Snowblind Makes Death Tank Official
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:30 PM on August 29, 2008
We may have gotten wind of it a bit early, but it's always nice to back things up with an official announcement. Snowblind Studios, Inc. and Flat Games LLC have proudly announced Death Tank for Xbox Live Arcade, a classic game of tanks and trajectories redone with that special XBLA flair. People like to compare it to Worms, but I like to go back a bit further and compare it to an old addiction of mine, Scorched Earth, only with powerups, particle effects, and 8-player multiplayer via Xbox Live (4-players locally). We've got screens, a debut video after the jump, but no word on when it's coming out. Can't possibly be soon enough in my book. This is gaming right here.

It's definately Scorched Earth. Ahhh the memories of wasted hours playing that game with friends

I hope the weapons are just as ridiculous and over the top as SE..
BTW did you know Scorched Earth 3D was released some time ago as a free remake? Really cool stuff

Scorched Earth was great. I had thought for a while that it wasn't that well known. I always disliked Worms because it was an obvious ripoff.

Better link. Apparently, they're remaking the game or something.

Snowblind: here's a mistake you made when copying Pixeljunk.
When you release the game as a Live or PSN game, you're supposed to update it and give it your own flair and twist, not just port the same stupid flash game we can get for free.
That's what separates Pixeljunk from garbage. And you don't seem to have gotten that memo.

Also, if you guys want a really, really good version of it, try an old PC game called "Warheads."
[pc.gamezone.com]
The game is basically Worms with spaceships in a 2D space. Planets all have a different gravity, there are about a million weapons, and you can even design your own. Don't even know where to go buy it anymore though..

My god, I am old as shit if some think this game looks similar to Gunbound/Fortress.
Scorched Earth was two thumbs up. Does anybody remember the old shareware game where you can buy various weapons for your spaceship and bounce around planets?, it was top-down.
Shareware...heh.

Scorched earth indeed. I saw rollers, baby nukes, and even something that looked like a mag deflector... Sadly, it looks like a Death's Head would be too much to ask.

As a kid, playing this game over and over again was a passion for me. On my old Tandy 2000, it was called "Sharpshooter." On my 386, it was called "Scorched Earth." Then later still on my Pentium 1, it was called "Worms." And every time, it got more and more fun.
And you know what? I'll buy this too. Even on my X-Box, even though there are a million flash versions, even though there are emulators of the old ones I can download... I'll still buy this.

good old scorched earth. i liked how you could turn on an option so that when the computer tanks died, they said something like "do you smell that?" or "i see a bright light". it made me chuckle.

@goodknight:
I don't think you can really say that Worms is a "ripoff" of Scorched Earth. They are both just entries in a long line of similar games.
The first graphical version was probably "Artillery" for the Apple II, but there were plenty of text-based versions as well. I remember typing out a text based C64 version from a magazine in the early 80s.
And then there was, of course, GORILLAS.BAS, which every QBASIC user will remember.
Scorched Earth refined the formula that was created by the early artillery games, and Worms altered it to be quite different again. But the genre really goes back much further than either game.
I'm glad to see the genre make a comeback thanks to XBLA.

I LOVE SCORCHED EARTH!
DUDE I used to get the deflector shield (cheaper than the shield or the mega shield) and the WHOLE match I was pretty much immune from shots. Only the Funky Bomb, Super Funky Bomb, Napalm or a extremely well made direct shot made it past my deflector shield. Even the Digger couldn't get me.
I miss that game SO much.

Seriously? Scorched Earth may be old, but if you're going to remake this kind of play, you better top what's already been done. Where's the tunneling? Where's the dirt bombs? Perhaps a money system? Wind? Rubber walls? Lasers?
Let's face it. This game will probably be skin and bones.

Wait. I also remember Scorched Earth from back in the day. Played way too much of it sitting in our apartment, refusing to learn the language, in eastern Europe (anybody else never get the economy to work right?). But all you piners have me confused. Scorched Earth is still around, and updated, and 3d, death's head and all: [www.scorched3d.co.uk] And with the wind turned off and the ability to autoaim your x axis, has a really similar feel to the original, just all fancified.

I loved Scorched Earth, but I just can't get into Worms. Scorched Earth got me stuck for 2 days in DOS mode on my Windows 95 computer, since I had only had an Amiga before that. It ended up teaching me a lot of lessons about Windows in those couple of days.
I also had a game for my Osborne that was similar, but only had you shooting at a target; pretty sure it was Artillery.

God I loved this game back in the days of MS-DOS and Windows 3.1.
We just called it "Tank Wars" back then. It had everything, a plethora of projectiles, cycling backgrounds, wind physics, and destructible terrain. Those were the days, Captain Keen...
Also, Worms is an entirely different game... Plays quite the same though.
