New Skate It Video Shows Wii Balance Board Controls
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 7:40 AM on August 28, 2008
Even though 64% of those who bought Wii Fit have it collecting dust in their closet, the new controls of Skate It using the Wii balance board look, well, promising. In the latest trailer we get another quick look at the Wii version of the game. I'm personally going to take my balance board in my yard and start practicing for this. The neighbours will love it. The game will be hitting the Wii and Nintendo DS this upcoming holiday season.

Finally some insight into the balance board controls. Looks hella fun.
One question:
Is Skate It a wii version of the first skate game or the upcoming sequel? Seems like a waste to port the first game when the second one is one the way but I wasn't sure.

Couldn't they afford people without bandages on their feet? Or is that supposed to sell the appearance of hardcore skater injuries to this game?

Hopefully the whole "use the wii-mote to jump in one shot and use the board to do the same" means different control schemes for people who don't have the extra money for an exercise accessory. Do they even sell the Balance Boards separate from Wii Fit?

is there going to be the interruption of 'do not jump on the wii board'?
I see a lot of broken scales

64% of owners in Japan, for a tech magazine.
On topic, this might make better use of the balnace board than Wii Fit.

wow, It actually looks good and runs at a smooth clip. I'm impressed. I recently re-discovered the Wii love again after a friend of mine grabbed me a copy of Zack and Wiki. I started playing Mario Kart again and a bit of SSBB and Metroid. I may very well pick up skate it. Does it have online support?

seems complicated. I saw the person use the wii-mote to jump in one shot and use the board to do the same. Maybe I'm seeing things.

looks interesting
I'd like to see how they do a surfing game. I don't think I've ever heard of one.

I'm glad the Balance Board is shown only like one every six examples. Definitely made for the Balance Board.

Sweet, looks like one of those cheesy arcade games.

Also, since it is 1) a Wii game, and 2) NOT first-party... yeah, it's pretty much got zero chance of having online. It would be nice if one could at least share saved replays, via WiiConnect...

It seems like skating games would be superlame, using a traditional controller/wiimote-and-nunchuck... The balance board, if implemented properly, should be a great way to play this game! Key words: 'if implemented properly'.
@lancaster1: You mean *other than* T&C Surf Designs, right? :-o The penultimate surf game! (I still can't get over how much the surfing parts sucked, in that game...wow...)
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: I am guessing Skate It Wii will not have online, although the below is by no means conclusive: IGN: Will there be any multiplayer or online components of either version of Skate It?
Scott Blackwood: We realize that skating is something that's not only fun on your own but with others as well. Skate It - Wii will offer a a deep and unique career progression that allows you to earn sponsors, unlock gear, and for the first time travel the world. In addition Skate It - Wii will also offer a wide variety of multiplayer modes so that you can skate on your own or locally with your friends .
Skate It - NDS will also offer a unique and deep career progression, in addition to Single Cart, Multi Cart and WiFi multiplayer modes which were created uniquely for that platform. Skate It NDS will also have a few new unique online sharing components which we'll be speaking about at a later date.

@Stuffed: You don't need the balance board, but that's not going to stop me from slapping some grip tape on mine :)

Hmm looks interesting. Last skate game I played was THPS2 on the PC, I was looking at the options for wii and it has a poor Tony Hawk's game, and a mediocre Tony Hawk's spinoff.

I thought the balance board was just going to be used for steering, but I guess you can do all the tricks with it. I don't get it, how are you gonna do 360 flips on that thing?

I can see many people breaking there balance boards with this game. People are gonna freak out and jump CRACK!

@CousinWalter:
"how are you gonna do 360 flips on that thing?"
Maybe with a real skatboard duct taped to the balance board, but that would contradict the whole idea behind a skateboard game, i guess...

@dae_giovanni: I don't think penultimate means what you think it means. Penultimate means next-to-last in a series.
This game looks like it's got potential, although I'm afraid people might just be too inclined to jump on the board. Now if only I could find a copy of Wii Fit and a balance board in Brooklyn. I've had the worst luck!

In my humble opinion, when it gets to the point where you have to stand up on a balance board to play a skateboarding game, you should just try real skateboarding. See, you can actually feel the board flip below your feet. You can ACTUALLY PUSH. There is no need for a video game that tries so hard to simulate real skateboarding when you can just do it yourself and have a much better time, not to mention get REAL exercise.

@CousinWalter: "how are you gonna do 360 flips on that thing?"
Well, how did you do 360 flips in games before this one? Throw the controller in the air?

I've come to the conclusion that I really don't want to pretend I'm physically doing whatever action is in the game when I play games. It all sounded really really cool when the Wii was first announced but after owning it since launch I'm just sick of pretending to do things with the wiimote and/or whatever other stupid peripheral is laying around. I just prefer to push buttons to make things happen. I think all the best Wii games this generation will be the ones that aren't all innovative with the remote. Honestly, they'll probably just be good games despite the waggle.

@goonface: Why are these arguments against realism never applied to graphics?
"In my humble opinion, once graphics become realistic enough to show a scrape on your character's knee, you should probably just try real skateboarding."
Those types of arguments remind me of my grandpa watching me play Tecmo Bowl, "why don't you just go outside!!! damn kids these days"

It's an interesting idea, but how well it'll actually work with just weight changes is anyone's guess. Will it update quick enough to set up decent lines? Time will tell.
However, that tag line is dumb.
Skate it - fine with that, despite repeating the game name.
Own it - also okay, nods to the events in the game.
Make it yours - wait, isn't that what owning something is?

This is going to lead to some ridiculous youtube videos of horrible injuries sustained while jumping around on the balance board. I approve.

@dowingba: Pressing a button or moving the analog stick is simple enough. Using your feet to control the game is pretty different! I don't see how they'll be able to mimic that real-life scooping and flicking motion. Maybe you'll actually 360 flip your balance board - basically throw it into the air.
