Runes Of Magic's Palatial Housing In Action
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on August 29, 2008
Here's a video and some screens that highlight the player housing system in the upcoming MMORPG Runes of Magic. I talked at length about the housing features in my impressions of the title from the Games Convention last week, but I forgot to touch on several key points, such as everyone getting their own French maid who facilitates entering and leaving their home, or the fact that you can invite friends into your home, which certainly explains the very comfy bed seen in the clip. No more cybering in the subway tunnel between Ironforge and Stormwind for

This looks like a promising MMO, I just hope that the payers don't get huge advantages over the non-payers.

@robstandard: Keep in mind that video clips from PC games, unless they are chock full of big-company monies, always look like ass.

This looks horrible in every way, EXCEPT for the housing. Animations, music, etc.

@Mike Fahey: It certainly looks more polished than most F2P MMOs, but "something is more than the sum of its parts": taking the good bits from everything and putting it into one game doesn't always produce something good.
Of course, while I'm typing this, I just signed up to the EU site / Closed Beta and checking my inbox...
Damn you, Fahey!

@Mike Fahey: I talked too quickly. While I can download the client, they seems to be sending invitation by waves.
"As a reminder: everyone who registered has the right to participate in the Closed Beta, it simply happens wave by wave.
Should you not be in this first wave, do not give up: we will grant access to Taborea step by step!"

I'm at work, can't download the Beta Client yet. Looking forward to play lvl 1-20 then get bored with it, just like all F2P mmorpg.

Wow, maid service in an mmo, it's becoming more like the anti reality hotel.

The most appealing thing about that video was it's music. If thats any indication of what the ingame music is gonna sound like. I'm sold.

..but...but..cybering in the subway under Ironforge was so romantic. The low lighting and rats added to the ambience.

Looks terrible.
Say what you will about it being different, but all F2P MMOs suck... even Guild Wars.
Anyone that plays this over WoW or WAR is terrible... and don't talk to me about costs, because if you don't make 15 dollars a month, you're not old enough to be playing MMOs anyways.

You have angered the Fahey. Prepare for termination.
@Mike Fahey:
I signed up a little after Kotaku (was it you too?) posted the first notice about Runes of Magic. No invitation yet, I'm guessing it's first come first serve =/
They're prolly stress-testing the servers, letting in players in increments of 200-500 at a time? Hence the staggered the invitations.
Plus well, having a sudden rush of lvl 1s just isn't going to cut it. They have to see the all-important gank factor between the first/alpha invitees and the noobies from later waves =p
Still, it'll be a match b/t this and Perfect World for my F2P (Asian-like) MMO fix. I'm still loving PW's sheer unparalleled customization options, even if the pop music is driving me insane. (But I'm waiting for the 'true' English translated version, since the Malaysian Engrish is impossible)
@kitsuneconundrum:
Same flag =D

@Strychnine:
So having an extra 15 dollars a month for an MMO is the sign of adulthood? Damn, and here I thought having a new baby and spending my extra money on her made me a responsible adult.
I'm glad to be set straight that playing WoW is the best method of determining your status as a grown up.
