Far Cry 2 Map Editor Looks Absolutely Amazing
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on August 20, 2008
If you're not interested in Far Cry 2 yet, you may well be after this. Ignore the Irish chap and his corny sales pitch and just focus on trying to remember the last FPS you played on a console (this is the 360 version) that let you build complex, detailed maps as though you were playing Advance Wars.

@AxelMinami:
It will definitely last longer. Far Cry 2 has received way more hype than the other 360 Far Cry, which, at least to me, seemed like an effort to pump some more cash out of Far Cry:Instincts which had lackluster sales on the original Xbox.

Wow. I am actually semi-interested in this game now.
However, As awesome and fun as map editors are, how is the gameplay? I suppose it's a semi-typical shooter?
I mean, like Crysis, amazing graphics, but the gameplay was just the same old stuff more or less.
I dunno. It will for sure be fun playing your own maps, but when the premise is "shoot this" it kinda takes away from it all. I dunno. But this CERTAINLY adds a TON of replay value to the game, and who knows, I'm sure some external-box thinkers can come up with some very interesting alternatives to the "run and gun" strategy.
The village thing sounds pretty awesome :D

@Atheist Jew:
We all know this...90% of the people on FREAK'N Kotaku are or were PC gamers. Are people out there stupid enough to think that "console" gamers on a site like this know nothing about PC's. Map editors aren't "being discovered" or "new" to us either.
My 360 and PC are connected to the same 42" 1080p tv. I game on the 360 80% of the time, but my PC is my Blu-Ray/Gaming when I feel like it system. I may spend most of my time on the 360, but my hand built PC is more than capable of running games like Crysis and Far Cry on High to Very High settings. Get over yourselves...(hand to forehead)

Yes, you can share them with others - when you join a game with a custom map it downloads to your hard drive. The full article said that Ubi was going to keep a list of best maps based on player ratings.
And, no, you can't script solo maps/missions. They hinted that might be in Far Cry 3...

I was a heavy user of both the Xbox and 360 Far Cry map editors - it's probably my favorite playground software ever created, and this looks to be vastly superior.
To the poster above, you can set the height on all object - the trees are only the same height because he painted them in quickly on flat ground.
Also, to those kids who only played the 360 version of Far Cry - I don't know why, but it was horribly slow-running compared to it's original Xbox counterpart. I'm guess it was a quicky port - I have no doubt that with a proper development cycle this game will run as great as the original did.
Also, there's a performance meter in the top right corner that shows the fps you're getting from any particular angle, so you can make sure you're not drawing too much at once - it was rare to run into it on the Xbox, so I'm guessing the 360 will handle it even better. Plus, you can test it instantly - it switches from editor to playing seamlessly.
So psyched!

And I agree with Dave, I too find it enjoyable to see console-centric people discover map editors. This isn't special, it's standard. PC games have been shipping with editing software for almost two decades if not longer. I'm happy to see console owners of the game will receive such a powerful editor, it really should have been a common practice years ago.

Yes they have. But have any of them been as intuitive as this? or Halo 3's forge? or even Little big planet? No. they're all industry standard SDK programs, something you could have a career doing. i.e something that takes forvewr to learn.
These consle map editors are genuine extensions to the gaming experience, a part of the package that ALL consumers can engage in and enjoy.

@.digiwalsh: The reason the console map editors are easier to use than the PC counterparts is that they are very simple and you can't do much with them. You are basically limited to the objects that came with the game and you just place them where you want on the map and maybe scale and rotate them. The PC editors are more complex because you can do pretty much whatever you want with them.

The FC map editor for the original Xbox was flawless, and the 360 port was pretty close. The key difference between a PC map editor (yeah, yeah, around for years, blah, blah, blah) is the ease with which your map is created. And Far Cry allows more than just weapons placement like Forge.
I've played some great custom maps for FCI:Predator. I can't wait to play FC2.

@Bergerac: Huh? You should really back up that statement with some sort of insight. Considering a lot of innovation was on PCs first (Amiga, Microsoft and Apple PCs) it's hard to say consoles led them. Especially when you're talking about shooters since the whole genre and it's cultivation of modding was practically started by id Software alone. Good chance that if people weren't modding back in the Doom and Quake days and furthermore if id didn't support them on it then it's safe to say we probably wouldn't be as far along now as we are. I dare say developers would take the entirely different stance of being afraid that user-generated content could adversely affect sales.
On topic: that Irish voice isn't so bad as is his narration. Sounds like he's coddling the viewer like he was trying to sell Fischer-Price toys.
The map editor does look astounding though, hopefully with all the pre-fabs there will be some good single-player maps generated by users. Admirable of Ubisoft to take such a huge leap in their map editor to make it accessible even on consoles.

Bergerac's point was aimed more at PC Gamer snottiness in general. Before id did their stuff, consoles like the NES and Sega systems were really starting to kick off and become solid pillars of gaming [marketing/ moneymaking]. I reckon that's what Bergerac was digging at; PC lads talking down to their other half.
Digiwash also makes a great call there, even if the Halo 3 Forge comparison was a weak one ;). PC Map editors (full FPS/RTS ones) have always been a serious bitch to use (for anyone not willing to get stuck in fully or long-term), and the FarCry map editor was the first to step out forward out of this realm.

@Kenshi_Ryden: Although that is a simple Tony Hawks style level editor. Which is a good thing.. but PC editors are more of putting something proper to get me (cant think of how to explain).
That editor looks nice for a mess about. But its limited to that small square :(.

Nobody mentioned UnrealED 3. This editor isn't even as advanced as the ORIGINAL Unreal ED. It came out in the 90's. You might remember it.
@el_rezzo:
Why are half the comments like this? Is a map editor really that groundbreakingly amazing to console gamers?

For you that compare this to PC map editors where you should have an doctors degree for just being able to make a map, compare this to Forge instead, then you understand why everyone is so excited...

looks great but I would bet this will get used a ton more on the PC side of things...as cool as it looks for 360, I can't think of anyone that would want to build something on their console, just seems tedious. Now, the question, is MS going to charge people to download extras on Xbox Live or will all the content people create be free? That was the problem with Epic, so I don't see this being any different on 360. MS just doesn't want to allow people to get stuff for free.

Man, I loved the map editor on Far Cry Instincts, so much you could do.
Maybe I'll pick this title up for only the map editor and hopefully get a good single player game as well =D

Well, looks quite superficial to me. About on the level of doing maps for RTS games 10 years ago.
That comes from an avid mapper for the Source engine, though so I might have different ideas of what a map editor should do. Sure looks fun.

The reason Console gamers are excited about this is because there haven't been a lot of console games with a map editor built in.
I've built dozens of maps in Valve's Hammer map editor, and it feels a lot like 3D Modelling does in 3dsmax. This is a simple point and drag map editor, and I can't think of one on a PC that does this as easily. A good map in Hammer could take hours and hours to come to fruition, a good map here could take an hour or so and be awesome.
Then, you simply load the map on your 360 and play with friends instantly. On a PC, you have to load the map on the server, and have everyone connect to your PC/Server. Its a different experience.
A lot of console gamers are also PC gamers (wow! I know, big news!) and have probably spent just as many hours customizing maps themselves. This doesn't mean they can't also be excited about a highly advanced yet simple to use map editor for their consoles when the other options consist of Timesplitters, Halo's Forge and old games like Far Cry 1.

Well, if I want to make cool maps I'll go with Team Fortress 2. At least there, every map has a cool purpuse (exept backstabbing people)
And building maps on the PS3, sounds really cool, can't wait for Little Big Planet =)

Sorry guys, but I just don't get it, oh well.
I'd rather have a bunch of good maps out of the box than depend on other players to make them.
There's no way I'm paying $60 for half a game.
It just looks like a shooter where you can make your own maps. What's the big deal?!
I think that about covers it. :)
Anyway it looks like a blast. Nice and easy compared to my attempts to make maps for the original Half-Life with that Hammer editor or whatever.

@rljohn:
We both know the vast, vast majority of Kotaku readers are strictly console gamers. It's always funny to see people on Kotaku that claim they used to be PC gamers, yet they know absolutely nothing about PC gaming (not referring to you).
They're excited over an editor. Not a powerful editor. Not a complex editor. Just an editor that they can use somewhat. Compare it to the SSBB editor. They're both easy to use, but obviously VERY limited in what they can actually do in terms of gameplay. You can't make new weapons in this. You can't put in custom models. Half the reason map editors and such on PCs are so fantastic is the real extra amount of gameplay they add. This won't, in my opinion, add much to the lifespan of this game.
Not to mention Far Cry 1 was a terrible game.

NO FLOATING FORTS... unless there is plenty of deep water, and a REALLY long ladder leading back up that is very open to bullets, yes!

Ah fuck it! I couldn't even get halfway down the page without this turning into an off-topic mess.
Guys can we forget that whole PC vs Console, they have/I have bullshit for at least a day or two? Seriously it's like deja vu - the same argument every time.
Back on topic....
I thought the editor on the original xbox Far Cry was great. It really extended the play time of the game for me and it actually caused me to buy the shitty port that they made for the 360 - which was really a bad decision on my part ;-)
Plunkett's right, this has brought the game a lot higher on my list of games to get.

@ST19AG_WGreymon:
There's were about 20-30 trees in the last one - this seems to have a lot more - they just painted the trees on the demo one with one kind of pre-made cluster. I'm sure every single tree in the single player will be available.

@dozerking: There's were thousands of maps created on the Xbox version, and that's the whole point, it isn't tedious in the slightest - it's astoundingly simple. That's the charm of it. And, no, MS didn't charge before - they don't own the content - you just download the custom map when you join the multiplayer game.
Doe anyone actually read the comments before commenting? Because almost every question has been answered here a half a dozen times.

@karateka: Distributed computing was always capable on PCs well before the PS1 came out. I'm assuming that you're referring to the Folding@Home thing; sorry but PCs can do that as well since it has access to essentially the same software. Since there are more PCs in use than PS3s, theoretically PCs will out compute PS3s...blah,blah. Don't get me wrong, I love my PS3 but do some basic research before you boast about something that's irrelevant to modern gaming such as distributed computing through a lame football analogy.

I think that using the Far Cry map editor would be a great example for how PC vs. Console differs.
The editor that you got with Instincts made it easy to create and to make a map on the fly for a quick game of multiplayer.
The pc version allowed you to script it, texture it, size it and customise it to your own liking. You where never able to make great indoor map on the console, but had hosts of posibilitys with the PC version. But then again, with PC you had to have plenty of time to make a map wich was okay, but with the same time you could make a map that was great with console.
I honestly prefer the console version wich allows most people to create a map from their imagination. I would like to see a PC editor with the same ease of use as the console (a point, click, drag and add editor), but with the possibility for us who can script and photoshop to also include that. Look to ArmA or OFP to see how it's done, the only thing you miss there is a landscape editor.

I really hope this becomes the norm and doesn't stay the exception.
UT3 for PS3 was a baby step. But it was lame in the sense that the whole reason I got the game for PS3 is that chasing specs for PC games is silly and expensive.
And since my PC is a laptop that I actually use outside my house, lugging around a true desktop replacement wasn't an option.
