Operation Flashpoint 2 Screen
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:20 PM on August 22, 2008
You know, we didn't post the last bunch of Operation Flashpoint 2 screens we came across, because they were taking the piss. Too much Photoshop, not enough polygons. This latest batch, however, are a little better. There's still plenty of shopping on show, but you can now see the slightly jaggy bits at the edge of the soldier's uniforms, proving at least that it's some kind of in-game videogame model and not some artist's impression of an in-game videogame soldier.

@Pepek: What world are you living in? I look outside and all I see is brown, brown, brown, gray, brown, and bloom, and I live in Hawaii!!! Brown sky, brown grass, brown glowing water, brown people, brown cars, brown buildings, brown air. Even the air is brown!

er, that should be "more accurate than you think." I should use the preview button.

Some of what makes it look retouched could be the in-game effects like depth of field and HDR and bloom lighting that people are using these days.
Sure, they may be touched up, but the shots may be more accurate than they think. In spite of your clear cynicism about games marketing, graphics engines can do some pretty crazy stuff these days.
(The older shots were definitely just concepts or target renders or whatever they're calling them these days.)

@Pepek: I think we can thank "Saving Private Ryan" for establishing that "war=brown and/or washed out".

It's brown. Why it's brown? The first one was GREEN because of GREEN grass and GREEN trees and GREEN bushes and GREEN camouflage to match the GREEN grass and GREEN trees and GREEN bushes.
Why is it BROWN? Why? Why is everything except Real Life BROWN? WHY? I never saw a BROWN sky when I looked ouf of the window.

Shopped to look exactly like the Kotaku site background. Very clever.

Now they look much better. Better than Kotaku brown, I mean.
Those graphics are so realistic my mind spawned two question inmediately:
- How is the kidney market right now?
- Is that the finger of the photographer in the second shot, at the bottom and to the right?

Here's hoping for less sucky multiplayer this time around.
Oh, and less superskilled AI.

Looks great. That M4 is having identity problems though.

Ah, I remember playing the old Flashpoint demo. Even though I never got to play the full game, I had fun. Especially killing myself via sprinting down a 80 degree slope.

@Black-Dog-Howls:
i'd prefer the term red. Red everything. red dirt mostly.

@1Mystic-G: And I can confirm that. I attended the OFP2 Presentation at GC yesterday and these shots are from the level they played. Basically this it what it looks like ingame.
I have some minor criticism though:
- nearby grass textures looks too pixelated
- far away ground textures look a little bit blurry (like we've seen it in Oblivion)
- Too much bloom in the sky - doesn't look particularly realistic when everything around the trees is flickering
Other than that it was a pretty good demonstration and I look forward to the game.

@Macko:
I second that, I seen the video aswell and the game looks exactly like that. I dunno why Kotaku is hinting towards at least some photoshop on these. It was even noted by the staff at CM that it was fully in-game.

@Pepek: Doesn't look all that brown to me. Maybe there's something up with your monitor. Though I'm guessing you're just exaggerating for effect. Nature isn't quite as green as you make it out to be. Especially not if it's during autumn. Also, as you can see in the screenshots, there's a lot of explosions going on and that has a tendancy to dirty things up and colour them.. brownish.

I hope this can run on a machine of these specs.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Radeon X1900XTX
2GB of RAM from Crucial, PC3200 (Yes, I'm that outdated)
A8N-E Motherboard
And two IDE Hard Drives.
Yeah, I suck, I don't have the income for a new machine. :(

@TetsuBo: Well, I do know that there is an 8 player limit in co-op mode and a 32 player limit in online modes; however, I think each player can have a squadron of AI players, so it won't be THAT bad compared to ArmA MP. Still, if you like huge war environments, ArmA 2 might be a better choice for you.

It's called a sepia filter... at least when using film.

I think the game looks amazing but considering there hasn't been much ingame floating about I worry. Sure there are the tech demos but come on there has to be more to this game then tech demos and screen shots.

Wasn't ArmA by the guys that did OFP? Did they come back for OFP2 or are they going with ArmA 2?

@dunetiger reads kotaku, seems pleased: Bohemia Interactive are making ArmA 2. OFP 2 is being developed by Codemasters, since they own the intellectual property of the title.
