Capcom Still Has 'Ace Up Its Sleeve' For Bionic Commando
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 2:00 PM on August 16, 2008
And not any ace, says Bionic Commando producer Ben Judd in his ear wax shirt, but a "fucking ace". At a small event for the launch of Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Judd said that the downloadable title was doing way better than it had been targeted. "There were people at Capcom who told me not to make this game", Judd said. While BC:R is doing well, Judd says that it won't do nearly as well as the upcoming 3D version, which has apparently gotten a recent control tweak to make the game less frustrating. "Store retail games always do better than downloadable games", he added. As Judd goes off to Sweden to oversee developer GRIN's finishing of Bionic Commando, he stated:
We still have a fucking ace up our sleeve. It's an ace, a fucking ace... At TGS (Tokyo Game Show), the Capcom booth stage is going to make people's balls pucker up. It's going to be big.
When questioned further, Judd would not reveal what this ace was. Wonder what Capcom still has left to announce for Bionic Commando...
Thanks Jon for the iPhone pic!

@banana_ridah: We treat remakes with cynicism and contempt?
Can you name some?
Mostly what I see are remakes selling like mofo hotcakes (especially on the DS, especially if it has the name Final Fantasy in it).
Heck, even on the PC remakes have large followings. Especially if it has the name Quest in it ;)

@EmeraldCockroach: Um, there are three good fucking reasons these so-called "fanboys" are getting worked up:
1) The game is awesome.
2) The original NES game it was based on is awesome.
3) Judd and his team managed to make a 20 year old game relevant in an age where we treat remakes with cynicism and contempt.

@GrandfatherParadox: Not trying to start a fight or call you out or anything but I honestly believe passion is borne from working towards a goal diligently and isn't a skill that is applied to something of one's choosing. Hence if they are working on this game passionately, it proves that Capcom, Grim, and those closely involved with the project are capable of working towards something with passion and not that they have some cache of passion sitting somewhere waiting for someone to come along and tell them to do something original with it.

I'll wait for about ten reviews of the new Bionic Commando before giving it a shot.
Don't get me wrong, Grin did a fantastic job with rearmed. But that's like saying someone slapped updated graphics on Street Fighter II and omg it's an awesome game! (Grin did more than that, I know - it's very, very good). My point is they would have had to deviate significantly from the source to screw it up.
The Big New Bionic Commando coming to Blu-Ray and HD-DVD doesn't have that advantage. Not many franchises survived the transition to 3D unscathed (I'm looking at you, Sonic. And Castlevania. Metroid and Mario, you guys were fine - and an exception to the rule).
Fucking Ace or no, judgment shall be reserved!

@EmeraldCockroach: Fanboys by nature don't infect you. They generally ignore you and engage in ritual head butts with other fanboys of opposing clans. You are safe as long as you don't have an opinion and keep facts to yourself. Fanboys do however become aware of your presence when you break any of the stated tenants, they do attack to they poison you. The younger of the fanboys are especially dangerous as they are born with a full pouch of ignorance and they don't know how to control their venom. Generally an fanboy bite can be healed with a little education but if bitten by a younger one, this generally results in fatal frustration.
Other Points of Interest:
Natural enemies include ban-hammers, crayons, reason.
Irritants: NPDs, review scores, crayons
Diet: Shit, crayons, stupidity, NPDs, review scores, F5 key, bitterness, hate
Natural Habitats: Behind the toilet, under a bridge, under Crecente's table (they gather there through no fault of his), forums and strangely enough 7/11s
Favorite lines: "...I own all three systems...", "This game sux", "Obvious troll obvious", and "ANYBODY-san is a genius"
...
At this point your probably asking yourself why did I tell you all this. I wanted you to know and case your wondering... I'm not a fanboy, I own all three systems <3
...also listen to the Bionic Commando Podcasts. How can one game's podcast be so interesting? Just like the Bungie stuff, the passion these guys have really come through in those podcasts.

@MrBionic: Sure.
Sonic the Hedgehog (Xbox 360, PS3).
Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA)
Rygar (PS2, Wii).
Turok (XBox 360, PS3).
Mega Man Powered Up (PSP).
Now, bear in mind, I don't think that all remakes suck, but I feel a lot of players who have fond memories of the original game have a sense of ownership with a particular title. When the new title doesn't live up the to the expectations of visions of these people, then the response is negative. Hence, the cynicism and skepticism. Remember what was said about Metroid when it went to first-person perspective for the first time? Or when we saw the graphics for Wind Waker?
In Bionic Commando: ReArmed's case, the creators were so respectful to the source material, yet weren't afraid to innovate or throw the players for a loop.
And yes, I agree, SquareEnix's re-releases of the Final Fantasy series are quite good and making a fuck-ton of cash.

It's obviously the prequel to mass effect which is in turn the prequel to star wars. Nostradamus said that in a prophecy: " The people will swing, new worlds will be found, and we will feel the force." I'm sure that's what it is, but Bioware, Capcom, and LucasArts haven't let us in on it . . .

@splotki5000: I think out of all of them, Judd has the most right to sound the way he does. He clawed his way up in Capcom JAPAN, convinced them to go for the remake against all odds, was told he would fail, and now everyone loves it. I would kick sand in peoples faces and say shit like this too, if I was in his position. He just proved his upper management wrong AND secured his future job AND made an awesome game all at the same time. Of course he's pumped.

@banana_ridah: Now I have to do bullet points. Curses!
Sonic the Hedgehog (Xbox 360, PS3). - That wasn't a "remake" per se as it was a re-imagining and updating. After all, it was 3D, and was more in line with many of the "sequels" that preceded it. It's just too different from the very original 2D Sonics to be considered here.
Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA) - Not familiar with this title, so I'll take your word for it.
Rygar (PS2, Wii). - Again, not a *true* remake.
Turok (XBox 360, PS3). - Turok was *never* good ;)
Mega Man Powered Up (PSP). I don't remember any negativity from Mega Man fans for this one at all. Most mega-Mega Man fans I knew were all out for it.
So, not exactly the best examples. Yes, cynicism and disappointment *ABOUND* for bad updates into "next-gen" systems for well-loved franchises, but there's a giant difference between a true remake, and what Sonic the Hedgehog and Turok and other games like them are. IMO

@Revenge_of_Nekojin: You are missing the point of my statement.
I agree with you. In my opinion, both games were fucking awesome.
The overall response from gamers, however, was not as positive than previous entries in their respective series and this was reflected in the overall sales of both titles. Why do you think we'll probably never see Megaman Powered Up 2 or 3 (at least on PSP)? Because the first one sold for shit (granted PSP at the time wasn't as widespread a platform as it is today, but still...)
If you read the next paragraph, I was trying to make the point that gamers feel that their favorite franchises should meet their expectations, whether it be in graphics, art style, gameplay, etc. and when they don't, that is when cynicism and contempt (ie, the reaction to Metroid going FPS and Wind Waker's visual style).

@banana_ridah: Well, hey, I never said anything about you hating remakes.. I was just wondering where you got that remakes were a source of cynicism from fans, but it ended up just being a difference on what the term "remake" meant.
To me, a remake is an updated version of an original game with new graphics and features, but leaving the story and gameplay almost entirely alone. The games that DO this are pretty much 100% of the time VERY well received.
It's when the story and gameplay are constantly messed with and changed that we get where you are coming from.. Such as is the case with Sonic especially... but I personally would never consider any of them a remake.
So, yes, semantics.

@MrBionic: Ha ha. But now I must counter you bullet points with my own! Foiled again!
Sonic the Hedgehog: While I agree with you that it was more in line with the Dreamcast titles, I still view it as a remake in the fact that it is a known set of characters and gameplay. The disappointment from gamers could be heard all over, from the lengthy load times to incomprehensibly horrible storyline (ie, kissing a human in front of Amy Rose? WTF?)
Metroid Zero Mission: Ok, but if you have a DS, you should track it down, I think it's a great game.
Rygar: How was this one not a true remake? You got to explain yourself on this...
Turok: Ha ha. You may not think so (and I agree!), but Turok64 still has its fans. Why else would they decide that making this travesty of a remake? Nostalgia? Nostalgia doesn't pay the bills.
Mega Man Powered Up: From Mega Man Fans, no. From the rest of gamers who complained about the cutsey art style or floaty physics, not so much love.
So yeah, we may disagree in semantics, but at least we can recognize a personally disappointing game when we see one.
Before I dig myself further into a hole, let me make a point: I don't hate remakes of games, but just because a game shares a title or character in common with a revered franchise, that doesn't mean it gets a free pass in my book. In fact, I'll probably scrutinize it even more closely. Conversely, if a game has had a bad pedigree or a "black sheep" in its family, that doesn't necessarily mean that I personally will condemn the next update in the series to bargain bin purgatory. I'll give it a shot so I can at least have informed opinions.

BCR is my game of the year so far. It's the best XBLA title i've ever played (even beating Ikaruga, sick), and the one i've played the most. In fact if they'd slapped a few more levels on and added online play i would've bought it full priced. It's the kind of game where i want to go over and shake the hand of everybody who worked on it, or buy them all a ridiculously flamboyant umbrella cocktail. It's that good of a game.
Fundamentally, it's about how they realized that the good thing to BC was really how you started out being shit and then as your skill progressed the game opened like a rose, which is what warranted multiple playthroughs. They took the skill element of BC and just turned it up to 11; BCR has got to be the only run+gun platformer in recent years to have that same one-more-go quality you get from hard puzzlers.
I had NO faith in the BC update until i played BCR. These guys get it. Consider me stoked as hell, dreads, stupid run animation and all. I'm stoked.
