Killzone 2 Multiplayer Hands On - Five Good Things
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:30 AM on August 24, 2008
I spent the better part of an hour today playing through several rounds of Killzone 2 multiplayer at Sony's Games Convention 2008 headquarters, and rather than spend several paragraphs lying about how well I did, I figured I'd just round up the finer points of the session and present them here in easy-to-ingest numbered form.
5.Combat Itself: Killzone 2 multiplayer manages to maintain the fluid speed of the single player experience without sacrificing the looks that get the game featured in so many "look how pretty this game is" magazine spreads. Combat takes place at the perfect speed for me - not Unreal quick, but not Lost Planet slow. Just right.
4. Spawning Mechanics: Dying in Killzone 2 multiplayer brings up a map of possible spawn points, as well as a camera displaying what is going on at each locations, allowing you to pick the location that best fits your play style. When playing with a squad, players can choose to respawn on their squad leader to get right back into the action. Very handy when your squad leader finds himself all alone guarding an objective with tons of enemy inbound.
3. The Badge System: The Badge system represents the different classes you can play in multiplayer, from scout to engineer to medic. Each of the six badges have their own skill sets. Where Killzone 2 makes things interesting is that you can combine the power of two badges to create your own class based on your own particular play style. Want an engineer with healing skills? A stealthy soldier with a bazooka? Knock yourself out!
2. Dynamic Missions: Instead of playing one mission type and then waiting for the new map to load before beginning another, Killzone 2 features dynamic missions, which allows you and your friends to play through multiple game types on one map without loading.
1. Fully Destructible Toilets: Yes, I checked.
While I never was a big fan of the original game, Killzone 2's multiplayer is definitely an impressive effort. Of course the experience of playing with 8 people in the same room when you can yell at them when they team kill you is one thing, and true online multiplayer is another, but they are off to a very entertaining start.

While I do like the game as it is, I still have negative thoughts about it for my own eprsonal reasons. I know I'll be bashed and hated for saynig this, but Im all for complete innovation, not just upgrades to what we have. Better graphics, better multiplayer? There's a limit to how far it can go, and no matter what, a couple years from now or even sooner, KZ2 will be outdone. That is a guarantee. However, making a game perfrom completely different from others is something I believe lasts longer than simple changes to a simple system. Portal? Quite possibly will never die. Unreal? Mechanics in that game can barely be matched.
Is the game going to be fun? I have no doubts about it. But I'd much rather have a game that's just as fun or even a bit less, but lasts longer than Killzone 3. People remember classic movies for what they did, even though newer, brighter, better looking ones are copming out left and right. I want Killzone 2 to be a classic, not just played then thrown away.

@atrimus: I really liked KZ single player experience. If they can match or exceed that, then it's going to be fun time come February. I was only concerned about the multi-player aspect of the game but this preview has eased my concerns.

can't wait. it's absolutely gorgeous, and from some of the previews i've read KZ2 handles weapons better than any other fps. if Guerrilla can deliver a solid single-player campaign, then this could very well be a contender for the best fps crown.

@Morpork: Yea you'll always hear that. To them, just because KZ1 wasn't AWESOME, KZ will fail miserably on its face. People should take the game as it is and not compare it to past efforts of the developer.

@Passa: Really? Which war did you go that was colorful?
I mean the language overheard in war is certainly colorful.
The locals displaced certainly are colorful.
The areas surrounding the battlefield are certainly colorful if they last long enough.
But the actual battlefield with its layer of floating dust and gunpowder from constant explosions, littered with debris, disarrayed and chaotic is anything but colorful.

Fully-destructible toilets? Pah. In HL2 DM, you could use toilets as weapons. Well, gravity-gun-throwable weapons, anyway.
On the other hand, gameplay that isn't as fast as HL2 DM is definitely a plus.

Ah! Here it is:

It's worded kind of funny, so I can't figure out if it's talking about split-screen multiplayer or online campaign co-op, but here's hoping it's the former. Or both. I'll take both.

Posted 2:43 AM 24/8/08
Uhh.. while these are nice 'features', they're far from new and I can't possibly see how they would increase expectations for the game.
You can spawn with your squad leader, wow. Pretty sure BF2 had that all covered back in 2005.
It doesn't reload the map when changing rounds, well personally I'd be more interested if they had ultra fast loading of new maps between rounds but anyway..
You can customise your load-out kit, done countless times. They did give it a pretty new name though, I hate it when devs do that ('deathmatch' sounded perfectly fine Bungie.)
The game still has that major glaring issue with the art-style too. War is colourful folks. Personally I think the visual design in general is rather piss poor, almost worse than Gears from what I've seen.

Bioshock, Halo, Metroid Prime.

@Passa: "War is colourful folks."
I nearly pissed myself when I read that. Uhhhp, wait... yep, there it goes.
"Like, seriously you guys, have you ever been at war? Ya'know, in THE SHIT? I'm talkin' knee-deep in THE SHIT! No? Well then lemme tell you a little something about what it looks like. It looks like... after a rain storm. You know, when the rainbow comes out? There's Charlie runnin' around everywhere, your buddy next to you just got blown to bits, and the sky looks like a box of crayola motherfuckin' crayons man! It's some SERIOUS SHIT, man!"
I suppose I'll state the obvious and point out that the fictional war being depicted in this game does not take place on Earth. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you haven't been to Helghan during war times (I hear it's lovely during the Spring), but maybe you have something you'd like to share with the rest of us...?

@R0YB0T:
They're doing their best for the game to look the same from single player to multiplayer. Having to render two separate perspectives at the same time would be too much and do a ton of slowdown.
Besides, I haven't used split screen on a game in a LONG time. It feels like an outdated mechanic and I hate halving my field of view. While it's great to have the option and all, it's not like it's the one feature that will make or break a game.

@snakepliskin: Yeah, you're never going to win either way.
To me, the color in Halo 3 fits. It wouldn't fit in a typical war game, but it's not really a war game, and it's not too focused on realism.
For Killzone 2, the game is a lot more gritty and focused on the realistic war experience, so I agree, I think the color scheme works.
I'm not going to hold my breath, BUT there's a small possibility that some of the other levels that haven't been shown yet are slightly more... uh... vibrant.

I'd like to see them try to stretch the environment of Helghan, and try to show small traces of what would stand out as beautiful scenery. I've seen all the game footage and bought any mag tgat had kz2 articles lol(btw I'm really really looking forward to this game). But I thin kif they can pull off showing small bits of natural beaty of Helghan, it's do a world of wonders. Now I'm not talking rainbows here, perhaps a stage could be almost permanently lit up purple and blue by lightning intensley heavy lightning storms or something. For anyone who has been out in a storm like that, it's actually quite amazing to see, despite it's chaos. As far as the building structures go, I think Guerrilla backed themselves into a wall where it's going to take alot for the urban scenery to really stand out.
I'm thinking back to the original KZ2 gameplay trailer (not the grpahical target one, last year's E3 one). A the start, the skies look so bright and vibrant, blue sky and white clouds everywhere before they descend into the battle..
Just saying, there's gotta be some beauty on that planet somewhere, and if they don't go the extra mile to show it off it's gonna be some disappointing.

do you watch movies? or read books? or listen to music?
you will find that in all 3 mediums, there are varying styles. everyone under the sun is entitled to design their games as they see fit. the last time i checked, i don't remember anyone pissing on halo for being a bright and colorful space marine shooter. halo has stuck to its art direction for better or worse, there people who hate it and people who like it. The closest FPS to realism we have seen close to war is Call of Duty, which honestly is not even a perfect portrayal if you even watch war documentaries. Hollywood does not do war justice, its not this colorful fantasy that evryone makes it out to be. your argument about realism is quite moot.

@thereapersson: @Hugh Jass: Really? I'm pretty sure Kotaku isn't against the PS3 or Sony itself. Heck I even remember Crecente's impression of LittleBigPlanet. He was gushing all over it. I literally thought he was going to be dry-humping it (not that it's not warranted mind you. LBP looks amazing). And people here were calling him |Sony Uber fanboyz!" or something to that effect.
The only editor here who posts flack about Sony is Luke. Even then, he posts flack about everything. =)

I'm rather impressed with what Guerilla has produced. They've come fairly close to the pre-rendered target video and have shown rather smooth and immersive gameplay. It appears that I will indeed be purchasing this title on day one.

i really want this. alot.
tho as much as i did enjoy killzone 1, it had a good number of problems. but with the amount riding on this for sony, not to mention the immensely large budget it must have, plus what i've seen so far, i have very high hopes.

@Passa: "The game still has that major glaring issue with the art-style too."
Ha! Ha ha ha! You seem to know a lot about this, so why didn't Guerrilla hire you as their art director? What a bunch of morons!

Physics and graphics are just awesome.
Screw the people calling me a graphic whore - better engine with improved physics and visuals = much better immersion in the game.

@muu:
Do you mean the MGS coverage where they couldn't quit beating the drum about the NDA? DO you mean the MGS coverage where this site decided to publish an article the likes of which I have never seen published for another game called "Lowest MGS Score yet" Kotaku didn't seem to care how little truth was involved in allegations concerning MGS4. They don't even recant these things but often just pretend they never happened. Damage done.

@Hugh Jass: Yes I do visit it daily.Heck, I refresh the site every few minutes. I don't comment on all the posts though.
I really don't notice anything concerning the PS3. I mean yeah there was the whole HOME fiasco but other than that, they've been trashing Wii's waggle and other things. Maybe it's just me and I don't see it but I don\t think whatever I say here will change your mind. =D
In any case, this post is something positive for a PS3 game. So that's something to be happy about right?

@tehFluffz: Exactly. Good gameplay only takes you so far before you realize you've been spoiled by all the next-gen technology out there and actually want your games to play AND look great at the same time.
It's why I don't own a Wii. Well, that and the fact that its game library consists of 98% shovelware. If I want to play games with outdated-looking graphics, i'll pop in a few PS2 or Dreamcast titles for nostalgia.

I love the idea of the spawn mechanics. It sounds like what was done in the Battlefield games, but it worked well because then you didn't always spawn in the middle of a big clusterfuck.
CoD 4 and Resistance always pissed me off because it was always "Spawn, live for about 10 seconds, get offed, repeat until you quit the game out of frustration"
I really can't wait to see how this game fares when it is finally released. I'm glad they have delayed it thus far because it really gave them time to see what the competition was doing and then see how they can improve on it and make it more fluid.

I'm very interested in seeing how the dynamic missions pan out.But the multiple spawn points are probably inspired by Battlefield Bad Company's excellent multiplayer.

Wasn't too impressed with the first one and this one dissapointed me when they knocked it down a notch from the CGI. The story still seems like it'll be basic but I do think there's a lot of good stuff happening with the game too. I love the choice of spawn points, the graphics are still good and it'll be a fun FPS most likely.

I wonder what the frame rate for this game is???? It looks amazing so I hope it doesn't slow down like most online games do when there is a lot of action... *cough*Rainbow Six Vegas 2*cough*....
R6V2 is a pathetic attempt at a game I'm sure that Killzone will do it right I mean we still have to wait like half a year for this game.

@Passa: "The game still has that major glaring issue with the art-style too. War is colourful folks. Personally I think the visual design in general is rather piss poor, almost worse than Gears from what I've seen." LOL Passa obviously has fond memories of the Napoleonic campaigns! Why don't the ISA wear bright red and the HGH could wear bright blue? With feathers in their hats! How about reading about the Somme,Passchendaele, the Russian Front. How colourful were they? And you feel that the art direction of Killzone 2 is only slightly better than Gears of War? Well that's excellent then as most people I know think that GoW is a beautifully designed and stylised game. I wonder what you do creatively that gives you the right to judge these games as harshly as you do?
