Let's face it, Basketball games have come a long way since NBA Jam. Speaking of which NBA 2K9 is shaping up pretty nicely. In this quick teaser we get a look at what we can expect in terms of visuals. The game will hit store shelves on October 7th for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2.

@bv: ???. Might want to wait a few more weeks, he just got on board. What is a "some mainstream type game". You got excited because NBA Jam is considered a "dash of nerdy history"?.
Now all we need is Pierce screaming in the opening and its ALL BUTTER.

I like this Adam Barenblat writer. For some reason, every time i am about to read a kotaku post where the topic is some mainstream type game, I'm always expecting a paragraph dripping wet in acidic sarcasm. Sometimes it's too much to always read negative posts so I'm glad Adam has mixed it up with his straight shooter articles with a dash of nerdy history. Thumbs up.

@sarcasmOD: Agreed. NBA Jam and NFL Blitz were the only sports games I ever liked enough to pay money for.

Man they need to bring NBA JAM Back! They don't need to screw it up either and make it all 3d looking. Keep it the exact same style as it used to be and give it to us.
make it playable over Live too. I'd buy that game in a heartbeat.

I think NBA Jam was the last basketball game I played. This does look impresive though, too bad I don't play sports video games.

Forget the game, I want another press release quoting Kevin Garnett about it. Those are more entertaining than the game itself.

NBA Live has turned into NBA Jam; more arcadey then sim. NBA 2K9 is almost an automatic purchase for me.

It looked like the net was made out of some rebounding jelly that flys up when a basketball touches it.
two cans tied together and thrown down the street to wake up the surrounding neighbors with a loud annoying noise

A long way since NBA Jam? That game is the pinnacle of NBA games to me. Realism? HAH. Hasn't anyone learned that real-life is boring and that you have to be able to jump 50 feet and make full-court shots in order to make things interesting again?

I can't wait, this game is going to be epic. 2k8 was near perfect, this looks to improve in everyway from what I have been reading. The graphics look better as well.
Posted 7:24 AM 15/8/08
I am a big fan of these games but am scared ... I heard that it wasn't really being worked on too much. NBA2k8 was great but needed A LOT of fixes. I am worried that with the Take-Two merger hoopla, that the team was still able to focus and get the funding they needed to improve the game enough to warrant another purchase from me ...

So can I play as the Seattle Sonics in a fake 2009 season?

So where's Jordan vs. Bird 2K9?
The uncanny valley, she is deep and wide.

@WhaleMenace:
Holy crap, I forgot about Double Dribble. I think i might still have that one too. That was the first basketball game I ever played and it was awesome.
After that NBA Jam ruled my household and still would if they would republish it.

I don't think basketball games have come anywhere from nba jam, which is still the most fun I've had with the sport outside double dribble!

@sarcasmOD: Don't forget about catching on fire, you CAN'T have a good basketball game without catching on fire.

What about spinning dunks from the 3 point line and beyond?
Where is the catching on fire?
Can I play as the mascots?
Can I "put up a rainbow"
The non-realistic sports games will always be better than any of these photo-realistic ones. NBA Jam > all others, Blitz > madden, SSX > Shaun White, etc..
realistic games are cool in terms of their graphics, but they aren't as much fun.

Will you be able to use a cheat where you fake an injury get carted off on a wheelchair and then get a +10 momentum in the game?
How about paying off the refs, is that feature in the game?

@: Mainstream type game is Madden, NBA 2K, Need for Speed, Most EA games...etc. He's been on board since July 17th and has around 30 posts, so he isn't exactly "just on board". NBA Jam is not nerdy history, but it's just a fun reference...not too serious. I do wish he had the chance to post more than just videos because that seems like all he's doing for now

@dadeisvenm: I'm with you there. NBA 2k is bought, no questions asked. it's a shame, because I'd love to see what Visual Concepts would do with a current gen NFL2k. All Pro doesn't count for the obvious non NFL rights reasons.
What's this about NBA Jam? Better than 2K? How can you even compare the two? Is that supposed to be Joystiq brand commentary? Side ways comedy? My bad, I totally missed it.

The players look as real as I've ever seen in a game. I'll be skipping over it since I don't buy Basketball games (at least for a $60 price) but those visuals are on fire.

I'm STILL playing NBA2K8. About to enter the NBA Finals. I honestly don't know how I played stuff like NBA Jam after spending enough time with these games. Its like going back and playing Marathon after Halo.

Why do they show Kevin Garnett as the video still, and then the video is all Pierce? Seems strange to me.
Also, for such good graphics the sound was awful. The heartbeat thing got old pretty fast, especially considering I didn't think there was a very 'tense' moment in the video (which is what I would consider using that overplayed sound for) and then the crowd cheering at the end? It sounded like it was the crowd cheer noise from some N64 game.
But maybe I'm just looking way too much into it. It's just a teaser, after all...
