Blizzard Starts Pushing Ringtones And Wallpapers
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:00 PM on August 28, 2008
Do you really need to have the gurgling murloc sound as your telephone ringtone? Do you not hear the World of Warcraft opening theme enough on your PC? Perhaps you can't figure out how to create your own mobile phone wallpapers and would rather spend a couple bucks on letting the extremely nosy know that you're into Diablo or StarCraft? Well you're in luck, as Blizzard has just opened up a ringtone and wallpaper store at Mobile.Blizzard.Com. In partnership with Echovox, Inc., the store carries a wide selection of wallpapers from Blizzard's three biggest money makers, along with choice sounds from World of Warcraft that could very well lead to an awkward conversation with a total stranger that reinforces the fact that with 20 million servers and two factions, chance of you knowing them are slim to none.
Currently the service mainly services Europe, South America, and a few bits of Asia, so those of us in the U.S. will have to make due with obsessively humming the theme song to WoW until allowances are made.

I don't know why you don't know symbian OS, they're one of the largest smart phone OS there is.

@sarcasmOD has no respect for Nintendo: I'm not saying they'll let you...I'm saying it's readily available without too much effort. No marketing here...just from experience. I just don't see why so many stupid people would pay a carrier to download ringtones and wallpaper.

@kumuasata: I think the marketing team uses better English

@karateka: You're telling me that pretty much anyone who has some OS I've never heard of is excited for the chance to let me download nokia specific cell phone games? Why the hell would these people let me do that, are symbian uses particularly generous?
Wait...what the hell does this even have to do with anything?

You know what's so cool about a nokia phone...almost any one with symbian OS will allow you to download games and ringtones, it even allows you to use your own mp3 as ring tone...and so much more. Than I get these other phones...and they're locked down like a mofo. You can't do anything on the phone without paying. Go with a nokia phone. They got so many software for it...cool and lots are free. Gotta be symbian OS though.

Kind of sad. Blizzard would release this stuff for free on the PC, but because it's on the phone, it costs money, and is likely overpriced.

I blame this on activision. It has to be their fault that blizzard is doing this kind of lame marketing.

Wow, 3 dollars for a ringtone. That seems outrageous to me. However, if you have outrageous disposable income, I guess it's not a problem.

@maraxusofk: Why are people so against things like this that they call it "whoring out"? It's retardation, nobody is forcing you to buy it.

I was just thinking. Foreign cell phone companies are more lenient. American companies are self-serving money grubbers who could care less about the people using the phone.

I think the most ridiculous thing is, America doesnt' even get it yet. How lame is that. An American company, that migratedto foreign companies and they are servicing them and not us.
I feel betrayed. Honestly. I'm a huge Blizzard fan, and for europe to get something before us, just isn't fair.

@Blinklink11: TBC's theme song is unoriginally entitled "The Burning Legion". It's track 1 on the Limited Edition CD.

True fact. On my old computer, I set the goodbye jingle to the Murloc scream, so every time I turned it off, a Murloc would yell at me...

Looks like it is just '3 of your national currency'. So £3 for me. However it is an excellent deal if you live in Zimbabwe.
I still nearly bought the Murloc gurgle. My phone came with no decent ringtones at all.
But I'm never giving up my Death of the Endless phone wallpaper. Peachy keen!

Blizzard has a unique opportunity here in the MMO space to really push the limits with Social Media & Interaction. I don't see this contributing much, but one day I long to SMS messages to Trade Chat from my Cell Phone.

@avconsumer2: Exactly. You've already paid for personal use of the sound and graphics by buying the game. I can guarantee there's more sound files in the MPQ than there will ever be on that site.
