Warhammer Online Goes Gold, Gold Seller Gives Out Beta Keys
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:40 AM on August 27, 2008
It's a press release twofer! Mythic Entertainment has announced that Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning has gone gold, with the game shipping to stores in time for servers to go live on September 18th, and the gold farmers are ready for it! "Internet gaming service" SwagVault has announced that they'll be giving away 50 beta keys for the game via randomly selected email entries received between now and September 5th, giving players a chance to experience the game for themselves before deciding to buy. They'll also be giving out beta access to folks whose order numbers contain the number sequence 8907, which coincides with the open beta date of September 7th, 2008.
So how exactly does a gold seller wind up with 50 beta keys for an MMO from Mythic Entertainment, a company that has gone after such enterprises legally in the past and won? I'm going to go ahead an assume they used bots.

@Kral2: I see where you're coming from but there is a rather clear cut line between difference of opinion and interesting discussions on one hand, and extremely lame and ignorant comments on the other. Maybe I'm being selfish but I don't wish for my top gaming bookmark to end up like youtube.

I can see people buying small amounts of gold to get their RvR sets and mount. If there are lazy people, gold will sell.
But still, gold farmers in WAR won't find the same sort of market they've experienced in WoW. There's no crafting of weapons and armor, and some time into RvR + a pittance will get you an awesome leveling set.
Also, it's bloody easy to level and have fun at the same time, since PvPing gives you exp as well. So I don't see people using power leveling services if they even want to play the game in the first place.

@darbonne: The problem with digg-style comment voting (and previously slashdot-style) is you get massive same-mindedness. The community turns into a boring mush as opposing opinions get voted away. I'd rather have conflict, but without stupidity. :) Manual moderation should take care of that.

I wish Kotaku would enforce a "minus" tab. So that people who come to post the recent "I don't care" and "Sigh" posts would be given bad rep and eventually (and hopefully) would come to the conclusion that they are neither interesting nor funny and just takes up space on an otherwise great blog/site.
On topic: "I'm going to go ahead an assume they used bots." They're probably getting desperate for good PR at this time ^^

Dont get me started on Swag Vault. I quit playing Wow a while back then decided to come back a year later. I had them power level a toon for me, but the bastards used bots and got me suspended. It was my fault really. Then I was stupid enough to buy gold from them once and again I got supspended. They still call me almost a year later about once a week to tell me my gold is ready for deriVery!
Currently I'm playing WoW Lich King Beta and I also got invited to the preview weekend of Warhammer this passed weekend and although Warhammer is much better than the original WoW was at launch, it doesn't hold a candle to Lich King. Lich King = pure awesomeness!

WAR's economy doesn't seem to be too huge a part in the game the way it is in other MMO's. At least from what I've seen during beta gaming.

They might have used bots...or they might have just pre-ordered 50 copies of the game so they can start farming from the word go. They have no use for the beta keys as the stuff you get in beta doesn't carry over.

@Ephemera: Don't worry, they'll find that there isn't much of one. There really isn't a need for gold in this game, most gear/skills are relatively cheap. They'll actually lose money trying to gold farm in this game.

The about WAR is: it's actually fun to progress through the game and 'play' it.
WoW bored me to tears as I had to grind boring quests and kill countless MOBs just to buy anything because the cat-assers and Asian gold-farmers obliterated the economy since day one.
When a game's fun to play, I fail to see the point of paying someone else to play it for me (how many people paid someone to win Super Mario Bros. for them?).

I know I will buy the game, if just out of peer pressure as my hometown friends who are mmo players are going to buy it, but not sure how long I'll play it. Unless there is just a huge influx of players and RvR becomes a ridiculous spectacle of awesome the game doesn't seem that great. I like the art style and the RvR system, but the control responsiveness, both the reaction time of the game engine, and the response you get from your abilities (sound, graphics, damage) leaves something to be desired.

Why does Swagvault's logo remind me so much of Steam?... They're too similar in concept and could be somewhat confusing despite the different color schemes and orientation...
Looking at the image above, I thought Swagvault was an off-shoot of Steam. It doesn't help that they both offer the same kind of services...

Mythic just edit adds money and items to swag vault accounts. Swagvault then cuts in Mythic for 60% of the profits.

Ive played the game for a couple weeks, ive gotten each class to lvl 5 or more. So far i think they have a hit on their hands, it wont take me from wow but its refreshing to see SOMETHING besides wow out there thats half decent.
Public quests are fun and rvr seems ok, they have some good ideas and the game seems stable for beta. the animations and sound effects need work, its cartoony and pretty enough to lure some of our female gamers, im a sucker for good warhammer fun so heres to their success.

Bigger Pro-tip: If you order from Target, understand that there was a printing error and all betas that contain what appears to be a O or 0 are actually supposed to be a Q. This cost me about 30 minutes of harming my keyboard until I found this news on the main site.

what I understand from all the reviews that have appeared on Warhammer Alliance since the NDA was lifted is that tradeskills are very limited and there is no economy system like in other MMORPG's, so I'm not sure WTF this is about...

@NYKnicker: no MMO will ever have the numbers that WoW had but a mmo doesn't need that kind of numbers to be a hit. A MMO only needs about 100,000 subscribers to be a hit. I would say WAR will probably have about 500,000 at least if not more. The game is far more polished then WoW was months after release and it has more content that WoW had a year after release.

Open beta codes are sold at Target for $0.99 a piece.. (coming with a $5 off coupon, live game headstart, portable camp in-game item, and a ring that gives you fire damage) That's another option as to where they could've gotten it.

@taftsearlobe33: 100,000 to be a hit? That's pre-WoW thinking there buddy.
I wouldn't say that having only 100,000 is bad - its just that these days, if your game doesn't completely suck, it should deserve a lot more subscribers now that the gamers of the world are more open to the idea of monthly subscriptions for a MMORPG.
Anyway, if the closed beta applicant numbers are to be believed, there are over 850,000 people who are interested in trying out this game. Conclude what you will from that number..

Interested in trying out, doesn't mean interested in making a commitment to keep playing. I admit I'm one of the 850,000 who is "interested" in trying Warhammer. Just like I was one of the people "interested" in trying AoC...just like I was one of the people "interested" in trying just about any notable game to come out in the past few years.
There is almost always more people interested in a game before it comes out then there are playing it afterwards. Such is the drive of simply curiosity... oh...and free stuff. I'll try any game if I can try it for free.

*This might get posted more than once... the submit button is acting up :(
I played WoW up until recently... my old guild (or at least our more skilled player) are making the switch to Warhammer. WoW was fund at first, but with the increase in jackassery, constant grinding, the arenas that made raiding obsolete (why raid when you can do that all day?)... killed it for me.
I had the chance to play during Warhammer's closed beta. The game has a lot of potential. I love the dark, Lovecraftian feeling of the game. It still needs a few more tweaks, but it's looking good so far (...vendors who don't sell a thing, but will gladly take something off of your hands, etc.).
My personal favorites: The Disciple of Khaine and Shaman

@cythas: nothing has changed 100,000 is still a hit and they will still make a ton of money. WoW is a anomoly and it will not be repeated. A mmo still only needs 100k to be a hit.
