it had been reported that Activision picked Ghostbusters back up and didn't see anything. So GB hasn't exactly "slimed" its way back anywhere (what the hell does that even mean?!). I think it's safe to say less commentary with stories is best if the editors are going to drop stupid misleading comments like that.
