Activision Boss Goes Toe-To-Toe With Record Label

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:20 PM on August 15, 2008

So Warner bros. think they deserve a bigger cut of Guitar Hero profits, do they? Over Bobby Kotick's dead body. The Activision boss has hit back at the music label's claims, telling them to not only pull their head in, but to cover their arses at the same time:

I think his view was ... that [Warner Music] should be compensated the way they might for a performance on iTunes. But this is an entirely different business that is very technically complex. We're going to favour those publishers that recognise and appreciate how much we can add value to their artists.

Lump it or leave it? Them's fighting words. Think Bobby's worried? No way. Bobby don't worry.

LittleBigPlanet, So Electric, So Gassy

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on August 15, 2008

Yes, we know that LittleBigPlanet will let players slight stuff on fire and BURN THINGS. But that's just fire. What about other elements? Or the weather? According to Media Molecule's Mark Healey:

You can set fire to pretty much anything, you can also make things 'electrified', or turn them to gas, which is very cool... By water, I assume you mean 'real water' that acts like real water does! This isn't in the initial release, but we have some cool ideas for how to integrate it into a possible future DLC — of course, it will have a slight LBP twist to it... There is fog that you can tweak, and you could pretty easily fake a thunderstorm with the right sound effect objects and some 'emitted' rain drops or something.

Electrified? Gas? Possible water DLC? Tweakable fog?! Fake thunderstorms?! Woah.

You got it. A set of Cammy dog tags? You got it. A Leon Kennedy boiler plate? You can...probably get it. No word on pricing for this stuff, but since it's custom-made, you may as well brace yourself for "expensive".

Make Your Xbox 360 BIGGER

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:00 PM on August 15, 2008

Lian-Li Industrial, an "executive upper-class aluminium PC chassis manufacturer", has whipped a proper PC-like casing for the much slimmer Xbox 360 console. The maker claims it reduces heating and noise issues. There's a 1500rpm rear fan to quietly draw heat from the Xbox 360's innards. It's also bigger: The Xbox 360 Arcade measures 295 x 100 x 80mm, compared to Lian-Li's case 415 x 250 x 160mm. The best part? Lian-Li says some "DIY knowledge for the transfer of components".

Or, if that's a little drastic, you could always give them a new coat of paint. Or you could overboard and cover the entire side of the building in a LittleBigPlanet motif ahead of the Leipzig Games Conference, which kicks off next week. Up to you.

How Pro Evo 2009 Differs From Pro Evo 2008

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on August 15, 2008

I was bitterly disappointed with Pro Evo 2008. Like Konami had dropped off a basket full of soccer-ball-shaped lemons, and I'd eaten every last one. And I wasn't the only one; the game sold well enough, but there was a general feeling that Konami hadn't taken advantage of the next generation of hardware like they could/should have. Heck, they even made some parts of the game worse, crippling the team edit suite. So they've got a lot to prove with the upcoming Pro Evo 2009! Let's see if they're doing enough, by taking a look at the new/improved features this year.

Xbox Live Gets Music Videos, Whether You Want Them Or Not

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:00 PM on August 15, 2008

Microsoft today announced a deal with Warner Music that will see the label's music videos made available for download over Xbox Live. There's no mention of how much they'll cost, or whether they're in HD or not. Some of the first batch of artists featured will include Death Cab For Cutie, Flo Rida, Matchbox Twenty, Panic! At the Disco and T.I. Warner's Larry Mattera says of the deal:

With this agreement, we can take advantage of Microsoft's music platform and provide gamers what they want: music videos from their favourite artists that can be downloaded quickly and easily.

Man, when Larry says "what they want", he's not kidding. You can take your Bionic Commando and cram it, I'm off to grab a tub of ice cream and settle in with the girls for a Matchbox Twenty music video marathon!

80GB PS3 Available In Australia August 28

Now, Sony has announced an August 28 launch for the 80GB PS3 in Australia, only a day off the date we already had. The release mentions that the new unit will come with a Dual Shock 3 controller (yeah!), replace the 40GB model (meh) and retain the $699 price point (boo!). Nintendo To Boost Latin American Presence, Advertising

Nintendo aren't happy! Sure, they're making buckets of money from the Wii and DS, but shit, they could be making more. So starting this Christmas, the company will begin targeting the Latin American market more aggressively, with a Spanish-language marketing campaign and an emphasis on what Nintendo feel are the region's genres of choice: sports and fitness games. Sadly, no mention of Paper Pancho Bigotes, though we're sure Reggie's cracking that particular whip as we speak.

Prototype, Bourne Devs Given The Arse By Activision

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:40 PM on August 15, 2008

In July, Activision said they'd be "realigning" staff at High Moon Studios (Darkwatch, Bourne) and Radical Entertainment (Prototype), following their merger with Vivendi. "Realigning" is such an empty word. What they really meant was they'd be swinging the axe, cutting around 160 employees from the two studios. Around 100 are to be let go from Radical, while it's estimated around 50-60 are to be "realigned" right out of High Moon. While those are some big cuts, neither studio is to be closed, and work on Prototype and future Bourne games should continue.

Bionic Commando Out On PC, Just Not On Steam

You buy PC games online, there's generally only one place you do it: Steam. Shame, but it's not a complete disaster. The game will still be available on Direct2Drive, and also from Capcom's own store, so don't go feeling like you're missing out, or anything.

Letting Things Slide Into Place With Coign Of Vantage

Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 1:00 PM on August 15, 2008

New game mechanic detected! At least, I think it's a game. You get a score at the end, so I guess it counts as a game even if it feels more like a sort of zen exercise you might do to calm the mind after post-traumatic stress.

Coign of Vantage (sounds like Engrish, but actually means 'an advantageous position') is a flash game from casual games people Bobblebrook.

You have to use your mouse to rotate an image that has been exploded into voxels (3D pixels) until it matches the un-exploded image in the corner of the screen. When you do that, you get points and more time to play the next image. Thats it.

Its weirdly addictive in that lunchtime minesweeper-grinding kind of way. Some of the high scores imply people glued to their mice for weeks, so tread carefully if you tend to get sucked into things like this.

Xbox 360 Is Huge In Japan (This Week)

Microsoft Responds To July NPD Sales, Seems Pleased

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:40 AM on August 15, 2008

The Xbox 360 may have had a humbling hardware showing in July, according to U.S. sales data from the NPD Group, but the company as a whole seems quite pleased about the month in general. The first four paragraphs of its statement don't talk about NPDs at all, instead choosing to focus on its E3 showing and G4's G-Phoria Award noms.

On the qualitative side, Microsoft touts "more than $US 10.4 billion" worth of Xbox 360 spending since launch, a 34% software sales share in July, and four games in the top ten. It's also got those attach rate figure updates for you, with 7.9 games per Xbox 360 sold.

Sony Responds To NPD Sales, Seems Pleased

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:20 AM on August 15, 2008

The PlayStation brand had a pretty darn good month, as it continues to cool off from strong Metal Gear Solid 4 sales, with over 600,000 things named PlayStation sold in the U.S. last month. Sony Computer Entertainment America responded to those NPD figures today, citing "strong momentum" — one of our favourite intangibles — and flooding us with growth percentages.

The first percentage of note is the 99% year-to-date hardware sales growth of the PS3. SCEA also wows us with a 206% figure, which one can apply to year-to-date software sales on that platform. Stop! We're already getting dizzy!

We'll just let the soothing words and overhyphenating of CEO Jack Tretton finish the post off. He says "Our year-to-date sales growth of 99% for the PS3 reaffirms that consumers are indeed embracing PS3 as their entertainment hub-of-choice with its feature-rich offerings like Blu-ray and our recently announced video delivery service". Full percentage peppered gloat after the jump.

Nintendo Responds To July NPD Sales, Seems Pleased

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:00 AM on August 15, 2008

And why wouldn't it be, honestly? The Wii outsold both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 combined, moving more than half a million waggle boxes out the door, bringing with it more Wii Fit boards than one is allowed to legally shake a stick at. It also shifted over 600,000 Nintendo DSs, no small feat.

According to Nintendo gloat data, the Wii was responsible for 49% of all console sales, the DS claiming 73% of all handheld sales in July.

Unfortunately, Nintendo of America EVP of Sales & Marketing Cammie Dunaway was rather low key with her quoted statement, saying "Various types of games for the Nintendo systems are represented in the top 10, demonstrating how we continue to break down the barriers between veteran and new players." Adequate, but please punch it up for August, Cammie. Please?

No Format Shifting For PlayTV

Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 10:20 AM on August 15, 2008

US-based PS3 owners who were annoyed that Sony's PlayTV TV recorder won't be coming to NTSC-land can cheer up a bit. Sony has decided to redress the balance by making the PlayTV rubbish.

When we first heard about the PlayTV's ability to record TV while you played it sounded great and the decision to allow 'format shifting' of recordings to other devices was a real sea-change for the usually clenched Sony.

Sadly, it is back to tense-buttocked business as usual. Sony has announced that PlayTV owners will now only be able to stream recordings to a PSP using Remote Play. No reason, just because, although the usual concerns about intellectual property and loss of advertising revenue will doubtless be trotted out at some point.

Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory...

U.S. Celebrates Independence With $US 1.9 Billion Game Shopping Spree

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:40 AM on August 15, 2008

According to NPD figures, the video game industry racked up $US 1.19 billion in hardware, software and accessory sales in July. You could do worse, I suppose. Last year's take from the same month failed to crack the billion mark, but $US 446.9 million worth of hardware purchased by U.S. consumers and $US 591.1 in software, you make it close to a billion pretty easily. That $US 149.1 million in accessories just pushes you right over the edge.

The overall take for the month was up 28% for you percentage fetishists, making the year to date take $US 9.47 billion. Expect another record breaking year for the industry.

NCAA 09 [Insert Football Puns] U.S. Software Sales In July

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:20 AM on August 15, 2008

Nintendo may have reigned supreme in U.S. hardware, but it's the Xbox 360 that enjoys the best selling software for the month of July, as NCAA Football 09 moved close to 400,000 copies on Microsoft's platform. Wii Fit wasn't far behind, as it helped 369,000-plus Wii owners become that much healthier.

NCAA Football had a strong showing on the PlayStation 3 as well, garnering a fifth place showing in the top ten, beating out the month's other new debut, Soulcalibur IV. Namco Bandai's fighter sold better on the 360 than it did on the PS3 to the tune of about 60,000 units. With only three days of sales accounted for in July, 375,000 or so copies sold isn't too shabby.

One top ten surprise, Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution, adds a bit of variety to the NPD best sellers, which are after the jump.

Nintendo Dominates U.S. July Sales, Sells Another Million

The Xbox 360 continues to lounge in second to last place, but it saw the least substantial month-to-month drop. Those drops may be chalked up to a shorter window of accounting, as June saw a five week month sales period, with July consisting of four weeks of sales.

Braid Review: Time, Time, Time, See What You've Done To Me?

There's simply nothing else like Braid on the Xbox 360. Jonathan Blow's time-twisting puzzle game may look like a simple 2D platformer, with its numerous allusions to genre trailblazers like Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros., but its temporal puzzle mechanics and mature, powerful storytelling help it pioneer its own path. In Braid, our hero Tim embarks on a quest to right a wrong, rescue a princess and manipulate the fourth dimension in exciting, creative ways.

Is Braid worth your time?
