Ghostbusters Pulled From Gamestop
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 8:30 AM on August 30, 2008
We are getting reports that Gamestop have pulled Ghostbusters from pre-order. The tips centre on an internal email at Gamestop, informing staff that pre-order customers will be entitled to a full refund.
Sure enough, where a search for 'Ghostbusters' on Gamestop once returned this impressive array[via Google cache] of results, currently the only Ghostbuster-related item to be found on the site is this rather forlorn copy of the original movie on UMD.
Hard to say exactly what this means - both Terminal Reality and Vivendi have been adamant that the game will be published. The main confusion seems to be who by?

I didn't get any email. My friend did tho.
Maybe it's location based refunds?

Still making headlines all across the country, the Ghostbusters are at it again. This time, at the fashionable dance club, "The Rose." The boys in gray slugged it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist, then stayed on to dance the night away with some of the lovely ladies who witnessed the disturbance. This is Casey Kasem. Now, on with the countdown.

Oh man, this is horrible news. I thought that a new Ghostbusters game was finally a sure thing.

@PapaBear434: Papabear is right, listen to papa.
I think that the only reason that Activision-Blizzard isn't publishing the game is because of these licensing rights. They might be an arm battle for the money pot here and the point of ActiBliz is that it cost money to publish.
You can't do money with a developped game poorly or not published but you can do some fast bucks with a good publishing engine and a poorly developped game... :(

Most people don't seek refunds on games they don't pick up. GameStop is hedging it's bets, cancelling the pre-orders, and hoping to hold onto the money for nothing. Then, if the game gets a publisher, they will re-open pre-orders.

@riffleraffle:
Something like this, it very well could be a dispute over licensing rights and fee's. The original movie company may be looking for a larger, or way to large, of a cut and the game company is either unwilling or unable to pay.
There is no reason a guaranteed moneymaker like this would be canceled other than people arguing over how said money would be divided up.

@arepeegee: You won't be the only one. :(
I wanted to see how the gameplay and story of ghostbusters come together because it makes me think of the other movie franchises (or movie ideas) that might come out better as fleshed out games.

There isn't a publisher yet, if its close to being done it will find one and I am sure the pre-orders will start again once they know the details of when it will get released and/or which platforms it will be on.
I thought I remember something about Sony trying to pick up the rights...maybe it was my imagination.

They shouldnt of hyped it sooo much if they didnt have a publisher behind them at all. It'll be a shame if it gets cancelled, alot of customers were looking foward to it at my store

the main confusion is more..not whom but why?...this game pretty much had success all over it,and thats just by the buzz of the internet before most people had seen it in action(properly)
it still got to me when Activision pulled away from it..they being there for the very first game back in 1984-1985

Why is it hard to say what this means? A game shouldn't really be a a pre-order if there's not even a publisher. And there is no guarantee that it will get a publisher any time soon. So yeah, if I was gamestop I'd remove it from my site too.

Fuck you, Activision. Fuck you in the mouth with a rusty cock. My preorder money from this and GH:WT are now upgrading my Rock Band 2 to the bundle. Thanks for not hurting my pride and credibility!
While we're all wearing tinfoil hats, I'm willing to bet that its because of a lack of future franchise potential. Unless it sells a gabjillion copies, no way in hell you're gonna get this crew together again.
Oh, and for you real conspiracy nuts- Brutal Legend is still pre-orderable, and has a Q2 (2/09) release date in Gamestop's system.

@urutapu: That's correct. All GameStop stores keep a detailed record of all reservations made at that store - date, time, amount deposited, and method of payment. If you never return to pick up your copy of the game, your money will remain in our system indefinitely. My store has over 70 unclaimed Halo 3 reserves. All of them are for five dollars or more, some are even for the full price of 64.94. That money has to be there whenever you show up, whether it's when the game comes out or a year later.
Often, I have customers come in to reserve other games, I bring up their information, and I tell them about the reservations they've made that they've forgotten. Then I give them their money back.

If they're really having this much trouble with publishing the game, something tells me there must be something really wrong with it. It's a pretty huge license, it has the original cast involved ... there's no reason the game shouldn't sell like crazy ... unless it sucks balls.

Every preview of this has been good, its Activision that's being idiotic about it.

I'm telling you, it's because they can't franchise the shit out of it. That's the only possible reason. They won't be able to crank one out every year, which equals profitability to them, so they want nothing to do with it.

@ZTF: Gamestop doesn't touch that money once it's in the system. It rots in the computer for years. If I had preordered Madden '07, never picked it up, suddenly remembered and wanted my money back now, I could get it.
@AssassinTRIP: No it is not location based. I already went to my Gamestop tonight and pulled the money from the game and put it on my Fable preorder. They might just have your email wrong, or it could have gone to your junk bin for some reason.
Also, yes Activision pulled Ghostbusters. I got the ARN call from Gamestop tonight and almost threw my phone across the room I was so upset. I have had this game preordered since October of LAST year. :(
Hopefully someone will pick it up again so I can get it. Maybe October next year? lol
