Super Mario RPG Hits (PAL) Virtual Console
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on August 22, 2008
To recap: the PAL Virtual Consoles sometimes run a little thing called the Hanabi Festival. Means a bunch of rare, usually Japan-only games get made available for a limited time. Well, they've kicked off another one this week, and the update's a cracker. While one of the games has already made an appearance - Mario 2 - the other is a sight for sore eyes. It's Super Mario RPG. Yeah, Super Mario RPG. Which never, ever graced these southern shores, so if you'll excuse me, I'm off to catch up with my good friend 1996.

The first 2 Paper Mario games are among my favorite games of all time. The little that I've seen and played of this one didn't appeal to me in the same way (partly because of the slightly more obvious final fantasy influence), but I'm still excited to give it a good try on something that isn't an emulator.

Nice going for the PAL! I'm not big into RPG (except for Chrono Cross, which I love!), but I think I will pick this up when it reaches US shores.
Well, come to think about it. Maybe I'll wait till a slow moment arrives to play through this. These RPGS demand too much attention to my gaming ADD.

At Ad-hominem, Mr. Luke Plunkett is right.
Mario RPG is my favorite game of all time. I played the game on an emulator...I stopped playing after 15 minutes. There's just something about emulators that just suck the fun out of playing an original...(controllers, console, etc.)

@aeonpulse:
Solution; Buy one of those cheapo generic USB controllers.
Open it up and wire up the contacts on that controller to the contacts on an old snes controller (preferably a broken one, so as not to destroy a perfectly good one).
Then plug your pc into an old crt television.
Now play all those games, that you can't find on ebay, like you were playing them on an original console (although it is nice to have your save games on the original cartridges).

I recently started playing the Super Mario RPG for the first time since my sister's boyfriend brought over the game cartridge. I just need to fight the last boss but right now I'm busy trying to finish up the last world of Super Mario Bros 3 and fight the last two bosses in Metroid Prime 3.
I thought it was an easy game with simple but fairly enjoyable combat mixed in with some refreshing and light platforming and puzzle solving and I appreciated the level up system since it doesn't force ya to spend the time to level up every character separately.
The only part that really bothered me about the game was a part of the frustrating vine climbing section.

Posted 1:30 PM 22/8/08
Cool, good for Europe, probably. But is it the American or Japanese version? Or did they actually translate it? I can't really imagine Nintendo caring enough to translate any VC games into any language. Didn't Sin and Punishment still have Japanese menus? If it did, then they are lazy, lazy bastards, and there was no point of making it available in the first place. Also, why a limited time? Shit don't make sense.

Wow. I'm astonished that you've never owned an emulator, Luke.

So we get the original S&P release that the Japanese got and it's all in English.

For those complaining about emulators, I say this: Playstation to USB converter. Best $11 I ever spent. Plays SNES and PS1 games like a dream. And no crappy circular d-pads that are all too common on generic game pads to deal with. I've beaten MMX1-3, Star Ocean, and Secret of Mana with this. No control issues whatsoever. I originally beat SMRPG on the SNES, but I've been replaying it since using emulators. I love making save states before all my favorite parts in the game (Axem Rangers and Culex, anyone?)
Anywho, emulation aside, I'm glad to see SMRPG finally go to the PAL territories. This is IMO one of the best RPGs of all time. The more that get to play it the better, I say. It's too bad that the Paper Mario games decided to focus less on the RPG aspect. I don't think the world shall ever see a game quite like SMRPG. It certainly hasn't for the past 12 years.

@Ad-hominem: Thing with emulators, is I never finish the games I play on them. Not sure why. Having a console there makes me much more likely to return to it before, I don't know, my computer crashes and the memory gets wiped.
Another reason why I never finished Chrono Trigger, Tales of Phantasia, A Link to the Past...

This is a very strange turn of events... Nintendo giving Europe something they want.
I'm suspicious.
Nintendo's planning something.
Oh and to all people who were worrying about this disappearing like Mario 2 did;
"This and all Hanabi Festival titles will remain in the Wii Shop Channel even after the Festival has ended"
So I can wait untill my brother gets a GC controller... I am REALLY suspicious of Nintendo now though. What's next?
"Super Smash Bros Online Patch released!"
"Nintendo have announced they will be holding a special conference of their own called "Hardcore Autumn" to apologise for E3, and they have fired Cammie for gross fanboy negligence"
