A Look at the New Civilization Colonization Trailer
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 3:00 AM on August 20, 2008
For years we have kept Kotaku tower a closely guarded secret. However, today we revealed our rendition of it. Wouldn't it be nice to build a Kotaku colony? We could have little Crecentes and Faheys running around. This of course brings us to this new Sid Meir's Civilization IV Colonization Trailer. In the video we get a look at the time periods that the new game will focus on. I was too young to appreciate Sid Meier's Colonization back in '94, but this time it seems he's bringing the concept to a new generation. Expect it in stores later this year.

I can't believe they have to put an ESRB warning about "tobacco reference".
Apparently, mentioning a historically significant cash crop in a historical game will cause kids to start smoking or something?

@kingofrain:
I'm so glad I'll get to play the colonists, I wouldn't make near the same mistakes they did since I have 20/20 hindsight. Make sure all of the natives are dead so they can't live to bitch about it 200 years later!

Well, the trailer was fairly impressive and gives a good feel for what you'll be doing. But as a trailer with no gameplay footage it effectively means nil.
But it's a Civ game, so I'm assuming it will at least be decent. I'll definitely give it a try when reviews come out.

@antialias02: Agreed.
From screenshots, it looks like a slightly beefed Civ IV, so not a "lot" different on the map itself... but I'm curious what they've done with management of the colonies and how the flow there works.

i figured that you have to hit the play button once, then pause immediately to wait for the entire video to buffer int he background. Then you can play the video to your heart's content. No hard feelings.

i don't know what video player you guys at Kotaku are using but ever since you switched to this one it buffers every three to four seconds. its not fun watching videos anymore on Kotaku.

I am very excited for Civ:Col, but I have to say, I wish the trailer had included a frame or two of in-game footage. They really didn't *show* anything - except that the game takes place in Colonial America.
And who didn't see that coming?

I imagine I'm exceedingly alone in this, but I'd like to see them release Colonization as DLC for Civ Revolution on the consoles for times when I feel like playing some Civ but don't feel like spending 12 hours to do it.
That said, I'll certainly be picking this up. Been a long while since I played Colonization.
@bubassi: How so? I mean... it's not a pure or deep civ, pretty much a simplified and streamlined game. I'll grant you, there's some things I'd like to see different, but "calamity"? Just curious, really, as someone who's been sinking a lot of time into it lately and enjoying it for what it is.

They forgot the part in history when the europians stabbed the natives in the back and slaughtered them all :)

I can respect a remake of a classic game like this, however unless this brings me something significantly different in gameplay, I think I'll give it a pass. I, up until recently, still pulled out the original colonization occasionally. More recently I've been playing a lot of Freecol. The open source free remake of the original. It's much an improvement of the original even in its currently unfinished state.

I was half expecting the native americans to show up with laser guns and battle armor to blast the crap out of the colonists.

I am soooo pissed off about this game. I'm starting law school in a week, and they're going to throw this at me in the middle of my first semester? How the hell am I going to get my work done with Colonization around?
Seriously, Sid. Not cool.

Consider the thing claims the game is coming in September, you'd have thought this close to release they'd have something a little more substantial to show than some pretty mediocre rendered CG.

@dv8godd: i understand that the game has to be simplified and boiled down to work well on a console but the problem is that they take one step fowards and two steps back by forcing you to make a choice on every city you have which becomes tedious when you have a huge empire. The biggest gripe i have with the game is the lack of choice over how many ai's you might want to take on, locking teams(permanent alliances) and the general size of maps, and an awful zoom out function. but this is just my experiance.

Seeing Civ news just burns - lost my newly bought copy of Revolution while traveling.
Sid is somewhere laughing, because he knows I'm just going to break down and buy it again one of these days...

@bubassi: "...forcing you to make a choice on every city you have which becomes tedious when you have a huge empire."
I would agree with that. The inability to set up queues and governors is a bit of a nuisance. That and coupled with the "I'm going to drag your screen over here to manage this now" turns you into a middle manager rather than a gamer. It's kinda like they streamlined the process of micromanaging, but didn't really give you a way around it.
"The biggest gripe i have with the game is the lack of choice over how many ai's you might want to take on, locking teams(permanent alliances) and the general size of maps,"
More customization for game setup would be nice, agreed. It hasn't impacted my enjoyment per se... but it's kinda silly to not have such an obvious and seemingly simple set of options. It would at least improve my enjoyment.
" and an awful zoom out function"
Yeah... that is pretty useless.
...
I wasn't disagreeing, really, just curious to see how it has stacked up for other players. I think it does a number of things right that I do enjoy quite a bit, but I do agree with the hassles you've pointed out.
It'd be nice if they would patch or release some DLC that could address some of those concerns.

Long time Sid fan predating the first Colonization but pre-rendered video which does not represent gameplay is useless.
Dying to play it though...

@Lou3000: RTS?
I don't believe there's anything "real-time" about it unless I missed where Sid was throwing us all for a loop. Perhaps you meant TBS (turn-based strategy)?
Interesting faux pas tho. Colonization meets Sins of a Solar Empire... could work.

It's about time they come back to the Colonization game. I honestly liked that one better than Civilization, even if it was a very short game. Then again, trying to play Civilization on a new computer makes even that game go by really quickly now. I wonder if this time you will be able to play as the natives or if you will still have a huge advantage if you choose the Spanish and just rape the Aztecs and Mayans early on to where you have a huge army while everyone else is just starting their colonies.

Hmmmm... after looking at the site, I can't find anything in Colonization that can't be done by creating a MOD for Civ-IV (which I think has been done already to mimic Colonization).
