The $US 100,000 Madden Bet
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:30 PM on August 27, 2008
Once was a day rappers could settle their fueds with bullets. That or lyrics. But that would be asking a little too much of Bow Wow & The Game, who are instead settling their beef (prompted by The Game's boast he was the world's best Madden player) via a game of...Madden 09. A game of Madden 09 which will be thrown straight up on YouTube, and which will see the loser donate $US 100,000 to the winner's charity of choice. Charity? Good deeds? This rap game's changed, yo.

That's pretty stupid.
Which is nothing to say of "Bow Wow". Can't they simply be known by their names?

The video of Game playing madden on youtube and on konsolekingz is disgusting. He played a guy that sucks, single covered randy moss, didnt know how to pass, and most certainly didn't know hot to defend the pass. You can't argue with his record, if that's his real PSN.

@Tietsu: I'm not going to defend the musical stylings of The Game and Bow Wow, both of whom's music I don't really care for. But there are several good rappers out there, some even great, creating some of the best music of today, regardless of genre. Just because its not something you personally care for doesn't make it bad or substandard.
Also, as much as I'd love to make some crack about the two in the article, they're doing something good for charity, even if it gives them a bit of publicity in the process. So good for them.

@Tietsu: if you're gonna harp on that (intolerance & misogyny) at least put it onto radio/mainstream rap. there's a slew of quality underground, conscious & lesser known shit that sends the exact opposite message - Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common, Tribe, Wu-Tang and so m many other greats.

This seems like a pretty good deal to me. Madden probably doesn't mean a lot to a large part of the Kotaku clientele, but it should be pretty revealing that two fairly big names in rap are making it their weapon of choice in a $100,000 competition. Sure, it might be kind of a publicity stunt, but it takes a pretty bitter cynic to not recognize that so much money to charity is a good thing no matter what way you spin it.

There is nothing wrong with giving to charity and to lose is probably an better "win" then beating someone at a video game. @PsycheE: camp lo? awesome.. unfortunately their last discs were pretty bland, but 1995s Uptown Saturday Night is a seminal piece of hip hops history. For those who dont know, the album is all entirely based on the marriage of 70s blaxploitation and 20s harlem, taken from a dadaist approach. theyre using oddball artistic slang to paint a portrait of a world where the overexaggerated gangsters and pimps of the 1970s films are coexisting in the sophisticated jazzy setting of the 1920s harlem. its pretty neat.
im glad bow wow and game are doing this, i love how people that know nothing about them or their music come in here and talk trash because theyre so closed minded. i hate fall out boy and nickelback, but if the front men from those 2 bands were doing something like this.. i wouldnt be commenting on this post just to hate, its childish. in fact, the game wanted to write a song with other rappers speaking out against the violence of some police that killed a young black man for no reason some years back. he actually was in tears because he was angry that nobody he reached out to was touched enough to want to get on the track with him. oh but all anyone has to say is "yeah pop caps and drive bys" grow up.

man dont get me started, its a common trend for metal and punk band members to have stage names. by the way, hip hop believe it or not is a spoken version of r and b. so its a sub genre, just like punk is of rock. punk and hip hop have so many similarities, that although im not a big fan of punk, i can definitely see where mainstream exposure has really ruined the genre.

@Tietsu:
I see what you mean.
Rap is totally the only genre with artists who promote such things...

@Atheist Jew:
You seem deeply ignorant of how many artists, actors, and writers change their names.

Oh golly, $100,000!? That's like, 5% of the total amount of money they spend on all of their clothes and jewelry.
I know, any money to charity is generous and good, so I'm not saying them giving this money to charity is a bad thing. But really, rappers are some of the most selfish wealthy people around. I'm not saying they shouldn't live in luxury, because if I was insanely rich I'd probably over indulge too, but I wouldn't throw down millions on the most useless shit ever just to flaunt what you have. I'd do the right thing and give it to others who need it.
I'd probably have some nice expensive clothes too, but do you really need 100 pairs of shoes, do you REALLY need 50 different gucci outfits? Do you really think it's necessary to spend over $10,000 on an outfit you'll only wear once? Do you really need your teeth to be worth more money than the average person makes in a year? Come the fuck on...

I listen to all kinds of music, From Beatles to MF DOOM, but hip hop doesn't catch my eye like it used to.

@Mact: It's ignorant to think that people coming up with stupid names like Bow Wow and The Game is ridiculous??
@Mact: Unfortunately I've got a name that's easily memorable and relatives in the movie and television industries...*sigh*

@Thinker302: Of course, SC did introduce me to those two DJ's, I do favor Nujabe. Its a contemporary take on easy listening which I highly recommend.
