New Skate It Video Discusses Controls
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 5:40 AM on August 20, 2008
We gave you an early look at Skate 2 a few weeks ago, now we look at the controls for Skate It. I am really excited to see how the Wii remote works as a skateboard. It sounds like they are going the same route SSX Blur took on the Wii. Expect it this holiday on Wii and Nintendo DS.

This is what Rockstar wanted out of Thrasher, and dame i still love that game, but inevitably this is exactly what thrasher should have been.
I'm confusing my self. I love Thrasher, and Skate is addicting. i don't even have the game, i just play the demo over and over again. I'm waiting for my g/f to get me skate.

"The purest representation of skating on a console"? I know moving sticks isn't representative, but neither is flicking your wrist. Last I checked, skaters used their feet.

@agies: I wasn't saying it's button mashing, but flailing ones arm about to do a move that's the base of every trick in the game sounds like it would be incredibly tiring and repetitive--much like hitting buttons over and over and over...

@sir_carrot: Um. Is it me, or did you just describe the Skate It controls using the Wii Balance Board? Sounds like a 'practical way to make a Wii peripheral like that'. Of course, for those of us (like me) who don't have a Balance Board, we don't get that option...
@LittleBigPlaneteer: Do you even have a Wii or do you just post here to criticise every time a company tries to actually use the controller? Just saying.
Controls might suck, they might be great, but it's good that they tried to make use of the actual controller. Let's wait until somebody who isn't paid by EA gets to play it and write some reviews, shall we?
Overall I'm pretty interested in this game, can't say that about a skateboarding game for years... but we'll see, as I just said it might suck. (Also I like the way they blurred out all the graphics in their trailer... yes I saw the screenshots, didn't think they were that bad...)

Looks very intuitive at least.. if the controls are responsive, this can be a very good game.

Uh. The amount of nuance required in skateboarding is ridiculous. Or everyone could do it.
Considering they plan on using the Wii remote to emulate that - huh. Should be interesting.
I remember when I was younger and I'd get dragged along on business trips with my dad, sometimes we'd hit a fancy hotel that had a good arcade - and they'd have those skateboarding games where you stood on a fake board and braced yourself on the rails, swooshing it around to do tricks.
Now that was some entertaining motion control for skateboarding. Of course, there's no practical way they could make a Wii peripheral like that.

Also that Jay Balmer guy looks like he's either dying, or has a serious heroine addiction.

I cringe when developers get so excited about waggling. And then they have the nerves to call this the most realistic skating experience? Yes because flipping your remote upwards to do an ollie is so fucking life-like.
Fail.

@Josh Lowensohn: Yeah, because replacing the trick stick with the Wii remote is button mashing...

Looks a little gimmicky to me. The joy of that game to me was the option to just sit there and cruise around with very little button mashing--this takes that a step backwards.

I love the thrasher game! It's still one of my favorites.
I should be pro as hell at this game, I constantly do skate tricks with my TV remote when I'm watching TV. I got a hell of a flick. I can to tre flips with my eyes closed!

@ LittleBigPlaneteer
So I guess you felt the same way about the original Skate on the 360/PS3 then? Because holding the remote horizontal like a board and flipping it up sounds a bit closer to reality to me than flicking a stick with your thumb. And from all I've read about this game so far, its NOT about flailing your arms around wildly, but more holding the remote and doing just like he said...flick it up...down...twist it to the side...etc. How is that arm flailing? (Last part not necessarily at you LittleBigPlaneteer but the others who were saying that.)

@quen: I'm pretty sure he was talking about a setup where you basically stand on a board at the end of a large, swinging arm that pivots, not a board that sits on the floor and measures your weight distribution.

eh its still waggle... the day motion plus is the wii standard ill maybe think about buying another wii game. i dont think anyone is looking at the things they changed that made the game great though, the physics were the absolute turning point of that game they made it so great. being a skateboarder for 10 + years and watched as many skate vids as i have the physics were spot on it really recreated the style and feel of tricks accuratly. also i loved the camera in skate this one im not feeling. but on the plus side some of those environments are wicked looking especially the tit(watch the video you will see it, skateboard terminology not me being a perv) i want those environments in hd with a dualshock and not a waggle-mote.

they have to be excited about it, because they want you to buy the game. as for the game, ill try it out. i gotta say i hate to see the motion plus as an add in, the remote should have been like that from the beginning, thus this and every game would be probably twice as good...with half the waggle.

they've should make a second control scheme...
where you can make say.. ollie by by hiting the left stick down and right one to balance the board in mid air just like you would do a real ollie :P
but that would be really hardcore... :P
making those tricks would require alot of hand movement :D

This reminds me of a cartoon I saw on the paper. They're at the bowling alley. One guy said to the next, "I don't understand why he's so bad, he bowled a perfect score on the wii last night". Same thing goes here...when it's all said and done, it's just a game. Flicking your controller has nothing to do with skating...I hope it's fun.

If the game can truly give you a 1:1 depiction of your flailing arm, this game can rival...well no competition really.
I imagine alot of smashing of the wiimote "WTF, Ollie!, not nollie!, HEELFLIP!, NOT FUCKING KICKFLIP!".

The balance board is where it's at...maybe user the Wiimote to detect grabs...
Man, that sound better than a compound fracture anyday!

It's more life-like than moving your fucking thumbs to ollie. Which makes it the most realistic skating experience outside of actually getting off your fat ass and on a skateboard.
