The First FUEL Trailer
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 8:00 AM on August 23, 2008
A few days ago we told you about FUEL, the new racing game Codemasters announced at Leipzig. Today you get to see what it looks like in all of its glory. It kind of has the Motorstorm feel to it, but with a really cool climate twist and an insane 5,000 square mile playing area.

This looks like what I thought Motorstorm was going to be, but Motorstorm only gave you a track that was a bit wider than normal, while this one sounds like you can go wherever the heck you want. Very cool, if they can pull it off.

I'm curious about that freedom thing. It's really not exactly in the best interest of a racing game to provide absolute freedom is it? Unless of course instead of having laps around any given track, it's more like Burnout Paradise with goals set at one point and another, with players choosing their own routes. Burnout did it pretty well in a city enviroment, can these guys do it well given a vast and open landscape? Can they still manage to provide the skill based turns, the nail biting finishes of a really tight racing game?
In spirit it seems completely different from the lap based Motorstorm that I've come to love. But it could be the Motorstorm that I've always actually wanted.

Not sure if an open world is so much fun. For comparisons sake, look at Burnout. While for lots of players having an open world in Burnout Paradise was great, I felt it had destroyed the game. The series just lost it's focus after Burnout 3, which had memorable and perfectly arcady tracks because track designers could focus on exactly that.

I'm thinking it will be similar to the other sandbox racers out there like NFS Underground II and (reaching further back) Carmageddon II. On one hand you may have to drive around to reach waypoints where you will start a race, which has a defined route, but you can deviate from it as long as you hit the checkpoints.

What's the point of an open world racing game? In order to race you have to have a destination, and that destination has only 1 route which will be the quickest way to go.
It's also not the first open world 4x4 racing game, "1nsane" which was also by codemasters is the same concept, as well as 4x4 evo by terminal reality and Screamer 4x4 by Virgin all offered the whole "open world racing"

@Psudonym: Try 1nsane. It's an old PC game, with circular worlds (imagine a really, really small planet). Freedom worked alright in there. Gate hunts and pathfinder races are great.
I maintain my position. Looks like a next next next gen version of the aforementioned 1nsane... and that is indeed the tastiest gaming thought I've had so far this generation. Keep the open-endedness and put in great damage (heck, put some tuning options in there), and I'll be the first in line with a wad of cash, all doggy-eyed.

The only game you've seen with complete freedom? Oh well, GTA was released in 1997, he's lagging for 11 years. And, isn't Midnight Club a free roam racing game. Shut up, developer fuck. Don't you know what's Rockstar Games?
Fuel = no originality

@Hot-Devil-666: Burnout: Paradise is also free-roaming, although I'm not sure about the actual amount of square mileage. GTA doesn't really address the producer's point, though. Even if you factor San Andreas' huge square mileage, GTA is more about killing than racing.
That said, here's my biggest concern about this game: It will suffer the same thing that made me dislike Burnout: Paradise. I don't like the way you had to pay attention to the top of your screen for the game to tell you that you have to turn left at this intersection, etc... it made it possible for you to lose a race because you missed a turn. Call me a whiner, but I really hated that.
I like my racing to be a fast no-brainer. All about instinct and reflexes. None of this... remembering where or where not to turn bullshit.

Daaammnnn. Motorstorm 2 is going to have some MAJOR competition gameplay wise. The "1up" that Motorstorm 2 will have is 4 player split screen, but then again...5000 sqr miles kinda trumps that...

@BtownDesignGuy:
Actually I think by freedom they meant that you will not be restricted by streets. You don't really miss your turn... you sort of turn when the mood hits ya. :)
I think it could have limitless possibilities, especially if they let you set your own way-points for the races.

I find the "tornadoes" funny, because they aren't caused by "warming" but cooling. So if the globe were in fact to get warmer as a whole (the premise here), there wouldn't be any tornadoes.
Of course Global warming is equivalently silly. I mean, any theory that refuses to take into account cloud cover can't be taken seriously. Clouds are a fool proof climate stabilizer. If it gets warmer, more water evaporates, more clouds form, less sun gets through. And believe it or not, I'm really not over simplifying.
That and every years there are mass hysteria stories alternating between "global cooling" and "Global warming", Since 1910. Talk about evidence for the cyclical nature of the weather.
