Next Far Cry Could Be In Africa (Again)
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on August 27, 2008
Ubisoft's Patrick Redding, Far Cry 2's narrative designer, confirms that the next Far Cry game will take place in Africa — just like Far Cry 2! Keep in mind that the team is still in the "preliminary stages", but does have a "commitment to the African setting". Redding says:
For us Africa still has a huge amount of promise... There are still things we want to do with the African setting, and I think it's safe to say we'll continue to explore it... That said, we might find something new and compelling about the Antarctic setting that wants us to make the next game there, but honestly, we're still at the preliminary stages. If we wanted to make the next game set in the... forest of South America, we could do it.
But I think to save time, for us, one of the reasons we chose to use the African setting is because we felt that in order to retain the Far Cry brand value, of an exotic, dangerous environment, a place that maybe people haven't had a chance to see themselves, or have seen extensively in film, television and other games, we wanted to choose Africa.
Let's face it, jungle islands are probably less exciting as they were four years ago.
But a slowly melting Antarctica? Man, sign me up for that game.

Uhm, they create an engine and assets for Far Cry 2. Of course it much easier to polish and upgrade this to make Far Cry 3 then to begin anew yet again.
Hopefully it won't be as minor as Rainbow Six Vegas 1 - - > 2, which felt like 1.5

So after the Middle East Africa is the new trend? Can we expect that from now on every shooter will play in a war-torn African country?

Africa seems to be the new untapped source now that world war 2 europe has dried up.

Having lived in West Africa for a couple years, I can definitely say that area of the world deserves more attention from gaming. Just driving around town in Conakry, Guinea is a videogame itself.

Sounds pretty cool. They should, however, refrain from the African zombies, African soldiers, African animals, or just African enemies in general. That way the bitching will be at a minimun. :-p

I think Antarctica would be an awesome place to set it, although i'm pretty sure quite a few games have been set there.

I'd criticise this decision, but the truth is that I can't think of that many games that have even taken place in that region of the world. I've been to the Middle East, the US, Eastern Europe and Japan so many times that Walkthroughs for one game practically work 1:1 with the others (Eh Hulk? Spider-man?)
But seriously, Africa is a massive continent, and there's plenty of diversity that would excuse a sequel to be developed there, for if not then where the hell else would the next-one be set? I'd have to be looking at a largely-fictionalised open-world setting to withstand possible onset of boredom.

Really, people? You haven't played the first one, stop bitching that the concept is already played out.

Put it on the streets of Denver, imo.

If they're doing africa again, they should pump up the stereotypes as to offend as many ethnics and fanatics as possible. It's entertainment so stereotypes are allowed (books do it all the time)
I'm pretty excited about Far Cry 2 already, and a setting in antarctica seemed dumb at first, but melting... well, that adds a whole lot of possibilities :D

Translation: Far Cry 3 being set in Africa avoids us having to model the terrain, we can just reuse assets from Far Cry 2 and keep cranking out these games every 6 months!

Fun fact: Antarctica used to be a jungle continent.
I will welcome our jungle Dinosaur overlords return with open arms. So long as the raptors don't eat them.
