THQ Australia Working On 'Brutal' Warhammer 40K Brawler
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:30 PM on August 28, 2008
Looks like THQ have plans to wage an endless war on humanity's wallets. Not only are they (well, they and Relic) serving up Dawn of War II and a "ready when it's done" 40K MMO, but job listings appearing on THQ Australia's website reveal the company also have plans for a 40K "action game" for the 360 and PS3. The company site doesn't out-and-out name the project, saying "We are currently looking for people to work on a next-gen brutal, intimate melee combat game using a world-class brand", but a listing on a local recruitment page gives the game away, using 40K as its main selling-point. Games based on 40K that aren't Space Hulk or Dawn of War have generally sucked, but who knows, a "brutal, intimate" combat game on a PS3/360 might yet be able to take the Dawn of War intro and make a game out of it.

A Space Hulk FPS or TPS would rock my world. Imagine, gameplay along the lines of Gears of War, but W40K... Oooooh yeah, I want it already.

What's more brutal and intimate than clearing out a space hulk? Here's hoping.
Love me the Imperial Guard, though.

I want a 40K FPS that doesn't suck.
Fire Warrior was like a little advertising campaign for the then-new Tau. Hell, enemies couldn't even go up stairs. You could spend the entire game shooting from stairs and the enemies would do nothing.

Just like an video game adaptation with 40k, there's a lot of potential and a lot of possible things to fuck up horrendously. I think there's a lot more room to stick to cannon for a fighter rather than a strategy game (I mean, there aren't really any HQ units in 40k that couldn't go one on one with any other leader. Unless you're Guard. Even then...), but it's fully possible for the team to take "creative liberties" or just accidentally screw something up.
But god damn. A fighter? Dude, I'm callin it right now, Kharn the Betrayer is the final boss. Come on, this is Khornes bread and butter!
Anyway, as always, here's hoping.

Jumping in the fray as an Ork Boy, swining my Choppa in the face of a chaos marine right before he cuts off an arm with his chainsword?
Sounds good to me.

Cool! As a lover of brawlers, I'm not seeing enough of a revival in the genre. I'll be watching news on this closely :)

I'm actually Australian, so forget about interpeting the following as some form of nation bashing:
How significant can this title possibly be if THQ has palmed it off to their Australian studio? I mean, come one... us Aussies aren't renowned for being movers and shakers in the video game industry, so can we safely presume that this is simply going to be a brand toting potboiler?

What they really need to do is make a WH40K battlefield style of game along with destructable enviros like BFBC.
Now that would be something to behold.

Brawler =/= fighting game. I'm assuming a hack and slash ala DMC/NG/etc. But actually requiring skill I would hope.

God, I hope this is good. I've been anxiously awaiting a good Warhammer fantasy/Warhammer 40K game since I first played Dawn of War.
Actually, forget this game. If they ported Warhammer Online to the 360, I would be MUCH happier. They should do that. They won't, but they should.

Hrm. A Devil May Cry-esque type of game (sans the overblown, overrated flamboyancy of Dante and his ilk) with say; an Inquisitor and a whole lot of cultists/demons/orks could be rather entertaining.
IF they don't fuck it up.

I must confess to not knowing what a brawler really is. Simialr to Condemned, or Devil May Cry? Eldar Gaiden, maybe?

Fire Warrior wasn't bad either. It was nothing special, but there are far worse shooters out there for you to spend your time one. Some of the older RTS games were good too, like Final Liberation.

Can't they just copy Gears of War instead?
I mean, it already feels like 40k, just needs some Space Marines hunkering for cover instead.
If they try and do a cheesy beat 'em up or, God forbid, an overblown Devil May Cry style game, it'll look and feel ridiculous.

@Garro: "I mean, there aren't really any HQ units in 40k that couldn't go one on one with any other leader. Unless you're Guard."
Two words, one name: Commissar Yarrick.
In any case, I can see this going two ways, both of which would be awesome (and neither of which will probably happen, just because):
A) 2.5D fighting game, featuring the greatest leaders of each faction as the characters. Tau are screwed.
B) Side brawler (TMNT, Aliens, AvP, etc). You would, of course, end up playing as Space Marines through various levels against whatever they decide to throw at you ('Stealers in hulks, chaos cultists in hive cities, purging an Ork village, etc).
I think I prefer (B). Get on it!

Just make me a game that plays sort of like a 'God of War' set in the 40k universe--starring Kharn the Betrayer. KILL MAIM BURN

@Jackablade: That would rock, especially if they had different story lines for each of the houses.
@Aseran: Kill counter: 1000, 1001, 1002, 1003...
If it was a fighter, they could model each of the characters after pre-existing special characters. Then, it would at least seem a bit more fair.
For example, Colonel "Iron Hand" Straken, Prince Yriel, Drazhar, Kharn, Marneus Calgar, Old One Eye, Nightbringer, Commander Farsight, That SoB special character... you get the point.
As a brawler, they're better off following Necromunda over 40k. The brawler structure fits that game better.
/Though I'd be very ok with a Necromunda turn-based RPG a la Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics.

A Warhammer 40K brawler? Then I suggest for level bosses the following.
Lucius the Eternal
Typhus: Herald of Nurgle
Ahriman
Kharn the Betrayer
Abbadon the Despoiler

@Tull:
Lucius, though cool, is completely pointless to put in a game as someone you can kill because you'll just end up becoming him. As is Abaddon as he can kill you just by touching you with his sword... that and you're not gonna kill Abaddon lol.
