A Most Bold Approach to Oregon Trail
Posted by Owen Good at 11:00 AM on August 24, 2008
I usually try to wrap up Saturdays with some laughs so, here's this and two other funny pics I found through the week. On their own, maybe not worth a post but together, hey, it's the weekend, so here's a funnies page for you to spread on the living room floor.
Remember, if you're a Madden gamer and want in on the KFC (Kotaku Football Conference), that announcement will be at 1 pm MDT (3 pm Eastern, noon Pacific)
This one apparently came off of Facebook. I friended the guy who created/posted it, I'll let you know if anything comes of that. Also, someone run out and register www.muahahahahahahahahaha.com.

And proof again there is nothing new under the sun.

@man in gauze is king ramses II, actually: The picture is of Zelda from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, she is saying Send help.
The mouse is over the option to Send Link, Link been the default name of the main hero in pretty much all the Legend of Zelda games out.

@man in gauze is king ramses II, actually: It's funnilarious because it says "Send link", you know, like an Internet link, but then it's Zelda, so you don't just send a link, you send Link-link, geddit? ...
...
... Oookay, so, that Peach gal, what a cocktease, huh?

@man in gauze is king ramses II, actually: Zelda is the princess from the Zelda games. Link, the hero is always saving her. She says send help, and he hit file and went down to highlight "Send Link...". I guess you would have to play the games or know alot about them to get it.

Oh, you mean Kotaku's Madden Conference! I'll probably have to pass on that, unfortunately. I've never really liked Madden in the past, & even though I liked this year's version more than others, I just don't see myself getting it.

Personally, I'd love to join the KFC... but I did the stupidest thing last night. My PS3 was making a lot of noise while I was playing Madden, so I decided to flip it vertically to give it some more room to breath. Whaddayaknow-though, it scratched the game to hell, it did. What a fool - even a four year old knows not to do that.

@Đipic: 4chan is the well from which all memes are drawn, good and bad. It's got a lot of potential for mass retardation, but you've got the monkeys-typewriters scenario going on as well.

Owen-
My feeling is that you should continue to post things like this in the future despite them being from 4chan or being old because there are new people to the blog and internet everyday. And they are still funny.
4chan has such a reputation some people stay shy of it despite it being the source of all humor on the interwebz. Remember though... if you decide to visit, don't ever go to /b/.

@onidavin: I've never found anything that has come from there any more than mildly amusing. I'll never understand the meme/lulz mentality. Someone tells you a mildly funny joke or you read a comic in the newspaper and have a chuckle. Then you hear the same joke or read the same comic the next day and maybe you smile. After that it's dead. How people can laugh at the same tired, regurgitated memes (sometimes when they were barely funny in the first place) is far beyond me. I only have to assume the people in question are far too easily amused and/or are not right in the head.

Ok, that's the best Oregon Trail fanart picture ever. Not that I think I've seen any, but if there is any, well this one has to be the tops. Unless there's one making fun of families drowning while crossing a river. I'm sure that's a comic somewhere. Has to be.

@Đipic: I'm not a 4chan-frequenter, but I love seeing the evolution of a meme after the fact (distilled through sites that shield me from the less palatable aspects of /b/). There's some bizarre, clever shit that goes on. Like the "Gentlemen" TF2 sequence described above.

@Đipic:
The thing about memes that I enjoy is seeing a familiar thing used in different and unexpected ways. The only thing on 4Chan that ever struck me as funny was the "Gentlemen" thread on /b/; the first picture was a TF2 spy with his mouth stuffed full of cigarettes and the simple caption "Gentlemen." There were soon things like Jesus with his mouth stuffed with crosses saying "Amen" and such, which were funny in that they had a new take on something old. On an unrelated note, I love trying to extract some sort of deep meaning out of 4Chan memes, such as saying that the Gentlemen spy is a satire on how people view smoking; smoke one cigarette in public and people look at you like you've got a thousand of the things stuffed in your mouth; anything about a character is immediately overshadowed by a cigarette in his mouth. It's obviously bullshit, but fun to come up with.
@AngelMayLaugh:
May laugh, indeed. Then again, my take on that would be DevilMightTotallyScrewThePlayerCharacterOverTherebyMakingRoomForTheSequel, but I'm a Diablo fanboy like that. :P

I imagine the first comic is going to go over like a lead balloon with all the younger gamers who didn't spend way too much time playing Oregon Trail in their middle school libraries because "it's ok, it's educational!"
Nonetheless, his strategy is exceedingly bold indeed. Let's hope it pays off for him.

@man in gauze is king ramses II, silly.: Agreed. As incredibly stupid as many memes are, some are just so bizarre that I can't help but love them and follow them as they evolve.

[De]Motivators are just a goldmine if done properly. They don't really get old. But there's a lot of YouTube Poop ones that I like. One of my AIM away messages is "I wonder what's for dinner *vague hand motion towards dinner*"
And of course, when given oral instructions in school to create a graph according to a certain algorithm, the teacher said "Shade in (whatever) red if you got a value over nine thousand" and I said WHAT, NINE THOUSAND? :P Stuff like that is always fun.

@onidavin: I read somewhere that they ran an actual experiment with monkeys and typewriters. So yeah, it's a lot like 4chan, but not quite in the way you meant.
