SFIV Hits NYC Arcade, Other Cities, Too
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 4:30 AM on August 26, 2008
There have been sightings of Street Fighter IV arcade cabinets popping up over the last week in North American cities. We received a few tips from people claiming the Chinatown Fair arcade in Manhattan got their very own cabinet, too. So since I never have anything to do on the weekend, I figured I'd take a stroll over there to see for myself. Well, sure enough, they did! It certainly wasn't official looking, but nonetheless, it works and I got a chance to sit down and get a few rounds in. So how does it play? Let's just say it'll make your eyes orgasm.
It's been a good 10 years since I last stepped foot in an arcade. The two I spent a lot of my time in during my youth had closed a long time ago. So when I walked into the Chinatown Fair arcade yesterday to check out Street Fighter IV for the first time in person, it was a bit of a sensory overload with all the machines lined up in a tight space. There were a surprisingly large amount of people there on a Sunday afternoon, and even most of the machines were all occupied, but of course the biggest crowd swarmed around the recently installed SFIV machines.
I walked up and wrote my name down on the list being passed around the group to organise when it was your turn. I had about four matches to go before it was mine, so I had some time to check out the gameplay a bit and study the move list someone printed out, but I knew I was still going to get my arse handed to me.
What first struck me visually about this game is the colour and art style. Yeah, I've seen screenshots and movies just like everyone else, but when you see this game in person on a nice monitor, the colour and animation really stand out. The little facial animations from fighters taking hits or performing combos is an amazing detail, and then there's great lighting cast upon characters from a setting sun or torches in the background. It just looks really polished, and I think this game will still look amazing 10 years from now.
I played it safe and picked Ryu; my opponent picked Ken. As soon as the first round started, I knew I was in trouble. I couldn't pull off any moves and my opponent was beating me mercilessly. I go down without getting many hits in at all. The second round I faired much better in. I got off a few Shoryukens and Hadoukens, but still lost. But hey, I got my opponent's life bar down about half way! Some random spectator jokingly said it best. "Dude, you looked like you were playing as if you were blindfolded!" I'll take that as a compliment.
It's tough for me to say how the controls are simply because I don't play many fighting games. I can say that everything seemed tight and responsive. The sticks they had were a bit small for my liking, but I think any concerns those of you had about the controls need not to worry.
So there you have it. Street Fighter IV in the arcade. I wish I had more time to sit down and play it like I would at a demo session. I didn't get a chance to try out the new characters, and I never got a good run down on how the Focus Attacks work like Fahey did, either. But I still came away extremely impressed with this game. If you have an opportunity to play it at an arcade, I suggest you do so. I still think it's still the best atmosphere to play fighting games in since everyone respects each other (no trash-talking XBL idiots!) and you can learn techniques and styles from other players.
Event Hubs has been updating a list of arcades getting SFIV cabinets. Check out what they have so far below and look around at any of your local places to see if any came in. Also take a look at some other pictures I snapped if you feel so inclined.

Hey Suntorytime, I noticed the Ratio issue at Replay in Brisbane city too-!
Think maybe it's way the Replay staff set it up? I haven't seen our (Brisbane specific) complaint anywhere else. Also, doesn't it look a LOT more aliased than any screens/video etc you've seen.
I think something's up there

I played the one at CHQ in Metrotown a few days ago. I didn't even know it was there. I was dragged there by my family to do some shopping and I spent the entire time in the arcade. I then saw SFIV and was like, "!?". I don't remember how much it cost, but I think it was like a dollar. It seemed pretty good to me, but I didn't really know what I was doing or how to do any special moves.

Still haven't tried this but man am I itching for some SF goodness. Granted, I most probably will have my ass handed to me.
The arcade set-up there looks sweet!
@Jim Reilly:
I think you should've went with Guile. the charge move is easier if you haven't played fighting games in a long while. Or Blanka. Just jump around and use his electric shock or something.

For those in Houston TX, Planet Zero debuted the game on August 21st (last Thursday.) Google the address. There was a huge crowd there with the sound routed through their speaker system and 2 huge projector screens duplicating what was on the arcade cabinets.
I didn't get to play because of the long, long wait list but did watch for a while. The graphics and attention to detail was top-notch. However, almost everyone played as Ken which got annoying. I was excited to see proficient Blanka and Guile users.
I'm not too sure who much it costs because it uses a card/points system. It cost about 20 points which I have no idea what that converts to in real money.

The one in Metrotown (Vancouver) at CHQ costs 3 tokens or $0.75.
I played a few games and am an avid SF fan. At work we have Alpha 3 here, so I'm used to that one the most, but SF4 sure seems like it took most hints from SF2 and SF3:Third Strike.
The 'Focus' attack system is basically like the parrying system of SF3. If you tap the two middle strength punch and kick buttons at the right time, you will perform the classic parry. So far, this is not doable in the air. If you hold the buttons down, however, then release them you will perform that focus attack with the happy ink trail. The longer you hold it, the better the results. If held long enough, it will stun your opponent leaving them free to pummel.
What I thought was interesting was the Super system this time around. You have your standard super (SF2 style: a bar fills up when you attack or get hit to allow you to perform it. Only one super per character) and EX moves (SF3 style: 2 buttons instead of one increases damage and makes for a moment of invulnerability).
That's all good and well but now they have the 'ultra' supers... which are interesting. Those are the really epic crazy moves you see on all the trailers where the camera pulls in. Effectively, each ROUND you will have the opportunity to use this move. Whenever you take damage it will fill up. You will have about 1/4 to 1/2 of your health left and you will be able to absolutely decimate someone who might have (up until that point) had a perfect on you. They said they wanted to make the 'comeback' something everyone can pull off... and now with a simple double fireball motion and three buttons simultaneously, you will have your second chance at victory.
Overall, it plays pretty smoothly, but the priorities and hit boxes are like they were in SF2... It takes some getting used to for sure.
I think SF fans will enjoy its many intricacies and mastering the 'focus attack' system.
When it comes out on consoles I'll be more inclined to study it. My wallet enjoys a $60 investment rather then the hundreds I'd be spending at the arcade.

Played it in Japan last week. I'm not sure if the move from sprite based to 3-D has changed something in the game or in my perception. When I played my timing was way off. I played SSF2T everyday in College when it came out for about 3 years and the various iterations so I am fairly versed in SF.
I think since there was limited animation in the sprite based (Most attacks were 3-4 frames of animation at the most) one you got a certain feel for timing attacks and combos. This is to some degree thrown out as the animation in the 3d version is all there there is a frame of animation for every frame of video. Doing wake up DPs with ryu was very disconcerting to me.
Jumping in which was an integral part of the game also feels very different. It feels very slow and cumbersome. It doesn't feel like SF. Again I'm not sure if this is because of a game design decision or if it is because of there is a animation now for every frame of movement.
Maybe I'll get used to it but right now I'm looking forward more to SSF2T-HD

I went to check out sf4 at my local arcade today, they had it since last week. I'm suprised it's in such short quantity in the USA considering I'm in Brisbane, Australia. It's expensive at $2 a game, 2 rounds per player but that seems like std new release price for this arcade.
Oddly enough, the screen ratio looked off to me. They were using the Samsung LCD with the bottom curved base, which I assume supports native 16:9, but characters just look short and fat, especially Sagat.

I know most of you are giving a lot of flak for the price of SFIV over there. All I have to say to you is to just be patient, since at this rate, the fact that there's a list to sign up just to play, and the fact that it's at least 10-15 folks crowding up the machine when I last went Friday night as well as in any given time, it should make back the money spent on the cabs in no time, and eventually, it should get knocked down to 50 cents. So yeah, it might cost an arm and a leg now, but it'll be cheaper in due time. Besides, since I play DDR religiously over there, I'm used to paying shitloads of money for DDR there, Extreme's still a buck and SuperNOVA got their price knocked down from $2 to $1.50 almost a year ago.

Holy moly. Playing on your own lcd(is that LCD) screen like that is too awesome. I've never seen that in Montreal. Only seen in those during competitions. Damn, long time since I started going arcadin'.

Massachusetts/Rhode Island/NH:
Tokyo Game Action in Winchendon MA will be getting a SF4 machine VERY soon. Should be before the end of this month, early next month the latest. They are quite an awesome Bemani-centric arcade/bowling alley. I was quite sad when they moved away from my home town of Woonsocket RI. Andy is an awesome guy (the owner) and he loves Bemani and fighters - a whole room centered around fighting games and another just for Bemani, including every major Bemani game (IIDX, Pop'n, DDR, etc). All the fighting games use traditional japanese candy cabs w/stools.

Jesus a fucking dollar for something that isn't some rail shooter / DDR kind of cabinet? But shit, I'd still throw some down just to play it some, too bad arcades in America are pretty much dead ><.

I still hope they add more characters to this game. I enjoyed alot of the characters from Alphs, most of which are absent. I know it is hard to balance when the list gets long, but it is so fun to switch it up between 6 different guys. Hopefully they add some of my old favs, such as Guy or Dan.

Hmm, I actually only not too far from the one in Montgomery, AL, and it only costs 50 cents to play there. Still, I don't think it's worth it just because of gas costs. I can wait for the console version.

I will be heading to Chinatown Fair tomorrow specifically to play SF4. Taking a vacation day from work and everything for it. =P Street Fighter is the game that defines me. I have some serious history wrapped around those games, and can't wait to start that next chapter.
I'm not going to lie, I'll probably think the game is great no matter what.
If any arcade is going to get it in New Jersey, it may be Eight on the Break in Dunellen. I know both parties have been communicating, so hopefully that means I can play without having to leave the state soon.

Sadly, that wasn't a listing of arcades that contain the SF4 cabinet. That was a listing of every remaining arcade in the US.

What people need to realize is that arcades in Japan are generally expensive. And I mean generally in that most games are at least 100 yen (~ 1 US Dollar) unless you find a place that advertises 50/10 yen games, in which you proceed to yell out "Sweet, a fucking cheap arcade!" I don't mind the fact that I payed $1.00 at Chinatown Fair for a game I was paying 100 yen for in it's birthplace. It's a new game and people need to stop complaining.
That said, fun game is fun.

I'm in Philadelphia on the other side of town.
I picked up some friends after work and we spent some time with it.
The set up was a bit odd. Two cabinets with one joystick each are adjacent to each other, and both cabs force you to play four matches on Beginner mode. After the fourth match the other person can buy into your game.
I spent the majority of the time using Rufus, who feels very Karin Kanzuki-esque.
The new tactical guard feels like MoTW's "Just defend" system.
I did fairly well, although most people played it like Super Turbo and didn't take full advantage of the EX abilities.
Lots of Kens.
Lots and lots of Kens, as well as Sagats.

Booooo. I was hoping for one in Chicago even though there isn't a decent arcade in the whole city that I can find. The only one that I know of is Gameworks and that's not even in the city. All they have there, are games that are about ten years old. They have one good fighting game, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.

Played it a good bit at Arcade UFO in Austin over the weekend. OMG, it's fantastic. I reckon we've got the best setup in the nation right now... *four* sitdown cabinets all with 32" HD monitors.

For all you Aussies in Melbourne, its at Crown Casino!!!
Just like the old days, there was a constant big crowd around the machine with people lining up to challange. Very old school...
I got nostalgic playing it. Not sure if I like the feeling when you jump though, something every SF EX about it..but the rest feels like classic street fighter... Nothing better than beating a complete stranger :)

I fucking hate it when people who can't play fighting games try to review them.
All they can talk about is the superficial looks rather than the real meat and bones of game mechanics.
It's the latter that is real judge of quality in games, moreso with fighting games where one move can simply make or break a character.

@devilsnap: Most game reviews are done by people who can't really play them very well. No need to be a total douche about it though. Go to a forum if you want an in-depth description of how it plays, what else did you expect from a general gaming blog?

@zanzibarlegend: Memories is right! That chicken kicked my ass all the time. I never cut school to go there, since I went to school in Queens, but it's was a damn good pastime. I'll be down to kick some ass in the arcades and vice versa.
@jackal888: WHY! PETA! WHY!
Also, didn't Capcom say that they'll be more characters in the console version of the game. It makes sense they do have more time to work on it. Here's hoping for Sakura, Cammy, Karin and Ibuki on the consoles!

@vantesaur:
That's true to a point but we expect game reviewers to at least be familiar with the genre of game that they play.
If a racing game fan was to review a shooting game and all he could say was "It looks cool and the grass is very realistic", then that wouldn't be good enough for anyone.
You'd want the reviewer to mention the types of guns, how they feel, control-scheme/sensitivity/issues, any new concepts for the genre (eg. bullet time), what makes it stand apart etc.
You could go to an in-depth forum for either fighter or shooter, but even review should have more substance than mere glancing remarks.
Having said that tho, Jim wasn't making a full review, and while my previous comment appeared aimed at him, it was more frustration at game reviewers in general, especially after SCIV.

@zanzibarlegend: A dollar is really nothing for a brand new arcade cab. If you were into the Bemani scene back when it was bigger in 2002-2004, you'd be used to $2.00 games that don't last more than 6 minutes (particularly for Bemani games that aren't DDR, although DDR prices could get that high too). I don't particularly think SF4 should always be $1 but I'm not surprised it's starting that way.

@egonpax: Good times man. I was the second to last person up to bat. Lots of Ken action going on, but there was a nice Gief showing as well. Even some Sagat love thrown in the mix. Seemed like all the people that used the new characters got smacked around. Not really sure how to use them yet. Still waiting to see some El Fuerte in action. Anyone that wants to battle at Planet Zero look me up.

It's pretty awesome. Nice to see large crowds at the arcades again. The controls are alright. Joystick feel is off. $1.00 per play is worth it. Honestly...you'll be waiting in line for a while. And it's amazing how everyone is totally chill and just excited to play. Throwing mechanics are uber cheap. You'll have players just walking up to you after you are down and throwing you...cheaper than block throws.

Hit Narrows in Tacoma yesterday and the place was packed. At least 15 people trying to play around 7pm.
I got in a couple rounds, but there were already people who had the Focus system down and it was a little ridiculous.

@ egonpax: 20 credits (or 18 for VIP cards), is pretty much about a dollar a play give or take some pocket change. According to the points system there, 15 credits is equivalent to a dollar.
I was the first person to play SFIV that day, as I was the Asian Ryu player wearing the Uniqlo x MGS4 shirt that pulled off the Ultra combo on the El Fuerte in the second round and caused the massive crowd to go crazy. I should have played again, but the wait was too unbearable.
Too bad I lost the next match against a guy that played with Ken rather well. D:

are you cheapskates making this much of a big deal over ONE DOLLAR?
Welcome to inflation, 10+ years ago games were 50 cents, if you think about that in terms of what else has gone up since then (candy bars, pop (soda), gas, etc.), I'd say it isn't that bad.
Especially if it keeps an arcade in business in this day and age.
That being said, the new SF is awesome. I hated waiting 10 minutes for my turn each time, but it was a lot of fun. The cabs are hilarious, it's two Samsung 32' screens with logitech speakers on the sides.
Really though, I'm guessing most loyal SF fans should be in their adult life making some sort of income, so 1 dollar a play, really isn't that bad, especially for the first big arcade game release in years (SVC was the last "big" release and it blew, SFIV was worth the wait . . . so far)
