Fable 2 Hours From Gold, Molyneux Awaits Gamer Reactions
Posted by Brian Crecente at 12:00 PM on August 31, 2008
Fable 2 is days, if not hours from going gold, Lionhead Studio's Sam Van Tilburgh told me today.
"We have one or two bugs that are keeping us from going gold," Van Tilburgh said.
Even though the game, due out Oct. 21, is on the verge of wrapping up, the dev team is still keeping late night hours, he said.
"Everyone is playing the game, staying 12 hours," he said.
Van Tilburgh was excited to finally give gamers a chance to check out the game for themselves at the Penny Arcade Expo and so is designer Peter Molyneux.
"I've been talking to him about the reaction," he said. "He asks what the reaction to the game has been. What do they think about the combat."
Van Tilburgh said that 97 percent of the reaction has been very positive over the first two days of the show.
"Initially I thought it was a bad thing, but one person told me the game was 'tight'," Van Tilburgh said. "I'm told that's a good thing."

@FadedEchos: I agree. There won't be a problem wih that here since no one but me and another guy liked the first one here, but everyone around here are Star Wars nuts and absolutely must own any and all Star Wars related crap, so I pre-ordered Force.
Also, that picture at the top is awesome.

@excaliburps: Nah you dont need to. Its just basically a re-invention I think, cause the story is very similar, a rag to riches kinda story of Fable 1.

@excaliburps: I really didnt play much of Fable I but i have already preordered Fable II so i certainly hope it is a spiritual successor sort of thing. It does take place like 500 years in the future so im sure we'll be fine.

Who doesn't know what "tight" means these days! especially since it's starting to become one of those terms that belongs to a certain set of years and won't be used anymore in the near future... like radical.

@excaliburps: I don't think you will do since it is set something like 500 years after the first game. But I'm sure there are meant to be a few characters and references to the first game you might not notice without having played it.

Does anyone know if you need to have played the first Fable to understand Fable 2? Or is it more in the spiritual successor sort of thing? I admit I haven't played the first one but Fable 2 looks really good from all the previews and trailers I've seen.

@enewtabie(wants a job at Insomniac Games in NC): Don't worry, I'm pretty sure you won't be lost at all. From what I've heard or can tell, ties to the original game (storywise, at least) will be minimal. You create a brand new character again anyway.

Seriously, you've got to hand it to Lionhead for pushing this thing so hard. Depending on how this goes, they're probably going to either spend the rest of the time until the launch polishing up the game even more, or bumping the date up.
And that art is so badass, it just might make me bump a game from my list to get this.

Ok I don't claim to be an expert on game manufacturing processes but if I'm not mistaken halo 3 was being produced for 3 weeks before the release date, and was much more anticipated than fable 2. If fable 2 really is days from going gold then why would they delay it to manufacture copies over the course of two months?

I'm pysched, one day I was Amazon and I saw that they had dropped the price of the Limited Edition to about $67! I had already pre-ordered it there and canceled it because I thought $80 was a bit too high, I already wasted that much for a bogus Limited Edition of Soul Calibur IV (which was pretty much junk), and the next day I went back and it was $67 so I swooped it up! I think it was the same day as the Gold Box for PS3 on Amazon.

Honestly, I don't care if it lives up to the hype Molyneux created for it, and I don't really expect it to, at least not entirely. I DO expect it to be an amazing game, however. I loved the first one, since it was detailed, fun, and filled with style. If the sequel takes all that and makes it bigger, Fable 2 could easily be one of my favorite games of this year.

@gamecrazychris: Whoa no some one needs to step off their high horse bucko. I doubt your lack of purchasing the game that they put so much man hours into will break their heart. There are many fable fans who loved the first game who will purchase this one as well. Fable 1 sold over a million copy and this shall repeat that as well. I doubt you not getting this game will make them shed a tear in any way.

@kagebutsu:
It depends on the Dev Studio and how comfortable they are with iteration and making changes late.
Games like Fable, Kotor, etc, you don't want to mess with right up to the end.
It also depends on where the discs are stamped / created.
This determines how long it will take to get on store shelves.

500 years? That's certainly a long time...I hope there's no hidden gems that you wouldn't get unless you played the first one. Though I really think they must've snuck some there.
@Prathik: Was that a little bit of the "theme" in 1? I hope there's a overview of it all before its release. I hate reading through Wiki for it. =D
@Refused: So that means there's no items/characters that's going to be carried over right? I assume it's that way seeing as the first one was for the Xbox1.
Thanks for the answers guys! I hope this lives up to the hype. From what I understand the first one had a lot of promises that they didn't exactly deliver...
To be honest I'm intrigued by the dog mechanics Molyneux brought in. I think that's one thing they can do to make sure we get involved emotionally. Even for just a little bit to the character we have.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I thought the first Fable was boring as all hell but it was one of those games where there was potential and I always thought Fable 2 would probably be awesome. Despite talk of "simplified combat" (simpler than mashing the X button constantly?!) I still have hopes for this one.

Molyneux's games are always so amazing and so tragic simultaneously. They're full of incredible new ideas, but they always miss the keystone piece that turn them into a full game rather than a collection of ideas.
Black & White was probably the most tragic of the bunch, as it was simply a huge leap forward in so many ways, but missed one of the simplest components that was the keystone to the experience: opponent AI. It was /completely/ braindead which didn't force the player to use all those fancy ideas to adapt to the situation.
Still worth playing for all the spiffy ideas, though - unfortunately they're not doing a PC simultaneous release with this one, so I guess I'll just be hearing about it from y'all.

I don't care what anyone says, I thought the original Fable was brilliant. Messing with the guards, destroying villages, buying new stats, personalising, the arena and all the mini quests.. Although, I'm not one of those people who followed it during production, I just picked it off a shelf, so I didn't get hyped up.
This game looks even better.

You know, I loved the first one. Really, genuinely loved it. I loved tattooing, I loved hairstyles, I loved getting married and coming home to the hubby to find him waiting in the house.
I loved the arena. Yeah, odd thing to enjoy, I guess, but I thought the arena was really good.
I loved the 'sleepy hollow' feeling of the bit with the white werewolf.
Really, I had a great time with this game. I have a little hole in my chest where Fable 2 was meant to go, but alas, now that the 360 is gone, I shan't be playing it.
I'll survive, another casualty of exclusivity wars. It's moments like this that make me wish that Dyack was right about the one console future - but given that he's wrong about just about everything else, and me not particularly wanting to see an industry controlled by one platform... I think I'd rather live with the wounds inflicted by Fable 2's absence than spend the rest of my life trying to escape the orbit of Dyack's head's gravitational pull should he turn out to be right, against all odds.
