The Art of Star Wars The Force Unleashed
Posted by Brian Crecente at 7:00 AM on August 28, 2008
With the Star Wars The Force Unleashed approaching, Lucas Arts sent along a copy of their new book about the game.
The Art and Making of Star Wars The Force Unleashed is a chunky, 168 page book filled with more than 300 pieces of concept art, two packs of character cards and plenty of behind the scenes details of how the title went from concept to game.
I've only had a chance to flip through the book so far, but what I've seen impresses. The book is divided up into six chapters that tackle the concept behind the game and early pitches, the story approval process, the characters in the game, the environments, the technology and a run through of all of the game's milestones and how it progressed from greenlight, to alpha to launch.
I'm not typically a big fan of these over-sized art books but there seems to be enough meat to the book to make it worth picking up. I still might have a problem dropping $US 30 for it, but I'm sure bigger fans of the franchise won't.

The concept art for the Apprentice is probably a stick figure on a napkin, given how absolutely awful he looks in game... I'll just close my eyes and picture the Soul Calibur 4 version...

@3inst3in: Agreed, that and the camera is a major annoyance, while it's mandatory to be good in a combat-heavy game like that. It just feels stuck together with glue, the whole game.

I would say this game is gonna be badass, but I think "badass" is a total understatement for how cool this game is gonna be.

@Candlejack: i kind of agree. im a bit on the fence on this one. probably won't buy it on day one. not really a must have for me. i guess I was expecting more? and the controls didn't really seem all that intuitive.

Cannot wait for this game. I wasn't too sure about it but the demo completely sold me. Throwing a Stormtrooper into a TIE Fighter so hard it explodes is quite possibly the best thing ever.

The way the apprentice holds the lightsaber is fucking class in the concept art (and of course in game)

Demo let me down. Had too high expectations. Maybe it was the level that was really bland and linear...but I won't pay full price for this game.

The book is OK... but sadly paperback. I've seen it at work and... meh, I'm not big into art books, especially from vidja games.
Still, the game itself looks awesome. Throwing a stormtrooper into a TIE fighter is crazy excellent fun.

@3inst3in: The Force is weak in you.
But yeah, I agree the controls needed some getting used to. I played it once and then left disappointed. Since then I've played it probably 10 times and once you get comfortable with it, it's pure pussy.
Can I say that?

I wonder if they'll find some way to integrate the Apprentice into the Star Wars cannon without it looking like it was tacked on. Hey who know? If this game sells enough maybe ol' George will make a new movie with him in mind...

@peAr nectAr: Yeah the newer trilogy wasn't really that good. Maybe he can redeem himself with another one?
Kinda like the Matrix trilogy. You want to see if they can do better but on the other hand you're going to keep thinking that it'll suck more...
I dunno, it seems hard to believe that the Emperor wouldn't know about the Apprentice. Seeing as he seems to be super powerful with the Force. Unless he gets killed at the end of the game. Which I doubt since that would be predictable and LucasArts would need him for a sequel if this sells well.

WARNING: This post is a tragic tale of woe and is may not suitable for children.
My PC is crying. It was invested with such love not so long ago with Half Life 2, Call of Duty, Bioshock, and many others running smoothly and happily.
When it saw the graphics of The Force Unleashed it happily spun up its graphics card in anticipation. Only to find out that it was a PS3/X360 exclusive. PC was sad, but then thought of KOTOR and was not completely downhearted. PC only had to wait a little while longer and surely there would be an announcement.
So wait PC did. Carefully paying attention to the headlines. Watching for any mention of the fabled game. Then one day PC stumbled across a great announcement, it was about the game! PC quickly opened it up and was overjoyed. The Force Unleashed would be coming to other platforms too. This meant that PC surely wouldn't be left out with his brand new quad core processor and two gigs of RAM. Overheating with anticipation PC read through the list of platforms to make the cut.
The Wii, that was to be expected. How could they not tap into that gold mine. But the Wii, it knew, had only a small fraction of the interactivity that PC had in his gyro mouse and its graphics could not even measure up to the old GPU that PC had replaced a year ago let alone his new one.
The PS2, yes that made sense too. They would want plenty of people to play and so many had bought that paperweight over the years.
Well PC was definitely in awe of the versitility of the design teams. They could pull together a great game on all of these inferior systems and get people to even buy multiple copies of the same game for different systems. PC was overjoyed at all of this system love from just one game. After this happy thought PC continued processing the article.
The PSP, well it is a handheld and people want to take it on the go, but what about cousin Lappy? He's mobile too and he's got that sweet new flash memory harddrive. Oh well, you can't expect children to all have laptops.
The DS, okay that's a little odd. Putting a game that instills awe and majesty of eye popping moves onto a grainy and pixelated handheld just feels very DOS to PC.
Such a great game to handheld systems was a wonder to PC. Why PC even felt a sense of happiness that these simple machines would get to experience the joy of such a great game.
PC was elated to see all of the systems set out, it seemed that The Force Unleashed would truely be one of the most multi-platform games that had been released in a long time. PC was ready for the game that would put Crysis to shame.
Yet when PC finished the article he found no mention of its version there. Surely they wouldn't have left its name off the list. Surely PC must have made the cut. Even most of the B-team members were on the list. They couldn't have missed the $4000 stud sitting on the desk...could they?
They had. PC's hopes and dreams were crushed. PC's hard drive could take this second hand machine abuse no longer and PC's hard drive spun out of control. Overclocking its processor and graphics card the PC left this world with a puff of smoke.
PC was a star no more.

The demo is impressive. Taking down the tie fighters with the force is fun but controlling it is difficult. I'll rent as the preview that shows when selected from the ps3 xmb looks awesome vs. the demo's stale hanger.

oh god holding a light saber backwards is completely original. But yeah, the demo was a little too bland for me. The force powers were really cool, but what character progression will there be from what you got in the demo? You swing a light saber but it still takes 3 wacks to get through a guard in cloth? Come on, where is the dismemberment that should be there? Just about every time a light saber was swing and hit a person in the movies there was a limb flying off at least.

The book will be good, these star wars tie in books always are. Gotta say the game was a must buy until I played the demo. Wasn't that wowed with it. I didn't like the controls. Thought they felt too... arcadey. I don't think they worked as well as the controls for jedi outcast & jedi academy. Still, time will tell, it always does :)

I'm really not looking forward to this game anymore. The demo was awful in my opinion. The pacing was mediocre, the saber fighting was extremely bland, and the targeting system was impossible. couple all this with a crummy camera and hyper active character movement, and you have a barely decent game.
If you want a game in which to use cool force powers, pull out the old dusty Xbox and pop in psy-ops. i promise, there aren't any shitty button mashing Quick time events in that game.

@ReconToaster: are you kidding me? the targeting system works fine.
i can hit practically anything with anything with barely having to look at i.
and here's something interesting about the lightsaber controls:
if you hit the attack button really fast, you'll do some really fast, less affect moves, but if you tap the attack button slightly slower, your attack is actually different and does more damage.
that, and the lightsaber force combos are great.

@3inst3in: i've played the demo a good 8 times (my friend about the same) and by now we can just enter a room and clear it with a few swift moves in a good amount of time, depending on the enemies.
but the first time i played it i was kinda confused, but now i just walk into the first room of 20 guys or so on hard mode and just FSUP without losing a lot of health.

@Candlejack:
I know what you mean. I didn't find the camera to be that much of an issue, though. It was occasionally hard to use during tight battles, but most of the time it seemed adequate. What I was more concerned about was the targeting system that likes to lock on to barrels and poles rather than the people shooting you. It gets even worse once you've cleared the room of anyone since you can't switch between two inanimate targets on the fly; highlight the wrong object and you'll have to keep moving and rearranging the camera before it locks to what you want (like that gate where you have to move the locks with the force).
There's also little, insignificant things that irk me like the fact that the block, despite using the lightsaber and burning the surrounding walls if you touch them, can't harm soldiers even if you "smack them in the face" with the blocking motion. A few of the halls have random, pre-scripted explosions as soon as you use a force push. Oh, and you can't slingshot yourself by force-bending the metal doors all the way around to one side so much that they spring back at you... :-P

I played the demo of it and the whole game reminded me of a game called PSI OPS, especially the 'force grab' which is exactly like the 'telekinetic power'.
