Rayman Raving Rabbids Arse Party Impressions
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 3:40 AM on August 26, 2008
At least one Ubisoft staffer out there thinks I have a nice arse. (It's not Jade... as far as I know.) That commendation was handed out during my cheeks-on time with the forthcoming Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party, as I virtually surfed a dead cow via the Wii Balance Board.
After suffering through the rather mundane Wii-mote waggling "party" game pictured — it involved four Rabbids in a whack-duel to the death armed with toilet plungers — we plopped down on the balance board, controllers in hand.
The butt steering mechanics worked pretty well, as we slalomed down a slight grade, leaning left and right to steer our livestock, occasionally jumping off ramps to pull off cattle tricks. These were simply two-handed jerks of the remote and nunchuk. It was good for a laugh.
And if that's all you need from your Wii software, the next Rayman Raving Rabbids entry will probably fit the bill. The balance board isn't required, but will probably help make the fifty-ish mini-games feel that much more varied.
The concept of yet another mini-game collection being hastily brought to the Wii may not light a fire under you, but at least Ubisoft is putting some effort into Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party's presentation. The television theme is well implemented via micro-games within mini-games based on commercial breaks. Wii waggling in short bursts with friends and family, should that be up your alley, looks to be well represented here.
And we'll leave it at that.

This post needs less pictures of this terrible game and more of McW's supposedly nice ass.

So, wait, it's a mini-game-filled spin-off of a series already consisting entirely of mini-games?
You've gotta hand it to them, it takes true vision to look at the Wii's Rayman titles and think: "You know what this game lacks? Mini-games. Let's get to work, people: there is a void to fill, and we're the only ones who can get the job done."

Sounds awfully underwhelming. You sound like you just sat through an award winning documentary on a subject you couldn't care less for.

@Antiterra: What did you expect? RTS?

@Chadders: My point is: why not just call it Raving Rabbids 3, since it's obviously more of the same with a few tweaks?
The Wii games themselves are a party-game spin-off of Rayman, and now they're making a spin-off of the spin-off which looks damn close to said spin-off. My head is spinning.
Cash cow, meet Ubisoft: they'll be tending to your udder.

@McWhertor:
Are you sure it's a Ubi staffer and not CliffyB?
Ass-surfing? What the? They should make a pron game for this! Yeah that would sell boatloads!

@Antiterra: If your attitude was a persistent one, and not just the shell of your personal problem with Raving Rabbids or Ubisoft - you'd hate the game industry all-together and would not be here ^___^

Steering with my butt... >_> I think I'll fail with that.
Although on the other hand, few short bursts of laughs with family and friends is just what the Wii is to me now... Now if only I can find a damn Wii Fit anywhere for retail.

@Antiterra: Yeah, what igl said. I can deal with this, it's the Street Fighter 'numbering' system I can't deal with. The only ones who really got it right were Clayfighter devs. ;)

@krztov: Yeah, same, I assumed it was cos I got first post on 3 articles, and the hand of Fate conspired to rob my diatribes of their first post attention. :(

You know, Mike...putting the name "Jade" in any post guarantees at least 1000 plus click-throughs. Just saying.

@jonathan.: Actually the rabbits are still cute as hell, even if their game sucks. And most people don't give a toss about Rayman (and have never even heard of him). Sorry but that's the breaks...
@Antiterra: Probably because Raving Rabbids 3 is a crappy name whereas TV Party is at least fractionally more distinctive than a 3? I.e. probably the same reason they called the last Zelda 'Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess' instead of 'Legend of Zelda: 37b'.

The saddest part is Rabbids were a good idea as characters.
Then the REHASHAN began.

...I'm a huge RTS lover, a platformer devotee, love "action RPGs" (I hate that name but by that I mean Zelda, Oblivion, etc.), suck at but enjoy FPSs, and I absolutely LOVE the Raving Rabbids series. My only gripes about them stem from the brevity and occasional controller issues.
I really can't comprehend the hate on minigame sets. Some of them are terrible, of course, but why as a genre are they so vilified? They're fun as hell.

I own, and love, the first two Rabbid games. But this one? I don't know. I don't feel a need to buy Wii Fit, and how many Rabbids games do I really need? I mostly only pull them out when company is over and not interested in Smash Brothers.
I still love the trailers for the Rabbids games. :)

I'll be happy if this ends up being a good party game.
There are too many party games on the Wii, but only two or three of them are actually good.

Y'know, if you look at the RRR2 boxart, you'll see that Rayman is even FURTHER away in the picture than it's predecessor.
Likely you'll have to open the case to find Rayman pressed into the manual in a squished comedic fashion.
Whatever happened to ...y'know...Rayman? Wasn't he one of the big faces of PS1 in the day?

Rabbids will never stop being freaking hilarious.
That said, watching the commercials is more fun than playing the games.

@Antiterra: For the same reason the Burnout series, along with plenty of others, stopped putting numbers after the name: marketing voodoo. This doesnt seem like a spin-off of a spin-off, just a sequel of one.
