Do You Have Questions About Star Trek Online?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 4:00 PM on August 26, 2008
Developer Cryptic has answers. In the first round of Star Trek Online developer Q&As, lead designer Al "Captain Geko" Rivera, executive producer Craig "Zinc" Zinkievich, and their nicknames answer probing questions. For example: How much of the game will stick to the canon? Captain Geko answers:
Every series and movie is considered canon, and we are staying very true to this in our development. Star Trek is rich with lore and history, and there is a great deal of material to build upon as we move into the 25th century with Star Trek Online. We are working with CBS to ensure that everything we create is true to Trek and makes sense. We know that fans want to play Star Trek Online because they want to explore the Star Trek universe, and we are striving to deliver as authentic an experience as possible. Our team has seen all the shows and movies and we're watching them again every single day. We are also studying other soft canon resources such as novels and comics. From those, we are looking for inspiration and references to further enhance our game. Where it makes sense, we will include some soft canon elements in Star Trek Online as well.More questions and answers over at the official site. No more nicknames, though.

More importantly, can I be the captain of a garbage scow? When Klingons insult my ship I can be indifferent about it.

@Grandreaper999: Theirs a really old one on PC thats sorta like the point and click adventures, like sam & max, full throttle, indiana jones.. etc.
Its ultra fun
the only drawback is about the 12th stage, where a loss results in loss of your fourteenth and fifteenth spinal disc's (IRL), which is why the game was pulled from shelves prematurely

Why didn't they make a Battlestar Galactica Online instead?

"Every series and movie is considered canon" I don't exactly understand how they do this since the original series, next gen and movies contradict each other. I mean, Are they somehow going to make Zefram Cochrane both an earth man and an Alpha Centaurian? *snort*

@wanion: Oh, wait, I have one: Will it feature evil bearded Spock? Otherwise, I'll pass.
Although if he goes crazy and smacks Kirk like a bitch, then I might be interested. This will probably be a TNG era game though won't it?
Star Trek games always seem to be a weird proposition, since the series is typical not about action as it is about exploration of space...and the human condition. Usually it's the crew finding some special effects blob that they can't kill with normal weapons and makes people fall out of their seats until they realize all the monster really wants...is love. Or something lame like that.
Plus most of the games seem to focus on Klingons & Romulons, I say bring on the space monsters.

I've poked around the Star Trek games library over the years and never seen a good star trek game, ever. Can anyone tell me if there were any I missed? (if that sounded kinda insincere, sorry, it was an honest question/statement)

f I was going to be stranded on a desert island and could only bring one fanfic story with me, this would be it. Flowering is a beautifully written and emotionally powerful tale of sixteen year old Elim Garak's sexual awakening in a boarding school for intelligent Cardassians who excessively question the wisdom of the state. Ms. Wotton's creation is not only an insightful examination of a cruel society in its death throes, but a sizzling piece of erotica set at an all male boarding school (my personal kryptonite). Run, don't walk, and I promise you will never think of Preloc's The Never-Ending Sacrifice the same way again. (Elizabeth Helena, Feb 19, 2003)

...please enjoy.

@xxBetaMaxxx:
Unconvincing, repeated claim from post like this that you "doesn't care" is failing to conceal the fact that you actually care too much. If you don't care, then just stay the f*** away from the article and show how much you don't care in a serene silence instead of coming out like a complete douche.
STO is one of the few games I'm really really looking forward to. There's quite a few designer's choices so to speak which will determine the path this MMO will take, and a few of them has been answered here. Thanks for this article!

@FranUnFine: "The second game that is not ST 25th Anniversary"... does this mean I've got a clichéd opinion? Aw. :(

@Grandreaper999: Star Trek 25th Anniversary is still the best Star Trek game ever in my eyes. It was released early 90s (1966+25=1991?) and was on one hand a starship combat simulator, and on the other, a point & click adventure starring the usual members of the away team on the planets & ships they beamed to.
(And you could kill the redshirt in nearly every mission!)
I wish they'd make something similar now. Especially for Wii - I want wii remote controls for phaser & tricorder already!
I fear Star Trek Online is going to go the way of all the recent games... over-emphasising combat (MMO grind for Trek? Ugh.) and having none of the moral spirit of the original Trek in it.

@Grandreaper999: Well, there was Birth of the Federation, a rather decent Master of Orion clone that I liked. Was really funny on LAN parties.
The second game that is not ST 25th Anniversary is Starfleet Command, which is a clone of a board game IIRC.
I never played Bridge Commander, so I can't comment on that, but people seem to like it.

I still think before you can earn the right to have your own ship, you should be required to level up by faithfully dying as a red shirt security guard a few times in some other captain's pointless boarding/landing party.

@wanion: I agree man, bearded spock with "The Agonizer" was the shit!
Besides, I wouldn't want to play as some "goody two shoes" in a World that is predetermined to be "all about peace".
Screw that noise! I want carnage, chaos, plunder and destruction! And I don't want it in some Rick Berman nonsense that has been plaguing that franchise since.... oh, forever lately.
Maybe some Wrath of Khan vindictive, blood-thirsting would do; BUT I WANT BEARDED SPOCK IN THIS GAME TOO, DAMMIT!!!
Final thought on this from me:
Kirk: KHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNN!

@AdmiralJonB: The starship combat in that was atrocious. Maybe I didn't 'get' it or my PC couldn't handle it, but all it ever seemed to do was put the Enterprise wobbling centre screen and occasionally flash up a Romulan warbird to destroy you.
Bridge Commander was pretty good. No point-and-click adventure though.
Armada II was fun for the RTS elements as well. Although again, all combat. But that was ok, because for 2/3 of the game you were playing as Klingons and then Borg.

As long as the game is true to Trek and is made to appeal to Trek fans and casual gamers moreso than your typical mmo powergamer, then i'll be there.I'd much rather see a Trek mmo than was fun to play and not merely another scifi/fantasy mmo timesink.I played the original 7 years and was part of the original beta, and have since stopped played mmo's altogether because they are basicly all the same with only the wrapping being different(time+items="leetness" formula).I've been there, done that and learned that it gets old VERY fast.Hopefully Cryptic keeps STO as far away from that formula as they possibly can.

I have a question: how much will this game cost? MMO's always scare me away with their pricing. I hate monthly fees, but I can tolerate one that's really low in the $5 to $8 range. Some of the fees for MMO's out there right now are absolutely outrageous.
@CrashOverride777: "Why didn't they make a Battlestar Galactica Online instead?"
Because that show was terrible decades ago and it's still terrible today. =P

@Grandreaper999: I don't think anyone mentioned Elite Force.
Basically a reskin of the Quake III engine with Star Trek: Voyager. Short, but fun, and you could wander the halls of the ship to some extent. It was also pretty visually impressive at the time, although it felt more Quake than Star Trek here and there. Didn't play the second one - can't remember if it got good or shoddy reviews.
And, like every one said, the point and click game from the early 90's was pretty awesome.
But true, unlike Star Wars, the Trek Universe hasn't been as fortunate with its games. That is to say, there's been no KOTOR or Jedi Knight/Dark Forces in all its time.

This interests me a bit, though I haven't played a good Star Trek game since Armada II (though I played the HELL out of that one.)
From what I've seen so far, the game needs more Bat'lath.

@Guild_Navigator:
Well Alpha Centaurians have never been stated in canon as aliens. So why couldn't he have been a Terran, and also happened to live on Alpha Centauri (assuming there is a habitable planet out there)? It's a bit of a retcon, but nothing directly contradictory. There are plenty of more egregious ones anyways. But they remain nitpicky.

@sir_carrot: I really liked the weapon balance in Elite Forces multilayer. I don't think I've ever found a rocket launcher that was quite as fun as the micro torpedo launcher.
Elite force 2 was ok. Story was not as fun, and weapons not nearly as memorable. But you could explore a lot more of the ship (the Enterprise E this time) and Star Fleet Academy in San Fransisco. but you're still mostly battling big bug looking things.
There's some really eye rolling moments, like when you figure out that this woman (think of 7 0f 9 times 2) wearing an impossible bikini is really a scientist...

Since "Every series and movie is considered canon" my question would be "What does God need with a starship?"
Even Roddenberry thought Star Trek V was "apocryphal at best," so why elevate it back to canon status here?
