Cosplay Runs Rampant At Games Convention
Posted by Mike Fahey at 5:20 AM on August 24, 2008
Anywhere you combine video games and large masses of the general public you are bound to find the odd cosplayer, but today at the Games Convention in Leipzig I not only found cosplayers - I found their nest. Entering the transparent dome building I've dubbed the Hall of Justice I only encountered one or two costumed con-goers, but once I got to the very back of the building I discovered an almost never-ending stream of them coming in through the back door. Following the trail, I discovered a veritable cosplayer hive. Resident Evil, Naruto, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and many I was too dizzy to correctly identify, buzzing about their business until they spied the telltale glint of light off a camera lens, at which point they'd drop everything and go into their defensive poses. If I had to pick a winner, I'd say it was definitely the main character from The World Ends With You, though after snapping the pic of Link not posing I felt I had betrayed the cosplayer-camera guy trust and had to flee.

@Deenight:
You expected no line for games once other gaming events reached E3 and TGS proportions? Just be lucky GC isn't up to 3+ hours of waiting for one game...yet.

Not a very imaginative bunch are they? Talim and Neku looked pretty good though.

I've always had a soft spot for Rikku (the girl from FFX, not the dude from KH), and the girl there shows why! The TWEWY cosplay is fantastic though, and the Jack Sparrow one is really good too.

The majority of them pictures show why Japan continues to be the best when it comes to cosplay.
Some of the costumes where good though, I just wish people would spend a bit more time making their costume and at least try to dress as someone they won't ruin the look of.

Still, I think the best cosplay ever is the TF2 team.

Nice to see more TWEWY cosplay emerge!
Props to the Jack Sparrow, somehow it's become a custom for each convention to have at least one ?
Maybe I'll visit Leipzig as well next year, is it open to general public ?

My only problem with most cosplays is that people cosplay as someone they do not look like AT ALL. The most awesome cosplay I saw was some kinda large, almost balding guy who dressed up as Link's "dad" from A Link to the Past. He was even slumped on the floor. Awesome :3

As long as you asked for their permission to take the photos, you're all good. The one thing cosplayers hate is "ninja shots", basically where they're not even doing anything and you take a fast camera shot of them while not ready.
Anyway, good photography etiquette for people in the future at conventions - always ask the person for a photo first. Advice from a Comic-Con picture taker veteran.
BTW - that's a nice Talim. Dunno why there isn't any Filipino girls cosplaying her more though...

I never understood cosplaying, it usually ends up terrible and more than anything it draws an annoying crowd of people that people are forced to walk around. On top of that, ive never seen even one good instance of cosplay in picture or in person.....(yes, I even hated halloween as a child)
If anything they should ban cosplaying from conventions as they distract from the real point of the convention. Additionally, in many cases when the public is obviously disturbed(ie. when fat men are dressing up in miniskirts and trying to act like little girls) they should be arrested and charged with indecent exposure.
Some poeple will argue that cosplaying doesnt hurt anyone and that its all in good fun, but its also a nuisance with no logical meaning behind it to a lot of us.

What is with all the hate on all the pictures, seriously? The costumes all range from fairly good to great.
So skinny people have all the rights in the world to run around half naked, but people who are at all "chubby" have to cover themselves up and hide so as to not offend anyone's eyes? If someone's face is "ugly" to you, they can't ever cosplay?
As a guy who's worked his ass off to lose 60 pounds and gain some muscle in the last year and a half, let me just say I know what it's like to be treated differently because of how you look, and it really sucks. I'm shocked at all the bile I've found on these pictures. Really, Kotaku Commenters? Has the media really brainwashed you so much that you shun anyone who wouldn't fit into a Calvin Klein photo shoot? Pathetic.
Before you analyze the splinter in others' eye, take the log out of your own.

This con called Anime Evolution was happening at Vancouver (Canada) this weekend. I went to check out their stores for robots (don't "watch manga" myself) and ran into a truly amazing RE4 shopkeeper. He never said "come back anytime" though, and I felt a little ripped off.
What else, uh, a great Sol Badguy, except they didn't let him bring his sword (it was metal and Vancouver RCMP are dicks).

@SpishackCola: didn't expect to wait 1hour for playing rock band 1...
the last time i went to the gc i had never to wait... maybe because it was the friday or i was just a lucky bastard or most possible because it was 3 years ago and the gc wasnt as popular as it is now, but i had never to stay in a line for any of the games i wanted to play... good old times...
but i had no big problem with waiting in line but the whole time i was like "hey lets watch whats up at capcom/sony/etc maybe theres no line" and sometimes i was right, sometimes i was wrong... i think patience is my biggest weakness and what made my gc experience not the best in years... :)

I noticed half of the photo comments go something like, "Is that a guy or a girl?" :p
Not that I know much about cosplay, but if I was a chick into cosplay, I'd do a female version of a male character. I haven't seen it done often, and it would at least add some creativity and personal twist to it. Other way around though? I don't think that'd work so well.

@AlexDitto: Thanks, exactly what I was thinking. I'm blessed to have been thin and good-looking for most of my life, but the bile and hate (especially the sexist bias of it, it's way worse to be a less-than perfect female obviously) is disgusting. It would be one thing if this was Oh No They Didn't, but I expect more from commenters on Kotaku.
That said: I'd been considering Neku for Halloween, and this is inspirational. Unfortunately, my wife (the one who knows how to sew) can't understand why I'd want to be such an obscure video game character...
