Age Of Conan Invades GC
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on August 16, 2008
Don your loincloth, polish your bastard sword, and get ready to invade Germany as Funcom announces their plans for Age of Conan at next week's Games Convention in Leipzig. They'll be showing off new locations, new content, and new features of their massively-multiplayer swords & sorcery title during live stage shows at the convention, with Blue Orb on hand to show players how to work the game with a gamepad and the TripleHead2Go guys granting hands-on time with the game on a three-screen setup. There's also loot to be had in the form of free game trials, limited edition game DVDs, and inflatable swords - because giving out real swords would have been pricey, and things would have gotten ugly rather quickly.
They'll also be showing off features of the DirectX version of the game behind closed doors to members of the press. Hopefully I'll get a chance to slip inside one of the sessions while I'm in Germany next week to see what's what. Hit the jump for full details on Conan's German invasion.
DirectX10 Features in Age of Conan Exclusively Revealed at Games Convention
- New Locations, Content and Features to Be Revealed for Both Press and Consumers at the Show -
- Thousands of Exclusive Give-Aways, Including Free Trial Accounts and Limited Edition Game DVDs -
DURHAM, N.C.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Conan is invading this year's Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. Funcom and Eidos invite everyone to come join the festivities at his majesty's outpost located at stand B10 in Hall 5. Behind the tall walls of the King's fortress press and gamers alike can play the game, meet and chat with the developers, collect amazing give-aways and observe live stage shows where Funcom will reveal and demonstrate brand new and never-before-seen locations, content and features that will be put into the recently launched massively multiplayer online game 'Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures' in the months ahead.
"We are very pleased with the tremendously successful launch that we had," says Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Funcom, Morten Larssen. "But this is where the real journey starts for 'Age of Conan'. In the months ahead we will be putting a lot of effort into expanding and improving on the game, and we look forward to using the Games Convention to unveil some of the locations, content and features we have in the pipeline."
During the live stage shows Funcom will present new locations, content and features coming to 'Age of Conan'. Blue Orb Inc. will also be present to demonstrate how you can use their software to play 'Age of Conan' with a gamepad, while the guys behind 'TripleHead2Go' have prepared a machine with a three screen setup so that gamers can come and play 'Age of Conan' in all its unprecedented visual glory using cutting-edge technology. Funcom will also be giving away exciting loot such as the legendary inflatable swords and free trial accounts together with limited edition DVDs containing the entire game. This is the first time Funcom hands out free trials and the supply is limited, so we encourage you to make your way to Conan's outpost as soon as possible!
Behind closed doors members of the press will also be treated to a presentation of exclusive DirectX10 features, technology that will add even more power to the spectacular graphics featured in the game. Press interested in attending these presentations should contact Funcom, but please note that seating is very limited at this point.
'Age of Conan' launched in May this year and immediately topped sales charts around the world. It has received more than thirty magazine covers and more than fifteen major awards, including numerous "Best MMO of E3" awards and the "Best Online Game of Show" award at GC 2007. The game has received numerous glowing reviews, including a 9.4 score from US website GameZone. 'Age of Conan' is a key title in Microsoft's Games for Windows line-up, as well as a showcase title for nVidia thanks to its jaw-dropping graphics.

@flhrci:
That could be said about many many things. But according to their PR department they were small things and the consumers are to blame for listening to the hype.

@Wahrheit: Exactly, this is why Funcom kept their mouth shut till the release day for the general public to figure out that your paying for Guild Wars with persistent loot.

I gave up officially last night. I paid for a month of never playing, and was about to get billed again. I tried to like it, just got bored though.

"They'll also be showing off features of the DirectX version of the game..."
Wait what? Is there a Mac version of this game? o_O
@PsycheE:
This is the strength of WoW having an engine that even old computers can handle. MMOROG without massive just isn't a good idea.

Probably already too late for AoC unfortunately. Not that it'll die before the end of the year, but alot of people left due to lack of content. Now there's a lot of competition. WAR comes out next month. WoW has WotLK coming up and anybody who's still up for grabs in the MMO market will be playing that.

The retention rate is shot. This game cannot be saved unless they recoded the whole game to get rid of lobbies and drastically change the gameplay to fit those needs.
But then, 90% of the people can't handle a non-lobbied zones as their rig probably can't render 40 people at once.

It already has theres hardly 1k people on a server at peak times. Than its gotten so bad that theyve disabled /who and given no reason. And if you look at xfire numbers its down 90 percent

What conditions must be met to make a sword a bastard?
The anvil and the hammer that forged it were out of wed-lock?
How did the sword live with the shame? It must of been frowned upon back in those days...

Once the novelty of bare chested women wears off, I believe the population of this game will probably take a nose dive.
The game and company is as clunky and impaired as the FunCom that introduced Anarchy Online was.

Wasn't there supposed to be an Xbox 360 version of this? I would love to play another MMO, but I sit in front of a computer 10 hours a day at work, so coming home and playing a game on my PC is not ideal.

It's a shame that they released so early, it's a game that really showed signs of promise from what I played. I hope it can pick up players again once it's become more polished, but with Warhammer as a new entry it'll have even stiffer competition.
Also I'm in the WOTLK beta and having heaps of fun, so WoW can't be written off either.

@Mr.Monkey: Actually a bastard sword (i think) is a sword that needs to be used with both one or two hands depending on the strike preformed. This is different from using a one-handed sword or a two-handed sword where the combatant does not change how many hands he uses. I read this in some book though, so i could be way off. and i'm not sure about the name.
On a side note wow this is quite off-topic

I think AoC was rather silly.
First off it tried to go 'high graphics' setting a high minimum spec bar.
Example of how successful this is in most MMOs? Hello Vanguard!
Not to mention that magic casting was pretty much standard fare while the much touted melee is little more than Dance Dance Revolution without the upbeat music. The fact they tacked the melee system onto the bows didn't make a whole lot of sense to me and didn't feel very good.
The direction and shield system is interesting but mainly falls on it's face as everyone just spams the specials (yes I know they're directional) and just put their shields on one per direction without changing it much.
Don't get me wrong, I'm well aware of the surprising depth of the shield and direction system (it's 3D!) but most don't.
There's one or two good ideas nestled in there but on the whole the game didn't really entertain me, especially the single player game... uh... I mean Tortage. I know people loved it but as a social gamer, I found it pretty lacking.
Truth be told, I'm likely being over the top and perhaps even harsh in my criticism but meh. I guess I feel there's something in there that makes me like it enough to make comment but not enough to actually play it or enjoy playing it =P

Hmm, about that "thirty magazine covers" thing.
I noticed that Beckett Massive Online Gamer just did a second consecutive cover on AoC and the lead article is a thinly-veiled advertorial on "Why you should play this game."
I think Funcom's strategy is to keep suckering new players and float on the box sales until they can get this thing onto the 360 or some kind of stable condition on the PC where it will quickly slide into second- or third-tier MMO status with a meager playerbase.
It riles me that they charged for early access to a pre-Beta game, still haven't added features that are advertised on the box, yet continue to peddle this POS to the unsuspecting.

I just wish someone would make an MMORPG that's actually fun to play. Not something where I click, manage some crap, then watch my guy auto-attack.
Conan had promise, and fell flat.
No one seems to want to innovate at all.. and why should they! The biggest MMORPG of them all at the moment wasn't an innovation at all, and it's making megabucks. Blizzard has effectively cockblocked any and all MMO innovation. Just like they do with every genre they "control".
When the bar is set so low as to what you got to do, to make lots of money, no one is going to try hard. Because all they want is money.

Fact of the day: After announcing that Age of Conan has got an active player base of 410,000 people, FunCom's stock dropped by 20.49%.
My biggest issue with Age of Conan is rather simple - it didn't manage to get me emerged in the world, and no DirectX 10 client or end-game content will be able to fix that.

Come to think of it, if Blizz managed to make a more mature-only server and showed off topless avatars, AoC would probably lose the rest of its playerbase.
To be honest, I really wasn't impressed with the brief scant I had with AoC. If I'm playing a fantasy game, and everyone is a clone of each other, its kinda boring.

A good question for them would be, Why are the exact same (seven year old) cheats and hacks for Anarchy Online currently available in Age of Conan?
Another one, Why have you let the gem duplicating in game for well over one month and not banned players who have duplicated multiple sets of armor for many, many characters?
Why have the guilds who have used these and other exploits to build their cities (duping construction materials - the same way as gem duping is done) still in game?
Same could be asked of another exploit to complete Harvesting quests with less than the required number of rare materials.
