Worlds in Motion with Orbitrunner
Posted by Owen Good at 4:00 AM on August 17, 2008
Alright class, time for a flash game. This is "Orbitrunner" and it's reasonably addictive for such a simple concept -- place your star on the grid so that the planets (and their satellites) fall into orbit without smashing into you, each other, or going out of the boundary. I'm not sure how realistic the gravity physics are, but it's very challenging, and I like the background music. The collision/explosion sound/animation is lame, however. I was hoping for a Praxis Effect. If they put this in a 3D, rotatable-camera environment, I'd play it for hours.
You can skip up to five levels if you find you're just not getting the hang of one. It stores your IP address and lets you continue.

waah, I'm terrible at this game.

As a math major, I feel really weird playing games for which there are already well-researched mathematical algorithms. Like Sudoku.

This is amazing. Its a challenging puzzle trying to get the physics to just balance correctly for a stable orbit or stable enough to last 14 seconds.

Yeah, this game doesn't do too much for me. It would be one thing if it at least had Geometry Wars exploding stars or something but, everything about it is just sort of bland...

I made this exact game in QBasic years ago in programming class. I'm not even kidding you guys.

kind of a BS difficulty curve. For the first five levels, you literally don't have to do a thing. The starting position of the sun will solve the level. Then the difficulty ramps up a couple hundred percent on level 6. Not really that much fun.

It's a great toy to play with.

It's okay. It felt more "finicky" than fun to me. It just wasn't fun to try and find the one spot it worked in, or just move it enough to keep the planets in.

Level 10 and 106 "faults." This game is evil.

I prefer Gravity Simulator. It's not flash, and you have to install it, and it's not graphically exciting...
But if you want to see what would happen if you turned the Earth into an object with the mass of the sun, then by golly, this is the simulator for you!
Hint: The moon reaches galactic escape velocity.
